Review - Husky 72 inch 15 Drawer Triple Bay Tool Box

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

After numerous ordering headaches with HD, I was finally able to purchase (...and receive) this spiffy new triple bay bottom tool box to replace my 30 year old Craftsman top/bottom tool box. Not only is it a better box, the new Husky has more capacity for my tools and adds some pizazz to the garage with the new look and its shiny 6ft. stainless steel top work surface.
UPDATE: (06/19) - I built a custom backsplash for this toolbox using aluminum diamond plate in a gun metal finish trimmed out with a black border. The DIY video below documents its creation A to Z.

    ***1YR UPDATE*** I am still happy with this purchase for all the reasons stated in the video (at least at the price I got it for $799) Since then, this box has jumped in price tremendously to $1,098. If I was looking to buy again (today) at that inflated price I would change my mind and simply go with the US General instead. The USG is now $100 less and is a tougher made box, that would be enough for me to forego all the other reasons that made me choose the Husky in the first place.

    I don't see why not. If I did, I would not just screw it down but rather through bolt it down to the top in the front right corner covering the logo. If it wasn't for a vice I already have in my workbench that would be a nice add on.

    How many slides does the box have on the main big drawer? Plan on putting sockets in there and don't want to overload

  • @diymakerdan

    @diymakerdan

    4 жыл бұрын

    Just one slide on each side. I personally wouldn't overload it with like a bazillion sockets standing up and a variety of impact guns,etc as that could be a bit much for it. I have my sockets on rails so I can lay them sideways and use the skinny drawers below. I use the top drawer for the things I would normally reach for most.

  • @diymakerdan

    @diymakerdan

    3 жыл бұрын

    While not entirely new, soft close is not found on many boxes at this price point. I found it helps to keep tools from sliding around in the drawers upon hard closure and also keeps all the drawers shut-shut not hanging open a tad. After having lesser quality boxes, this is exciting to me..ymmv.

    To my knowledge the manufacturer doesn't offer such add-ons for this particular model. That's not to say something else couldn't be adapted or fabricated to accommodate. If a sidecar and a hutch was important to me I would have considered this instead. www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-80-in-10-Drawer-Tool-Chest-and-Cabinet-Combo-Matte-Black-3-Piece-HOTC8010BB1S/304589169

    DIY Maker Dan I don’t know understand why Home Depot made that a single slide. I see the other similar size box with adjustable height wood top has a double slide top drawer. I really like the stainless top over the adjustable wood top, but the double slides is swaying me that way. Why Home Depot why?!?😭

  • @diymakerdan

    Agreed! for the most commonly opened drawer it really should be a darn double slide! I wasn't aware the wood top model comes with that already and I think would be the better choice if the drawer is going to be loaded down. If you have a Harbor Freight in your area, check out the USG's too!

    Yep, Husky swayed me with their spiffy fashion. I can attest it's not as easily seen from the street because of that color and doesn't stick out like a sore thumb. If choice for me was all a function thing though, I would have gone with a USG.

    The USG has better wheels by far but is not an issue for me as it rolls nowhere. The USG is 22" deep where the Husky is 24", and my bench is already at 24" deep. The USG is also 44" tall where the Husky is just under 40" which is a working height I am used to on the old bench and adjoining bench. The USG I believe has more load capacity but I don't plan on overloading the box so that is a non issue too. The color of the Husky, soft close drawers, and the SS top is what sealed the deal for me. There is not another triple bay out there that has those options and costs less.

  • @diymakerdan

    @diymakerdan

    No worries, you have legitimate concerns and I know how it feels when we spend large sums of $ we want to make sure we get the best option for our particular situation. On the slides, the top double drawer and the first drawer below it on the left hyper extend somewhat on the left slide only when those drawers are pulled open to their limit if pulled from the left edge of the pull. It did this early on thus I am careful to not pull them open too abruptly or from only the left side of the pull. The particular model I have only has a single slide on the large top drawer, whereas the Harbor Freight model I was considering at the time had a double slider on the top drawer. If the top drawer on mine ever becomes an issue I'd just update it myself to double slide using quality drawer slides but it really hasn't to date. I mainly keep lighter items in it and sockets in the 3rd drawer down and thus I dont forsee ever having to upgrade the single slider. All other drawers function perfectly even the lower bins which have considerable weight in them and I still really like the soft close feature the Husky came with. The stainless top is still in near perfect shape, however I have a peice of tempered glass from an old coffee table on it that takes most of the beating. The stainless steel top is not as thick as a professional box such as a SnapOn and I'm sure would start looking like the moons surface if heavy parts are lumped on it. I also currently use use a peice of lexan that was left over from a screen door refurb on the right topside too and between that and the glass it covers most of the top surface and avoids the SS getting all scratched up from debris as things are slid along the surface. No issues with the wheels on mine, although it hasn't really moved since I placed it where I have it now. Just cleaned the wheels off the other day after noticing some dust accumulation and white dots on them (spider poop) and the plastic cleaned up like new. No dents anywhere on the drawers, pull handles, or framework. Just cleaned the font face of the entire box recently and only noticed a few micro chips on the handles which is probably from me leaning something against it or flak from using power tools in close proximity. Any rough work I do is usually done in my wooden bench to the left so I dont risk damaging the box If you have a local HF nearby check their similar model out too. Everything else I found new at the time was too janky for me like my old Craftsman was for weekend warrior usage. Hope that helps!

    Only thing I wish came differently would be to flip flop the left 2/3 with the right 1/3 so the long top drawer section is on the right side not the left. Other than that, I do like the tall and deep bottom drawers as now I can store larger power tools in there that never would have fit in the old toolbox.
