I love technical pens. I wear out the felt tips on copic sp pens. I purchased them believing that they would last because they were refillable. So, I am disappointed. I just read that you can't get replacement tips any more for them. Thanks for your reviews. You have the best no nonsense, straight to the point reviews and I appreciate that!

I've used a few different SP Pens and I have to say that they do wear out very fast, to the point where I've given up on them and I stick to the Copic disposable multi liners exclusively. You hit the nail on the head when you pointed out the vertical drawing angle with the SP's. Great review Teoh.

Wow! Thank you for this. I am shopping for my teenager's first set of Manga pens, and your video has been extremely helpful. I love your drawings, too.

I found a hack for the SP versions tip being worn. If you have a cheap wet stone with a fine grain side to it, you can round off the edges of the felt tip very lightly by dragging it in one direction while you rotate the pen. It will round out the edges just enough so the ink will flow smoothly when using it at a tilted angle. just don't go crazy rounding it down. I suggest tilting it at maybe a 25 degree angle or so while doing this

It led me to purchase the hand book sketchbooks and after many decades I broke down and spent the money to buy a Winsor and Newton field box. I am very pleased with both. I have just bought a number of Copic Multiliners and just love them. I used them the whole time whilst sketching in Valencia recently and was really impressed. They were great with watercolour washes. I think I , too would stick with the disposable ones as mine also became a little 'used'. Thanks once more for an excellent and honest review.

For disposable pens I like the staedtler pigment liner. The staedtler nib size when compared to copic is smaller for the .05 and .3. The .2 was also smaller but i use the .2 the most so it could be flatter. The black is also slightly darker.

I have almost the complete set of both the fineliners and brush pens and I prefer these over all others as the can be used over acrylics to get the fine lines I need. I use most media and hope I can buy up as many of the sp line as I can. I also use micron, Mitsubishi and many others, but absolutely love the feel and performance of the SP copies.

I use the Copic multiliners as well as the Sakura microns. They're great on hot press paper. Tried using them on a rougher paper and didn't get good results. Great review.

Try moving to technical pens. I used to use Pigma microns and I have stacks of empty Microns in my room. They're disposable so I stopped using them, and started using technical pens and fountain pens for drawing, haven't looked back, specially because they're refillable

I've been tempted to get some SPs, thinking that they might feel nicer in the hand, but your review has helped me decide to stick with the disposables. Even in USA at this time, it costs as much for either a new nib or refill than an entire disposable pen. I also enjoy your sketches and art style. You generally communicate very salient points in your reviews. Thanks for providing such valuable info and such good inspiration!

very nice Review, I really liked that you gave attention to the fact that it wears down quick. I tend to use paper with some thooth and this kind of pens go very fast. as an alternative I use more the hi tec from pilot, the metal tip resists a lot more. keep up the awesome work man!

Thank you for your video! I use mostly Sagura Pigma technical pens because they are by far the easiest to find here in Finland. In recent month I've tried some Uniball pens but I keep going back to the Pigma pens. I think they are very long lasting.

Forever lasting, because you can just refill

I do like to use "technical pens" because of the reliable line. Copics are handy for adding the feeling of color, without dealing with the requirements of watercolor, however, the sweep and generalization of watercolor is certainly not there.

I've been trying new illustration/liner pens to try and boost my amount along with trying things out of my normal comfort zone. Hopefully, if I get the disposables they'll be good. I work for a popular supply chain that sells them, but I was scared that they'd be horrible because of the reviews. Now, I just gotta see if Staedler is worth the price or just get the Copic Multis instead. Thank you very much!

I can already see that the Pentel Pocket Brush Pen (which I also have) is superior to this brush pen nib by Copic, as it provides greater depth of line-expression and finer width control from the brush hair vs. sponge. As long as you don't toss them away It's fine to use disposable pens, but you really shouldn't throw empty pens in the trash, cause they'll harm the environment specially marine animals. So to me it's worth it to use the SP, and you can get refills straight from Japan more affordably, using Rakuten or something like that You should consider also moving to technical pens and fountain pens for art. I used to be a diehard Micron user (and I have a mountain of empty Microns in my room that I need to figure what to do with them without tossing them), but when my dad gave me a Rotring isograph college set, that was a game changer for me, and I found that I can use technical pens for final drawing really comfortably. A fountain pen with a flex nib is just as good as a mangaka dip pen, without the hassle of having to dip the pen all the time

Do you ever use (or have you ever used) Koh I Noor rapidograph technical pens? I'd be interested to hear your opinion. I think they're fragile and finicky, and I'd rather spend my time drawing instead of fussing with my pen. But maybe I'm using them wrong.

There's also an environmental aspect to take into account. The refills probably use less plastic than a new pen and this plastic is not connected to metal parts - easier to recycle. But it sucks it's not cheaper to use refills.

Good review. I only use comic multiliners and uni ball uni pin fine liners. I am looking to buy the comic SP though because I’m actually wanting a pen I can fill with white ink. I’m not sure if I can do that, but I assume it’s possible. The only pen I have seen where I can do that, is the rotring liners, which are VERY expensive. I think around $90 each from memory.

You can check out Uniball white gel pens, or Sakura Gelly Roll. Or get white Bombay India Ink and use a dip pen.

I am trying to enjoy my 003 and 005. However, they do not keep ink in the nib as quickly as I hoped. I do a lot of line work and sometimes find the ink reserve in the nib sparse. It creates an issue if I am hatching especially. Having tired multimedia paper, watercolor and hot press also inflict the same issue. Sigh. I feel like I might as well keep buying Microns.

They should not differ too much in terms of quality, you can get both to try. I recommend getting the one that's cheaper or easier to get so that it's more economical in the long run, especially if you're going to use them often. I'll try to review the Staedler pigment liners in the (not so near) future.

+Teoh Yi Chie I would like to add another thing, Ive finished a watercolor piece but I used an artists gummed tape to mount it on to the board (the tape that needs to be moistened to be sticky) How do you remove it without destroying the paper????? Ive came across loads of articles but none gave me an ABSOLUTE TRUE way of removing it.. :(. Thank you Teoh :D

+Samermc9 I have not heard of those tapes before. I suggest you use the tape on some other surface and try removing that before you remove the one from your painting.

I bought the Multiliners and when I opened them were broken down, I didn’t realize it until 2 weeks ago

A little bit ago I bought the disposable pen and it broke after having if for less then a month. So I’m not sure if I should buy a new one or consider a new brand with how quick mine broke.

I've tried a few different types of solid/fibre-tipped brush pens - Zebra, Kuretake, Pitt, Pigma - and I have to say the weird sponge tip they use on the Copic SP is the worst. Most of the others, at least you have to use them a bit before they start to fray and you lose the fine tip and half the line variation. The Copic SP brush, it's a fight to get a fine line out of it right from the start. I've relegated the one I have to filling in spot blacks, at least until I can figure out a way to sort out a mapping quill nib and free-flowing ink with it.

Going off on a tangent: after an hour or so of digging, pulling, bleeding and cursing, I don't think it'll be so easy to stick a crow quill on a Copic SP. But I found out that a Gillott 659 crow quill fits pretty nicely onto the feed of Jinhao's version of the old Parker 51 hooded nib. Might not be a perfect replacement for the Zebra G/Jinhao x750 combination (which I already use) because I'd have to trim 8-9mm off the back of the Gillott nib, but it might be an excuse to buy another Jinhao 51a...

I use 0.5 most. Different artists have different preferences. Some artist like really thin lines. Drawing with 0.8 can be difficult because the thick lines can draw focus onto themselves.

You can swap the nibs around. They are interchangeable. BUT the number on the cap will be confusing if you're using a 0.1 tip under a 0.3 cap.

I was just wondering. Came across them when on Amazon when I bought Sakura Pigma Microns.

I don't care if i'm years late but these things r my go-to multiliners. I have some sakura fineliners but copics. ah, always take the cake. The number I use the most though is 0.8 and 0.1

If the nib is still good, just pull the nib on the “disposable” ones and drip some India/Bombay ink in... it’s cheap and waterproof! I do the same with my Pigma Microns... no more “disposable”... 🤗🤗🤗

Are the pen nibs, other than being refillable, exactly the same fir both types?

which kind of color you used for your drawings of your notebook?

Do you consider the Sakura Microns and the Faber-Castell Pitt Pens to be technical pens? I'm not sure if they are different from the multi liners.

I like and have both. be careful with metal body copic ,as the metal is thin and can dent . but other than that worth the money.

Will this ink fine liner dry and is okay to use on cels?? like for cel animation?

So are there any major difference between the quality of Copic Multiliners, Sakura Micron, Artline and Uni disposable tech pens? I was thinking about trying out Copic Multiliners and stumbled upon this review. Not that there's something wrong but, I'm still an art student and I need to be economical about buying art materials. Any thoughts? Hope you'd get to read this soonest! Your videos help a lot of people :)

Personally, I don't think there's significant difference between each brands. I normally go for the pen that's easiest for me to buy local. Can u tell me whats difference between replaceable cartdrige ink type A nad B?

Theoretically, with the SP, couldn't you use multiple nibs with one pen, and carry those around with more cartridges as well? I like the idea of not having to throw the entire pen out when I am done with it.

Do you not think of the waste of buying more and more disposable pens? I've switched to fountain pens recently as I can refill them with much less waste (especially Noodler's) and the tips can be found in various sizes and last a very long time.

It's definitely more expensive in the long run with such pens. I only use these when I need specific line weights and they have a lot to choose from.

Teoh Yi Chie I meant waste towards the environment as it gets buried with other waste - unless they recycle pens near you. Cost effective is also a good thing to go for but as you say - it costs more where you live.

+theartyone The ink cartridge itself is also plastic and will go to landfill. Anyway, there is very little we can do as consumers. Companies are the ones that can make the difference if they switch to using biodegradeable materials, that is if they do care about the environment in the first place.

Here in Dayton OH we have recycling spots. When I use up a pen etc I just break it down and take it along with the other recyclables.

Where do you usually buy these? I don't find them very accessible. Haha! They are a DREAM to write and draw in.

Teoh, have you done, or will you consider doing a profession video? Like learning to draw in Singapore, and how it helps, where it may get you, that kind that gives some insight on careers related to your industry? I have watched other types of videos for close to 10 years now. Sometimes, the KZreadrs will make a video on education, work experiences, and career pathway for their industry.

+Lisa Armato Hi, I have those metal tip technical pens, an Isograph. They are good but need maintenance. One downside is they can be scratchy

There's a not so famous one that has been new to the market in my country, I even thought it was a national brand or something, but it actually says Made in Japan, they are called Filgo Drawing Pen. The 0.05 size seems to produce a thinner line than most and the ink goes very smooth. My only problem with them is that they fade quite a bit when erasing the pencil lines and you need to go over a few parts again, but I still love how thin they are.

where to buy it

I can't seem to find copic markers in Canada. I thought technical pens used needle point tips, so don't wear out like felt. Maybe I'm out of date. Then again I thought copic markers were alcohol-based and for doing grey tones.

+John Matthias There are lots of colours for Copic markers. And it can get very expensive to get them all, or even a selection of them. Having a few gray tone markers is great for practicing tonal values.

I used to keep a set of three cool and three warm greys for technical illustrations. I had heard that copics were both nice and cheap, but they have to be ordered from the USA it seems, or Japan, so not so cheap here (so much for Free Trade). I don't have a good idea how mixed media interact - markets, watercolour, gouache, pencil and what have you. The subject for a show or two? ;-)

it depends on how you apply the presure on the pen,you don't need to apply too much pressure..I am using my Copic Sp 0.03 almost 6 years,and I just have just change the nibble a month ago...When using a Copic SP, you must apply a feather touch when writing...

I just bought myself a cool grey 0.03 multiliner pen today.

On grained paper the 0.2 tip wearing fast, the 0.1, 0.05 are even worse (the 0.1 could last only for 2-3 A4 paper, ridiculous).

+Lucho jimenez I guess you can. But the felt tip usually wear out faster than the ink being used up. If there is a line width provided by fountain pens, fountain pen is the better choice because it lasts longer.
