Which Is Best? Morakniv Garberg VS Condor Terrasaur - KnifeCenter Reviews

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The full tang Mora Garberg is a great knife for Bushcraft and Camping, but the Condor Terrasaur is a new challenger you may want to consider. Get your hands on either here: kcoti.com/33a2MY3
The Garberg is an excellent blade, but at half the price, is the Terrasaur a worthy competitor? To find out, KnifeCenter’s David C. Andersen takes them both into the Virginia backwoods to see how well these scandi ground knives carve, baton, whittle, make feathersticks and more to see which one is the best bushcraft knife on a budget.

I just received my first Mora Garberg... This knife is EPIC !!! Build quality is superior. The one thing I really like about this knife that no other knife has is that it has a short drop at the point allowing this knife to be extra strong. Other knife makers tend to make a false blade on top in taper it an inch back. This knife does not. The taper is less than 5 mm, which gives the knife a whole lot of strength up front. For 70 bucks this is the best knife there is...

For me one drawback with Condor Terrasaur it only has carbon steel. Is also more than $40 here in the UK, more like $60/70 which is closer to the Garberg.

Nothing I like better than a "beater Knife," and Condors are beater knives right out of the box. Their 1070 is tough in big knives, but sucked in a bushcraft knives (dulled quick). The 1095 Terrasaur holds an edge well, but you won't be too upset if lost or broken.

I had a Condor and returned it. It was the first full tang knife I purchased, but there were several things about it I didn't like. One, not very sharp out of the box. Two, not great for striking a spark with a fero rod. Three, fit and finish was blah. Going to try the stainless Mora Garberg. Fit and finish looks much nicer, and I don't have to worry about oiling the knife every time I'm done using it to keep it from corroding.

@user-lc1rw4xh5z I understand what your saying, I buy knives and customize then to me as soon as I open the box. With that said, many people want what they need out the box, yes many of us also can see what we want with a bit of work, but that doesn't mean the beginner can do so. He said it was his first full tang knife , we have to be easy on him.

I had both sold the Terrasaur and my Garberg is my main to go for rainy days. I find the Mora Garberg/ Eldris/Kansbol handles to be hands down the most comfortable knife handles on the planet. I got hand fatigue with the Terrasaur and it slipped in my hand in the rain easier than the Garberg. I preferred the blade shape of the Terrasaur but overall the Garberg for me beat it every other way ... but for me Esee is still king.

I enjoy minor modding so for me applying a burr on the spine for firestarting & refining the edge to improve the Condor's slicing power was no big deal. I chose it based on its wt., balance & value. For me it was a good choice. No complaints, it's a guilt free work horse.

Buy the Mora Garberg. I have both the stainless (first purchase) and the carbon Garberg. The steel is a better grade on the Mora's. After some use on my stainless Mora I decided to remove the secondary bevel edge and sharpened to a full scandi. It took a while using a series of japanese wet stones......now sharp as a razor. I like the full scandi so well I did the same to my Carbon Garberg only that carbon blade was sharpened alot faster.

Good demonstration of these 2 knives on some common knife tasks. Given what you showed and described it appeared they were basically equal in performance. I understand the Condor might need to be sharpened out of the box, which is not an issue for me as I “sharpen” most of my “budget” production knives anyway. Also a couple minutes with a file would sort out any issues with the spine that you alluded to. So, it is basically price & weight or fit & finish in your demonstration. Price & weight win every time. I would go with the Condor. Having said that, I saw nothing in the demonstration that makes me want to give up my Mora Classic 2.

Got one of the Terrasaurs. Ergonomics on the Terrasaur are great and MUCH better if you slip a bit of street bike inner tube over the handle (tip: get the piece of inner tube wet with some rubbing alcohol first, will slip on easier but you still may get blisters on your thumbs), adds a little cushiness and is *very* grippy. Sheath is a work in progress and that *is* a Mora ripoff. Retention is with a couple of nubs on the inside of the sheath that fit in the dimple in the middle of the handle. Apparently they at first had complaints that it was too difficult to get the knife out. It remains very awkward to get the knife out of the provided sheath but retention is now not very good at all, nubs don't grip it well enough now. Ditched the sheath, looks great in a leather sheath that came with my Kizlyar Yeti but am using a sheath i made myself for it (with the ranger band handle treatment, it rode much higher in the Condor sheath with a good friction fit and made the thumb ramp actually functional which was cool but left a couple of extra inches in length to the sheath and i didn't want to cut it). Didn't come very sharp, just barely 'utility' sharp. My copy appears to have an ever so slight hollow grind and wasn't a really beautiful, perfectly even grind so went with a secondary microbevel rather than put all that work into hand grinding a true scandi. Some iterations of this knife appear to have a slight recurve but the edge on my copy came pretty straight. Having difficulty getting it anywhere near as sharp as my Ka-Bar and i've gotten pretty good at putting fine edges on blades. The grind on the Terrasaur may not be beautiful but shouldn't adversely impact performance. There's something else that might. There's a problem nobody's talking about - the heat treat, it may not have one. What notes i could find on it, Condor says Rockwell between 50 and 55; that's quite a spread and pretty low for 1095 (ESEE says 56-58 and Ka-Bar says 57-59 for theirs, can't find anything on the Mora Garberg beyond a note about 'high hardness'). Have suspicions that even that '50-55' may be just a ballpark. Accidentally dropped the knife about 1.5 feet (~0.45 m), came down tip first on concrete. Didn't break. Didn't bend. It did mushroom. Seen that in lead bullets but can't say i've ever seen that in a knife before. i went with the Terrasaur over the Garberg because i actually like the design better for my own purposes (i really like the design) and the advertised weight of the knife is about 3 oz. lighter than the Garberg. Weight is an issue for me, really don't want to be carrying a ton of stuff. If Condor did a decent heat treatment on this, brought the Rockwell up to about 57-58 (and heat treating 1095 is no real complex job), any other issues with it i could take care of myself easy enough, wouldn't mind putting the work into, and at this price point it would be 6 stars on a 5 point scale in my book. As is and in my opinion, the Terrasaur is a decent beater utility knife but you can find those at a gas station for less and with better fit and finish and decent sheath at that. But if you've got a soft spot in your heart for mongrel puppy dogs, the Terrasaur might appeal to you. PS - got mine from Knife Center, great to do business with 'em, even in times of plague. (6 stars on a 5 point scale ;-)

I don't own either one of these knives nor have I used them. I can say this however I own 20 Mora's and only 2 Condor knives. I would continue to buy Mora's. I have been extremely happy with them. However I think 2 Condors will be all I own. I'm not saying that Condors are bad knives, but they are not a bang for your buck knife like Mora's are. Thanks for the video I enjoyed it.

  • @NGMonocrom

You did an excellent job comparing these two models. And, it's clear that they are very closely comparable. So much so that despite the slightly better fit and finish on the Mora, at *half the price* the Condor just seems like the better of the two when they're neck-and-neck on performance. And this is coming from not just a Mora fan, but as someone who is not impressed by Condor Tool & Knife in general. (Speaking from experience with their products.) However, can't argue with basically the same level of performance at half the price. So.... Literally just placed an order for a black handle Condor Terrasaur a few minutes ago, on your website. Honestly, the biggest reason someone should pay more for the Mora is if they are determined to have this type, and size of knife in the stainless steel option.

Great review. Price is always a consideration and I’ve owned a Mora Companion (bought for $12, modified with 90 degree spine, etc by myself) for years and it works well for all the tasks I do (even batoning). The narrower tip on the Terrasaur makes it a better field knife in my opinion. You can always make a narrow divot larger it but it’s not so easy to make a wide divot narrower. I’d be interested in how they hold up over time (edge retention, corrosion resistance etc.) because time, use and maintenance are the test for everything.

I found a video somewhere, David Canterbury I believe,.. Where he showed howTo baton wood by starting rhe split on top like you did, but then put the knife upsidedown on the chopping block with the wood on top.. Then you strike the wood with the baton driving it down onto the knife thus splitting the piece without directly strikinbthe knife blade. Pretty cool trick I thought I'd share. Cool video🙂 I’ve had a stainless Garberg since before the carbon came out. That knife is a beast. I beat the crap out of that knife! Just bring it home and wash it off in the sink and good as new 😂 it is a little tougher to sharpen though. I was really excited about talk of the terrasaur. The design has been around for a while. Fiddleback makes one. When it came out though I was kind of shocked at how badly they ripped off the Garberg. It’s an obvious knock off. They should have kept it with their awesome leather sheaths and wood handle. Maybe even sold blanks like other styles? It just left a bad taste in my mouth so I never purchased one

There are much cooler and nicer knives on the market but very few I would rather use in the woods than a Mora..I carried a $8 511 as my main belt knife for the better part of a decade and it took me a long time to find a worthy replacement..I bought a Buck 119,Gerber Prodigy,Gerber StrongArm,Cold Steel Recon Scout,Cold Steel SRK,Cold Steel Recon Tanto,ESEE 4,Becker BK2,Becker BK16,Benchmade Saddle Mountain Skinner,Benchmade Hidden Canyon,Ka Bar USMC,TOPS Baja 4.5,TOPS Tex Creek 69,TOPS Overlander and a couple different Boker knives.all of these knives were nicer knives, all of these knives were full tang, all these knives had nicer scales and all these knives were great knives in their own right but for Bushcraft none of these knives could compete with that $8 Mora 511...I’ve long since bought knives that were worthy replacements like a Bark River Scandi Aurora,L.T. Wright Genesis,Bradford Guardian 4.5,Benchmade Puukko 200,TOPS Brakimo,TOPS Scandi Trekker,TOPS Mini Scandi,ESEE 3 and the ESEE RB3 Bushcraft..even with these much nicer knives,I still use my Mora knives because those Moras hold their own against any knife in my collection at a fraction of the price.its truly unbelievable what Mora has accomplished at such a low prices.I have that old 511 that I’ve used more than any other fixed blade I own and I’ve also bought the Companion,Robust,Kansbol and the Bushcraft Black and all of these are great knives, unbelievable for the price...I’m considering picking up the Garberg and the Condor Terrasaur..I just wish the Mora would’ve used micarta scales and a nice kydex sheath or a leather dangler for the Garberg.for the price of the Garberg I think Mora could’ve done better with the handle and the sheath

Astonishingly honest review. Price is the deciding factor for me and I have not been disappointed with my choice of the condor Terrasaur

I love the Garberg but have not tested the condor yet. The Condor is not much cheaper here in Sweden and you can get the Garberg for about the same price as the Condor, still I would like to get my hands on it.

i have some 1095 knives and D2 folding, one is mora robust, and i use to go to the florest near litoral and i don't recommend to use carbon steels so near in the ocean, it is a little boring to resharp so often.

Funny how they traded places in the sheath department, as Condor is known for their excellent leather sheaths while Mora has used plastic forever. Good review, if I had to pick one I would go with the Terrasaur, price gap too wide for 2 very similar quality knives.

I agree, for the price of the Garberg I think it should’ve came with micarta scales and a decent kydex sheath or a leather dangler..the plastic handle and plastic sheaths are perfectly understandable when it comes to the Mora 511,Robust,Kansbol,Companion,etc..the only thing I like about these plastic sheaths is the fact they are ambidextrous.as a lefty this is very much appreciated..it’s very rare for me to be able to buy a fixed blade and not have to replace the sheath because sadly, factory kydex and leather sheaths are very rarely ambidextrous

Out of experience with the excellent Kansbol, i would take the Garberg; however, the Condor seems excellent as well and more economical. No mistakes with these i believe.

Probably going to grab a Terrasaur for backpacking. I don't mind a rough-looking knife, because mine get some hard use.

I like both. The mora handle appears a bit more to my liking. But, the finger guard on the condor is more to my liking. In terms of pricing I think the Bushlore might be the better comparison to the garners. I like the wood handles. Appears chunkier the Bushlore blade is a fraction longer. Of these two, I prefer the terrasaur. But only by a fraction.

Good comparison of both knives. I recently bought both and returned the Garberg. Both are great knives, but price and over all design played a factor for me. I really like the condor. My all time favorite knife though is still the Mora high q robust (gray handle) the best knife for the money ever.

I like them both. However, I can get two Condors for roughly the price of one Mora...Two knives in the bush better than one? The fit and finish of the Garberg is very nice, though. BPS Knives has a really nice budget leather sheath that will fit either and works for the Becker BK16 as well.

So I know I’m late to this party but I’m gonna give an answer I have both I’ve had the mora for about three years now in the sanvick steel that I use certain times like when I’m gonna be around a lot of water and I had a 1095 knife for my main belt carry. So I picked up the condor a little while back because why not good price good materials so yeah worth a try and I gotta say in all honesty I like the condor a little more. I gravitate towards high carbon so the 1095 which is my favorite fixed blade steel the grip is great I have large hands and don’t have an issue with either I just prefer the condor and then the price I was able to pick up the condor an marbles hunters axe and a folding corona saw for less than five bucks more than the mora all three great products for the price and a great start for a buschcraft kit I’m not saying there is anything wrong with the mora cause well there ain’t also side note if you like these you should look into the camillus bushcrafter and the terava puukko booth of which I also like more than the mora again though nothing wrong with the mora. Sorry about the paragraph in the comments section.

I like me a micro bevel on a scandi when it flat ground and not convex. Because that mages the edge more durable when the scandi is not convex.
