Review Demo - Mesa/Boogie D-800 & Subway Ultra-Lite Cabinets

It might surprise some that the first amp produced by Mesa/Boogie-a company widely known for offerings for guitarists-was a bass amp. Dubbed the Mesa 450 and clad in silver snakeskin, it was the very first amp built from scratch by company founder Randall Smith under the Mesa name. And the design concepts of its monster power section have influenced those of nearly every high-wattage bass amp that Mesa has released since. With the new Subway D-800, however, the company decided to take a different route-one that eschewed traditional tube-based circuitry for modern class-D design. The result is an amp with impressive clarity, power, and definition that lives up to its storied pedigree, all within a pint-sized package.
The D-800’s class-D power amp provides a heady 800 watts without adding extraneous bulk. The D-800 weighs in at only 5 1/2 pounds, making it nowhere near the backbreaker that an all-tube amp with the same wattage would generally be. Simply slide it into its included padded bag, a gig bag, or a backpack, and you’re good to go.
Operating the amp is delightfully simple. Directly to the right of the 1/4" input jack is a trio of switches: an output mute, a 10 dB input pad for active pickups, and a deep switch for fattening the amp’s low end. It doesn’t take much effort to reach over and flip a switch, but I wouldn’t complain if the mute and deep modes were footswitchable on future versions of the amp. The amp’s tones are sculpted by a 4-band EQ section with controls for bass, low and high-midrange frequencies, and treble, along with knobs for setting the input gain and maneuvering between flat and boosted voicings. When the voicing dial is set to the far left, the amp has a flat frequency response. Turning it further to the right provides a gradual boost to the highs and lows, resulting in a mid-scooped sound.

Why are all demos slap happy. 90% of players couldn't care less about slap-wankery.

+jcorwin196 90% of bass players you say don't care about 'slap wankery',let's just say that YOU don't care about the slap bass technique. 90% is really a pretty high number! A large number of world renown bass players use this technique because it takes a good amount of talent to perform this style of playing. If you were to watch some of the videos available you'll see the the bass players not only use the slap style,but ,they also incorporate finger style and other styles of playing. Also,I find that bass players who are down on this style of playing is because they CAN'T play this style themselves. But I feel you because every time I see a guitar amp demoed with the distortion on to the ceiling (as if the amp doesn't have a clean channel) I feel the same way you do.

Yeah, it's wanking. Slapping is wanking. I'm down on it because it's tired as hell. Just like the guitar wankers you mention.

@@sosmooth7 phil spigner the thing is most people who slap in demos can't slap themselves...
Nice demo and explanation. Thanks.
Friggin awesome sound and playing!!!!!!
Sounds great!
With the xlr in the back , is it possible to run it straight in to a small basic interface audio box to record ?
So a 30 Hz pass... How sharp is it? Does that mean there can be issues if you play a five string, or tune very low unless you use the deep switch?
Sweeeeeeeet. I love simple Bass Amps, and despite the somewhat crappy Demo, I'm sure this one is a killer.
I have used a Mesa Big Block 750 with 1x15 and 2 x10s for years..Mesa is a lot of thing but light isn't one of them....so glad they have a Class D now.
sounds awesome
"yes you can take it on the subway" LMFAO
great tone and tight
When he set the EQ to all 12 o'clock suddenly it sounded good 04:40. Even the slapping sounded good. The scoopity-scoop EQ is not for me--too 90s.
Another channel said the Subway D 800 doesn't have a hi pass filter. You're saying it's internal. So I'm confused on which it actually is.
The bass is great !
I have the Subway D-800+, but not the original Mesa 12 and 15 inch. The FMC cabinets suits perfect in my smart car :-D
Hard to demo bass amps, but they did it right. I can hear the tone.

Wow! You have incredible hearing.
Here's my input on this amp: Bought this since my Markbass amp crapped out and I needed another lightweight amp. Was pretty expensive here in Europe though. Anyways, this a great amp. Great tones and lightweight and enough power, even at 400W. The voicing control is useless to me, it just makes the sound worse, especially after 12' clock and you just don't cut in a really loud and heavy band. But like said, the eq-controls are very useful. Also eats pedals pretty well and seems like a quality build. I'm happy with this amp. Hope it lasts for years to come.
Best to curb the sales speak in between tone settings. It disrupts the flow. Play, tweak then Play, tweak:) Thanks for showing!
Please get a different guy to do bass demos. One who doesn't turn the voicing all the way to boost, turn down the mids and crank up the bass with the deep switch on. PLEASE
And where is demoing with picks?

Cool head, just tried in a shop. Unfortunately the price and the fact that it doesn't have a send-return convinced to me to pass. Honestly it was mostly the price :-D

Judging from the font of the headstock logo, I'd say early to mid '70s. Edit: Just saw that you found out it's a '78. Sorry!
actually I think all demos should show slap Style as well this fingerstyle that's the only way you can tell what the cabinet's can really do sounds like you just hate it because you cannot do it
These premier folks never say anything negative. Sales, sales, sales.... pretty much a waste of time.
6:10 is when the mids begin
I expected more from a product with the Mesa logo on it. Sounds very “middle of the road” for something with that kind of price tag on it.
SEE folks? They DO read your comments! LOL!
Shocking explanations coupled with shocking bass playing.....who let this guy loose on great equipment??
I use a Mesa Subway 800 and have been 100% satisfied. Usually run it through either a MarkBass Traveler 1 X 12 or Epifani 2 X 10. Never needed more than I have right there. As has already been noted, it doesn't break my back (nice for a change...).

Duly noted!
Doesn't seem like it has a lot of grit toit.
The cabs sound crisp, punchy and beefy but a little overpriced.
Got it 78
this is such an under-whelming demo.
Another slapper. This demo doesn't really show what this amp is capable of. I've got this amp and it's a beast. I saw other really cool demos that made me go out and try it. If I saw this demo it would have turned me off.
My MESA M9 smokes this little thing . GET A PRO AMP.. M9
Thou shall not slap your P-Bass
"I have a much darker question for you..."
As others have said, the sound was a little "farty" and distorted in places, especially the 1x12. I've never been a fan of P bass pickups anyway. I would think a MusicMan or G&L would be a better choice to demo this amp and cabs. And again...what's with the slapping? Sure we need to know it'll stand up to that style, but almost NONE of the videos / demos I've seen feature a player just PLAYING BASS! It's always slapping or just noodling around.
STOP SLAPPING PLEASE and just play the bass

Van Halen basslines only!
Your recording is distorted on bottom end. Kinda takes away from real sound of amp and speaker. I guess it sounded ok to you. I personally would not have posted this video with sound distorted. Better luck next time
So 2mins or so in to your review showed us you basically don't like mids...? Your EQ setting was obviously set for low-volume, scooped mid tones and a heavy amount of boosted bass from the amp already. that's exactly the EQ setting to get lost in the mix at band practice. In other words, that beautiful Fender Precision Bass sounds like an active Ibanez Soundgear w the "enhance" knob all the way up like you like it.... YUCK... Um, but I'm sure it sounds amazing for your KZread sound sample here lol.. Next time set the amp flat, to be FAIR as to how not only your bass really sounds, but how Mesa's really sound before anyone goes ham w the mid scoop session pleez?
No gain nob?

No overdrive channel....forget about it, I need tube OD not silifuzz
Don't want to sound too negative but I found this review a little disappointing.
The P bass is not the best choice to demo this bass amp with. It simply does not have the flexibility of a two p/u bass,and does not do this rig any justice.
@JimijaymesProductions

+Phil Spigner Really? I know other basses are more "versatile" but a P Bass has such a recognisable tone that I think its a great basis for showing what an amp can do (although maybe one with a jazz pickup in the bridge would show more). I get annoyed at the alternative showing a nice tube amp with something like a Warwick and just dialing in a super modern tone that is useless for anything other then fusion or new funk styles. The bass equivalent of using a Telecaster or Les Paul compared to using an Ibanez JEM. This is more from a sound engineering perspective then a bass player perspective so your point may be more valid for bass players, I just thinking if demoing with anything I'd prefer a Jazz or P Bass over something less distinct.
@Jakeman90210

+JimijaymesGuitarist the only thing with a p bass is that it only has one tone. I think they should've used a Jazz Deluxe with the preamp on and off, and switch between both pickups so you get a feel of vintage and modern sounds.

+Gherkin Flout Tubanomeister I should say, try a good P, it has tons of different tones, but the players fingers need to be up for it. a P is about the hardest bass to play, all tone needs to come from the hands.
@JCreative72

lol... I do, I am just a witness of artists that can play the hell out of their P and get tones out of it that you can not think are possible. I'm just a hobby-weekend player, so I need buttons and different pickups as well.

the p bass is the worlds most iconic bass and IMO the worlds best sounding bass used on more records than anything else.
Stop that fukin slapin
Why am I yawning? Oh it sounds like a regular old um !
"You will own nothing and be happy." Hate idea of these small ass amps.
my SWR SM400S has better tone...or ... he really sucks on the slap style!
Awesome slap tone! I can't understand all the wusses who complain about slapping. Probably they're just frustrated because the can't slap :P
@FenderBassMan
5 жыл бұрын
It's likely frustration from observing an enormous majority of bass and bass equipment demos with slappers 'n poppers. Too often, that's the only style they use to demo. Seems to me that people complaining about slap bass demos are (merely) asking to hear what the bass or amp sounds like when played with a pick or using fingerstyle.
it all sounds the same. get a bassplayer to demo this. And stop slapping.
I hate slap bass
