Yeah, but he's doing it completely wrong. That knob has no effect on tension, it is for making sure the belt doesn't drift, and you're supposed to do it with the belt running.

Hi Hand-i-Craft. I have just this week purchased this belt and disc sander. I had to get the manual from another link? Aldi kindly gave the link, and Rhod from their end was most helpful. However, your explanation and video explains the belt tensioning 100% better. Looking forward to using machine in my hobby workshop. Thanks. Aye, agree with you, it looks and seems a canny piece of kit too.

@@Hand-i-Craft Your welcome! I have been having a good think and a look about for similar products and the Clarke version of this is almost identical, I do have a question now 😆 can you bolt the sanding table from the rotating disc to the belt? 🤔🤔Mmmmm, leave it with me Connor, I’ll have a look tomorrow. The metal fence at the top of the belt can be set at 90 degrees. If you look at the video I place the piece of wood on the belt and then ‘rest’ the edge against the metal fence, don’t know if that’s what you’re after but will investigate further tomorrow

Hello Conner, apologies for such a late reply and I’ve only just seen your most recent message. I had a look yesterday and there is no simple answer to it. Firstly, no it isn’t a straight case of removing the lower plate and popping into the socket where the metal fence plate is as the lower plate rod is a different size. However the Allen key to remove the bolts is the same size so I guess with a bit of fettling and ingenuity you could end up with your desired layout. To be honest though I wouldn’t take my word for it as I could well be wrong. I’m sorry this isn’t much help but thank you for your comments😀. Leo

It can be a little confusing though as they are also releasing tools that aren’t compatible with the new platform. For example I bought a cordless nail gun from Ferrex (Aldi) last week and it is a different 18v battery, so that’s yet another charger to get confused with all my other ones😳😀

A latex 'belt cleaner' is a useful addition to any and all sanding devices. They last for ages. Cost about £9 or so. Rub them across discs and belts and sanding-blocks (abrasives glued to blocks for all sorts of purposes). They clean up the abrasive surface time and again: making the surface clean and effective again; lengthening the working life.

Darren Freer Hello Darren, thanks for the comment. In short I’m not 100% sure what the plate is for. I’ve narrowed it down to it’s either there for dust extraction purposes or for safety purposes when the belt is in the vertical position. Either way I’d recommend leaving it on, it is no fuss really removing it when changing the bel and it doesn’t get in the way when you’re using it. Can I ask is there a specific reason as to why you’d want to remove it?

Dude, it became quite obvious to me as a woodworker that you are working with only the use of one arm. Bloody hell I struggle because I have only two arms! Well done, bloody well done. I think you should consider incorporating that fact into your videos, helping people with disabilities to understand it does not have to end their world. Also, think about how you could help others by showing them how you get around your common obstacles and I don't mean the wife telling you to get in!

Cheers Sumo. From what I can see, the Ferrex / Aldi range of tools are exactly the same as Scheppach tools. I’m only speculating but maybe Scheppach have excess batches they can’t shift or a replacement product is coming in so they rebrand it and sell it through Aldi for approximately half their own list price. Aldi here call them ‘special buys’ so they aren’t continuously stocked, they have a limited amount and once they’re sold that’s it. Sometimes you can get even luckier in store as one of the shops may have to discount them again to clear the floor space so you could get it up to 50% off the list price 😀

Thanks for the message Ashraf. The way I alter the belt tension isn’t how the instruction manual says, but I do it my way more from an extra safety perspective. It may take slightly longer the method I suggest, but it works fine and it doesn’t require adjustments whilst the machine is in motion 👍

Alright Jim, thanks for the message. It’s a tough one this as, although I’ve never done it myself, I believe it’s a straightforward repair. I believe they’re called nvr switches and are readily available from eBay / screwfix etc. However as soon as you start tinkering with it the warranty is invalidated. So you might be better considering sending it back for repair which means being without the tool for a while🤷‍♂️. If you can cope without it for a bit I’d send it back. If it’s out of warranty (baring in mind it’s 3 yrs) or you simply can’t be without it for any period of time and you have basic electrical knowledge then purchasing your own replacement part might be a different option. Good luck either way! Leo 😀

Cheers. As far as I know all Workzone / Ferrex stuff are rebranded Scheppach tools. I had an issue with my tracksaw rails being bent on delivery so the replacement ones they sent me from Germany were scheppach labelled. If you look at the specs of the ferrex and scheppach belt and disc sander they are identical, yet the scheppach is twice the list price. The only possible reason I could imagine they’d do this is maybe scheppach have surplus stock so instead of tainting their brand as a ‘budget’ tool company, they change the stickers and sell them through Aldi? It’s only my idea and I’ve no idea if it’s correct, it also explains why you can only buy them certain times of the year and not regularly 🤷‍♂️

If you can fit your finger under the belt it is loose. The most likely reason is that if belt sanders are left with the belt under tension for any length of time the sanding belt stretches which eventually makes it loose. The solution is to pull the belt tension lever out after you’ve finished using the machine thus taking the tension off the belt. That way it isn’t placed under tension any more so won’t stretch. Next time you want to use the machine just push in the belt tension lever and you’re good to go.

Would love to get one of these but the frustrating thing about Aldi and Lidl is they only have them in for a very limited period. If you get to the store a day late all the good stuff is usually gone.

I know what you’re saying here Joe. I think it’s why they can keep the prices down as they only have a limited number to sell. I would suggest signing up to Aldi’s special buy email alert. It’s only once a week and it tells you what next weeks special buys are, plus you can also buy online ahead of release date so have a better chance of getting one that way? Cheers, Leo 😀

I'm finding it as an online purchase, still at £90, and would have viewed it as too cheap to be any good if it wasn't for your review - thank you. Longevity is something you can't review, though, and I worry that Chinese quality will show through. Is yours still working alright two years on? Regards, Nick.

Hello Nick, cheers for the message. Yes belt / disc sander still going great two years later. I am a little concerned though that maybe the quality of Aldi tools are quite what they once were. I’ve had a few messages recently to suggest that is the case, but maybe they’re isolated incidents 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️. Will be producing a video to this effective over the weekend to engage in a discussion about it👍

Your method of adjusting the belt tracking is wrong. The correct way, and I might add far quicker way of doing it is to have the machine running with the belt tension lever closed as normal, then, if you notice that the belt tracking needs adjustment you turn the belt tracking knob very slightly one way or the other until it is running straight. This is also how you track the belt on a hand held belt sander.

Thanks for the feedback basin. I’d have to say though how can you describe the method as ‘wrong’ when the outcome is spot on? I’d say my method is ‘different’, it might not be the way other folk do it, but it works great for me and I’m happy with my technique 👍😀. Different yes, wrong no.

Hand-i-Craft I don’t care one bit how you personally choose to do It but if you’re showing others who may be new to the equipment how to do things you should first learn the correct methods. Your method may well work perfectly after several trials and errors but it’s the wrong method and that’s not what you should be demonstrating to your audience.

Sawdust and Survival I bought a set of hose adapters a while back from Rutlands pal who had them on offer. One kind of fits with the help of some tape to make the port smaller then my wider hose fits onto it ok. Agree with you as the thing is bloody massive 😂
