I should start by saying that I'm not an electrician or audio engineer. I'm just a bass player, and this is the first time I've done a Bass Practice Diary video that doesn't feature any bass playing. It's also the first time that I've ever had all of my bass amp heads and speaker cabinets together in the same room.
Combo Amplifier or Amp Head and Cabinet?
I believe that having a separate head and cab has numerous benefits over using a combo amplifier. Combo amps are only practical when they're small. I own a couple of bass combo amplifiers, but I didn't feature them in this video. I use them for rehearsals and small gigs because they're small and they save space. However their use is limited. Once you get up to a medium sized bass rig, combo amplifiers become heavy and impractical.
Having a separate head and cab (or cabs) gives you many more options. Lightweight solid state bass amp heads like the Markbass heads and the Warwick LWA 1000 are small and very light, and easy to transport. And you can match your head up with different sized cabinets or combinations of two cabinets to match the requirements of your gig. Bass amp heads also give you the potential to access much more power (Wattage) than combos.
However, "with great power comes great responsibility", and there are a couple of things that you need to know if you're going to safely unlock the potential of using a bass amp head with speaker cabinets.
Ohms and Watts
Those things are Ohms (Ω) and Watts (W). It's simple stuff, but back when I was trying to work all this stuff out, it always amazed me how hard it was to find this information put together for bass players in a simple to follow guide. I'm not an electrician and I have no qualifications in audio engineering, but this is my simple guide to Ohms and Watts for bass players.
All you need to know about Ohms, is that bass speaker cabinets are rated at either 4 Ohms or 8 Ohms. You need to know whether your cabinet is rated at 4 or 8 Ohms before you use it. If you run two speaker cabinets together (in parallel), then the Ohm rating halves, not doubles. So, two 8 Ohm speakers running in parallel makes a total of 4 Ohms. Virtually all bass amp heads are designed to run at a minimum of 4 Ohms. So you shouldn't run two 4 Ohm speakers together. That would be 2 Ohms, which would be below the minimum level that the amp is designed to run at. You should also never switch your amp head on without a cabinet connected, because that would be zero Ohms.
RMS stands for Root Mean Squared. The RMS power rating (Watts) is two things. It's the amount of continuous power that your amplifier is capable of putting out. And it's also the amount of continuous power that a speaker cabinet is capable of handling. Before you use a speaker, you need to know how many Ohms it's rated at and the RMS power rating. I've heard that some amp companies exaggerate the power handling capabilities of their speakers. They give the maximum Wattage that a speaker can handle, rather than the Root Mean Squared. RMS is the amount of continuous power it can handle. You need to make sure you know the RMS value for the Wattage.
How are Ohms and Watts Connected?
The number of Ohms your speaker is rated for will effect the RMS power that your amp head puts out. When amp manufacturers give the power ratings of their amps, they always give the RMS rating at 4 Ohms. However, if you read the technical specs for any amp head, it should give two RMS ratings. One for 4 Ohms and one for 8 Ohms. For example, the Warwick LWA 1000 is so called because it has the potential to run at 1000W RMS at 4 Ohms. At 8 Ohms it's only 500W RMS.
So, in order to unlock the full power of your amp head, you need to run it either into a 4 Ohm speaker or into two 8 Ohm speakers. However, it's not necessarily a bad thing to connect your amp head to just one 8 Ohm speaker. In fact, that's what I do most often when I take my amps out for rehearsals or gigs. The problem with running very high powered amps at 4 Ohms is finding speaker cabinets that have high enough RMS ratings. To safely match a 1000W bass head at 4 Ohms you'll need a really big rig. Either two 8 Ohm cabinets rated at at least 500W RMS each, or a massive 4 Ohm cabinet, like an 8x10 with a rating of at least 1000W RMS.
Can You Match a Higher Powered Amp with a Lower Powered Speaker?
Surprisingly, yes you can. Some people will tell you, that if you have a bass amp head rated at 800W RMS for 4 Ohms and a 4 Ohm speaker rated at 500W, then the head is too powerful for the cab. It seems logical that an 800W amp is too powerful for a 500W cab. But it's actually fine, as long as you don't push the speaker really hard. If you play through the amp well below full volume, it should be fine. The speaker will let you know if you're pushing it too hard, because it will start to sound bad.

I would like to add that in my opinion, Carvin is very helpful. When I bought a 2x12" bass speaker cabinet online from them some years ago (to add to my existing Carvin R1000 cab and 1x15" setup), it had no documentation, so I called them, and they answered my questions on the phone. As it turned out, I had purchased a 4 ohm cabinet without understanding that I needed an 8 ohm if I wanted to use the 2 cabs together. They helped me sort it all out and now I have a fantastic sounding dual cab setup.

That's crazy how you're right about the lack of informations in user's guide. The bass player in my former band was playing à TC Electronic combo (can't remember the exact model) which was sold as a 250w amp. We thought it sounded weak for a 250 w amp but we finaly learned that the power rating was for 4 ohms speakers and the speaker that came with it was actually 8 ohms. Wish I saw this video at the time ! Thank you for uploading it !

I have a similar story. I bought a Peavey Max 208 bass combo. The max series are great amps, but their power ratings are misleading because you have to buy an extension cab to get the full output from the amp. Peavey doesn’t like to tell you that.

Really good information here and well explained .What surprised me was the lack of proper instructions, especially to somebody new to Group gear amplification that are relying on a step by step guide to safely connect their new equipment up safely.
When the amplifier is not connected to the speaker, the resistance is infinite, thus still within the 4 ohm minimum requirement. (In my humble opinion)

Yes, the real reason you STILL should NOT be connecting and disconnecting in a powered on state is the possible sparks on connection that might be damaging to the components or at least cause some really awful noises on the speaker

From memory, my SWR amp manual had a quite a good explanation on single speaker vs parallel speaker impedance and amplifier output. I think there was a couple of pages on it. Including what gauge cable to use.

I keep hearing that you have to make sure your speaker cabinet has enough power handling capability. Maybe things have changed, but I learned an important lesson back in the late 70's and early 80's with my stereos. As a teenager, I had a 45W Kenwood stereo receiver going to 100W Kenwood speakers. I must have blown out a tweeter on those speakers 3 or 4 times over a few years. I learned that since the amp wasn't a very high wattage amp, it was clipping the signal, and that's notorious for blowing out tweeters. In the 80's, I purchased a 250W Soundcraftsmen amplifier. That beast never blew out speakers...EVER! We even tried to blow out an old pair of Radio Shack speakers (I think they were rated 100W), and we couldn't. The signal from that amp was so clean and it never clipped. Maybe this principal is more applicable to tweeters, but since then I've always chosen to error on having TOO MUCH amplifier power over too little.

Excellent video man, thank you. My new head's fans went insane, I plugged into a load with a bad speaker cable and I think maybe it was cutting out connection to the load. I made sure to turn it off when that happened. I also played not plugged into a load, but with the headphones connected. My head is OK but it would have been nice to know not to turn it on unless it was plugged into a load. I also had a knob turned way up that could have damaged the speakers and didn't know that either. I'm pretty sure my head and cab are OK but damn what a couple of close calls, especially when I was playing loud. It's a Peavey MiniMega 1000 watt head connected to a BAG END Q10BX-D. I'm still hoping I didn't damage anything WTAF.
Tc Electronics explains every possible thing that you need to know with ohms and power ratings for bass heads.
Analogy of ohms to a head: A bucket full of water w holes drilled in it. 1 1/8 inch hole drains so much water. Imagine that 8Ω. 2 1/8 holes give twice the paths for water to pour out, less resistance, twice the watts at 4Ω 1 1/4 inch hole is less resistance than 1 1/8 inch hole so flows twice the juice. Imagine 4Ω. 2 1/4 inch holes are half the resistance of 1 1/4 inch hole, half the resistance, twice the flow. Imagine 2Ω. This amount of juice burns out your transistors. The analogy is imperfect because circles have a lot more area for twice the diameter.
Thanks for the clear explanation. I got two 8 ohm ampeg cabs and an ampeg head (svt 4 pro) that has both, 2 separate outputs and a mono output. Is there an advantage to connect in daisy chain (As i do now) over 2 separate outputs ? Note : i use this seup only in my music roon, no live, too heavy...😊....for live i use a more handy combo. A very good and informative presentation in a subject not well covered. I would question one point however that was stated about not turning on the amplifier without a speaker being plugged in. An Ohm is a measurement of electrical resistance. With no speaker plugged in the electrical resistance would be infinite not 0, therefore it would do no damage to the amplifier. "0" resistance would be considered an electrical short circuit. Infinite resistance is , well infinite resistance. Again a great video. Thanks
In practise it’s fine to run an over or under amped combination , you just need to be aware of the potential issues. For rehearsals I generally use my 700w amp with a 2x10 that’s rated 150w. As long as I don’t drive the cab too hard it’s fine.

I appreciate the little labeling you did during this video to differentiate the steps you are explaining. So, I got a Ampeg 6x10 cab that has a power of 600W @4 Ohms. But I want this Ampeg V-4B Tube bass head that only has a power of 100W and it supports 2, 4, and 8 ohms. What are the cons (and/or pros) of having having an amp head with a power that is significantly lower than what my cab can put out?

Hi Arthur, I can't give you a technical explanation, but I've been told that it's not a good idea to use a head with a low RMS power rating into a cab with a much higher RMS. I believe it's not good for the amp.

If I need more power for a gig I’m entertaining the idea of adding a fender rumble 115 v3 extension cab (600 watt 300 rms 8hm) to my ampeg ba 210 v2 ( 283 watt @ 4ohm, 450 @ 8) via the extension out jack. Other than offending other bass players do you think this is an advisable pairing spec wise? My thought process is to add a 15 for more low end thump where I already have 2 10’s handling the punchy sound. I’d love to get some feed back! Thanks
Hey man I got a question.... so I have a mark bass amp combo,“ CMD 102P” the impedance is 8ohms and I just got a mark bass cabinet, so I didn’t know which one to get so I got the 4ohms.... is it fine ? Or should I get the 8ohms? The cabinet I have is the “Markbass Traveler 102P Rear-Ported Compact 2x10 Bass Speaker Cabinet 4 Ohm” And the amp combo is the “Markbass CMD 102P 300/500W 2x10 Tilt-Back Bass Combo Amp”

Hi Jonny, great vid, thanks. My question is about turning on an amp without connecting to a cab. A lot of heads have a headphone out socket for quiet practice. Surely if the head has this feature I wouldn’t need to connect to a cab? Unless of course connecting headphones mutes the output to the cabs? Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks, I just bought a Warwick head, and indeed no mention of how to correctly pair it with a speaker. In step one, they do mention the need to unpack the amp, albeit for this instruction they write in German language, while the other 4 steps are English. If my German was even worse I would have totally missed that first step...

I think I have the answer from. This but I'm just not sure. I have a marshall dbs 7400 amp head and a marshall dbs 7415 cab. I read the amp is capable of pushing its peak 2000 watts at 2 ohms. So am I able to get another 7410 or 7412 and run them both with the one head and get more power ?

Hi, thanks for upload this video. I bought a line 6 lowdown HD750 amplifier (750 w) and i want to buy two cabinets of 8 ohms. Wich brand do you recomend me? Hartke, ampeg or gallien Krueger? I was thinking about buying 4x10" cabinet 500w RMS, and 1x15" 400w RMS. It doesn't matter that 1 cabinet has more watts? Thanks in advance
Great content .... but what about adding cabinets in series ? I wonder why someone would do that since it would make 2 8 omh cabinets 16 ohms. Not sure of the math, but would that not run a 800 w amp at about 300 w ? What benefit would that provide?
When you connect no speaker on a Digital amp you do not have 0Ω but you have ∞Ω. This does not destroy any digital amp because no current is flowing. On a Tube amp - in opposite- the lack of load will bring your Tubes into a bad area of your amplification curve so the result could be defective tubes (depending on circuit). Also the Ω on Speakers and Amps is impedance not resistance. it is not static but the 8 or 4Ω are averaged out resistance values over direct current measures. As every Speaker has different impedance response even when connecting the "right" impedance it can lead to strange effects as the speakers influence each others response. All over Digital amps are easy with anything and I have seen no Digital amp blowing up below 4 ohms just yet. Might sound a bit bad but hey.. it´s digital ;) . I still appreciate your efforts telling folks a little about this. Yes manuals are ridiculous everywhere
Just purchased a Mesa D350 head with 2 1x12 8 ohm subway cabs. With this combo am I safe and will i achieve the max 350 while running all together. Thx for all. Bob
Same concept applies with guitar amps push higher wattage amp through a lower wattage speaker and you can blow it with ease for example if I take my origin 50 and drive a orange 1x8 mini cab I can end up blowing the cab because the origin 50 is a 50w head, always match your amps wattage to your cab you can get away with an lower wattage amp just remember that you’re not gonna be as loud as higher wattage amp though it’ll still get loud, running my Friedman be mini 30w solid state mini amp head through a Marshall 4x12 240w cab and it gets pretty loud.
What about a 5.3 ohm cabinet with a 8 ohm cabinet into a 1000 watt head ? It says 4 ohm minimum on the back of the head though , it’s the bullhead 1k by trickfish

Hi, thank you! Yes, If the the Cab is rated at 4 Ohms and 400w RMS then I would say it's well matched for a 500w head. The RMS rating on the cab tells you what the cab can continuously handle. It should be capable of handling short bursts of more than 400w. So, unless you're planning to run the amp head at full volume a lot (I'm sure you're not) then you won't have any problems. Also, you'll hear if you're pushing the cab too hard and you can turn it down if necessary.

What's the appropriate cabinet for pairing peavey minimega bass head? 🤔🤔

I have the chance to buy a WCA210 cabinet, very similar to 2x8. I assume they are good enough for delivering quality sound produced by your Markbass amp, but I would like to hear your opinion. Thank you! I like the Warwick cabinets. I've used them quite a bit with my Markbass Little Mark III head. I think they give quite an honest representation of the sound of the amp. They don't colour the sound too much. The 2x8 doesn't give a huge amount of low end, but you wouldn't expect it to. 👍🎶

Important question. If I have a bass head that is rated 400 watts at 2ohms, but only 175 watts at 8ohms, and I’m running it into an 8ohm cab, is it safe to use a cab that’s only rated for, let’s say 200 watts RMS? In other words, does more resistance make it safer to use a cab less power handling?
Hi Johnny. Great video. I have a question about tube heads. What would happen if I ran a Fender Super Bassman 300 through a Markbass 104HF that is rated 800 watts at 4 ohms? Would there not be enough power from the head to the speaker (if I ran the head at 4 ohms)? Or would the tubes be too loud for the speaker to handle? Thanks in advance.

I think its tube amps (with power tubes) that need to have a speaker load on them, cheers.
My amp is for 4 or 2 ohm cabs....my cab is 8 ohms. Was hoping there would be some talk about this
