Ruike responded and let me know that the sheath is just ABS. I find that surprising because I would never have thought that ABS could be turned into a sheath as robust as this one.

    GRN wouldn't be a great option here since 14C28N is a tough but soft stainless, the glass fibers would have dulled the knife in the sheath. Kydex would have driven cost up for little to no added benefit. I think it's a great choice for this knife and glad that it's robust in ABS.

    I watched 1/2 dozen videos before finding your review, which is better than the rest. You show the belt attachment positions and I agree 100% with batoning. The obsession with bushcrafting is ridiculous. Anyone who is going to spend serious time in the woods needs the proper tools: knife, axe, hatchet, etc. It is useful to know, that in a survival situation, that a knife can be used to split wood, but when is that really necessary ? To start a fire, spliting wood is not the problem. I would love to watch a video "WHY BATONING WOOD IS IDIOTIC". There is absolutely no reason on earth to sarcrifice the cutting edge when it is much, much easier to find dry twigs, grass, or snap some small branches over your knee to make kindling. Anyone obsessed with batoning either: (1) has never owned a hatchet; or (2) never actually started a fire. Thanks for the great review. I ordered the knife today !

    Thanks rhino ranch. We are clearly on the same page regarding batoning. I thought about making a video like that but since CCE focuses mostly on pocket knives I didn't feel like I was the right guy for the job but maybe I'll do it. I do try to mention it something about the subject whenever I review a fixed blade that someone would be tempted to baton with though.

    Thanks for the review. I have this knife and a F815. I think both of them are very good. As for the sheath, you can take off the belt clip and add a piece of nylon strap or leather if you like to make a belt loop and use the holes in the sheath. It should work.

    I find the leather sheaths on little handle heavy knives lets them turn over and fall out unless you snap it . In leather I like the pouch sheath In plastic they seem like they're trying to get the knife handle up around your neck they're so high with the loop .and they stick way out away from your side !

    Generally speaking, you can test if a thermoplastic has glass fibre fill by cutting it with a razor. Crackling and snapping generally means some sort of fill. Glass ball will give an even resistance, somewhat sandy. No fill should be smooth with no sound or feedback. I think most people keep glass-filled thermoplastics away from edged tools as, a poorly designed sheath, easily dulls any steel. The knife's purpose being my former wheelhouse, I like the design a lot. Very Busse in look.

  • @CanadianCuttingEdge

    Hey Jake, nice review. I picked up a Ruike Hornet today, and it definitely has matched the quality expectations I have for Ruike, based on my P801 that I also own from them. They do a good job of designing knives that are comfortable, not just when you're holding them in the store, but for actual use. It seems, based on your review, that this knife should probably be a Mora Garberg killer. Those retail for around $30 more, and you get the same steel, but with thicker stock than on the Mora. That said, I'm not a fan of the Ruike sheaths. I wish they made some that were a bit more compact, like the one that comes with the Garberg. Thanks for your thoughts and review!

  • @CanadianCuttingEdge

    @CanadianCuttingEdge

    5 жыл бұрын

    Thanks James. I dislike the belt loop system that Ruike uses too, it works for some people but mostly I would prefer my knives to hang lower so that the handle is the height of my belt, not higher. I think I would rather carry the Hornet over the Garberg myself but I would be happy for a Garberg in an emergency to be sure.

    I’m not sure if this would get read but I would like to add my bit for batoning. We have a wood stove for heating and I have to constantly process kindling sticks out of pine (we have pine everywhere for this). The safest way and most accurate way to get nice sticks is to baton. For this I use a condor bushman parang and it is perfect for this type of work and is far superior to using an axe.

  • @CanadianCuttingEdge

    The Condor Bushman Parang can certainly be used for that task, it's a pretty good choice. (I read ALL the legitmate comments that are left on any video no matter how old - I just ignore the few junk comments that some people like to leave.)

    My question, Jake, also relates to Ruike's skeletal Hornet fixed blade model (even more so, probably, but I'll ask here): How do you think this 14C28N steel alloy would hold up to being used, now & then when required, in a coastal environment around small boat activities (sea kayaking & canoeing to one-man small craft sailing)... given regular use of a first class protectant oil up front and diligent end of 'working' day clean up? My guess is that a cheaper, different sort of fixed blade knife using 4116 (Cold Steel?) or N690 (very rare in such blades?) would be one "rating point" better for resisting permanent rust damage, though. Apart from maybe 2 price-y fixed blade models by Spyderco in the LC200N alloy almost exclusively being used by them at this time (and not 'til sometime later this year for the Waterman), an obvious choice for such a really tough all-'rounder 4"-5" blade doesn't jump out to me in knife reviews I've seen (the issue, as I've stated it, being rarely addressed!).

  • @CanadianCuttingEdge

    @CanadianCuttingEdge

    6 жыл бұрын

    That is a GREAT question, Frederick. But, I am not the best guy to ask that. You see, I live in landlocked Alberta, and not only don't we have an ocean nearby we also have a very dry environment. People in the rest of Canada come here to find old cars to restore because they rust less here than anywhere else in the country. So, my life experience with 14C28N has been in this context where rust is not common. That being said, 14C28N is quite resistant to corrosion - from the specs that I have read, and I think it is likely that it will hold up fairly well in a coastal environment if the owner was diligent with care as you suggest. The steel mfr claims that it has fairly high corrosion resistance: www.materials.sandvik/en/products/strip-steel/strip-products/knife-steel/sandvik-knife-steels/sandvik-14c28n/

  • @CanadianCuttingEdge

    @CanadianCuttingEdge

    6 жыл бұрын

    That makes sense, what you say about the sheath. Which one is better between those two? Well, I just pulled out both, so I could compare directly... They are so similar in some ways. If you took the Ruike and ground the spine down to where the bevel ends then you would have a blade that is the same thickness in both, same depth, and therefore the same bevel angle. The Ruike is just a bit smaller and it has a longer slower curved belly. The Real Steel can accommodate larger hands. The other main differences is the sheaths - which are very dissimilar. Pick the one that you like the sheath of best. Which is better? I dunno what to say, I think it would depend on what I was thinking of doing. Wilderness living = Real Steel. General survival = Ruike. But they are SUPER close.

I like to hear opinions like yours in the comments. In my reviews, I have chosen to just evaluate each knife on its own merits because someone will always say something like: "But you forgot to mention this or that knife..." This seems like a nice knife. I have several similar knives 8" or so and I'm looking for one a bit longer like 10" or so. Was that an SCHF42 in the leather sheath you were showing? I believe that is a 10" knife. Do you still like and use the 42?

    Sharp eye. Yes it is the SCHF42. I like that knife quite a lot, I carried it quite a bit last summer when I was out and about in the mountains. It was my main knife for a 2 week camping trip.

    This is as close as you can get to full flat grind without quite being there. I prefer this because there is just enough flat sided steel that it can be clamped securely to most guided sharpeners. BUT there is no one way that is best for everyone - no one way to make a knife that is more correct than others (though there are some ways that are less correct).

    There certainly are knives that can do those things. Generally, it isn't going to be a budget knife that is a good choice for those scenarios. This knife can handle batoning too. There are many times when a guy is doing what I call car camping - when they have a vehicle fairly near where they are and in those cases it is wise, and easy to take along a tool that is more suited for the task. When a person it out and about, away from it ALL then, of course, you want one tool that can do it all. It is in those cases where I recommend wise batoning - where the blade is used minimally because it is wise to preserve the knife as much as possible. For example, even if the knife can baton a 5-inch log in half, it is wise to take off 1.5" pieces off the side to mitigate the risk. The best knives do fail, sometimes. And you don't want it to fail if it is the only knife you have with you. That is what I promote.

    Canadian Cutting Edge I have a great budget bowie with a kydex sheath .the m-tech 151 .some say copy of the cold steel trail master .but it is a stainless steel version $25 .00 . The sheath was $60.00 but its a very good sheath . I like the stainless ove the carbon steel . The grand kids have a ball learning to boton and what not . You dont have to worry if the go into the dirt or even it they break it ! Get to just in case ! I pound tent pegs with the side of the blade . I saw a youtube vid where they botoned another m-tech though a 7ft ( sorry i dont know the metric =) none the worse for ware ! They arent hard stainless .but they are extremely good beaters .and low cost trainers for the kids !!!

    Canadian Cutting Edge Oh yeah going around the round .that gives the wood a place to go ( bending away ) .I was just saying that m-tech knife was really something but very low price .but if you're going to pound a knife you might want one a little softer heat treat . It won't keep and edge as long in use but won't chip out . Good vids I try to see them all !

    The lashing point on the guard can be ignored. I don't ever plan on using that lashing point myself, but since it doesn't get in the way, it isn't an obstruction in any way. So I think I will happily use this knife quite a bit this summer.

    This "don't use knives for batoning" schtick is not so simple - when the only tool you have is the knife and you need to split timber, then the knife is the only tool you have - there are ways to use the knife to assist wood splitting that minimize risk to the blade (and the operator, although few people seem to consider that), and proper use of a blade along with maintenance of that blade will come through learning, and again, most people think they don't need to learn and just do (and do badly, usually - just try a bow drill fire when you are desperate - it NEVER works and that is all to do with the mind, not the situation - control the mind and you control the situation - practice makes perfect [no, perfection is not attainable, but close is good enough] - prepare to be unprepared - know your limits, and do not exceed them - yada yada yada...). Enough of that - this knife is ideal for me, and that means it is ideal for me, not anyone else, but it may be - find out for yourself....
