Timeline, you need to redo this sound mixing, Tony's volume goes down considerably at times, barely able to understand what he is saying. And this is such an interesting episode!

When he's speaking on camera, the sound is fine. When he's simply narrating, the sound drops off. Not mixed well.

Clearly the original was mixed for surround sound. The narration is supposed to be all-around, and the on-camera audio is meant to come from center-stereo.

Tony is an unbelievably likable dude. I’m been binging these shows for the last week. So interesting! 👍🏻👍🏻
Ack, gotta join the chorus - the sound mix is nuts. When Tony speaks on camera the sound is clear and loud but as soon as we switch to the voiceover narration his voice is barely audible behind shrill sound effects and music. If you then jack the sound up, you'll be blasted out of your seat when he speaks on camera again. I'm pretty sure that your average documentary viewer is 10000000x more interested in what the narrator has to say than having their eardrums cored out by the "background" music. This one needs a sound do-over.

What annoys me, during Timeteam, is when an advertisement break begins REGARDLESS of where the narrator is....sometimes it is in the middle of a word even!

Almost all the videos on YT are like this, the loud music is so annoying. They try to appeal to our emotions instead of our intellect.
@delusionnnnn

@@3John-Bishop It's not deliberate, it's content created for TV and not correctly remastered from source audio. It's not just the music that's off, sometimes one channel is completely out of kilter. In the first two minutes, the vocals are at three distinct volumes, two of them completely incorrect. Incorrectly downmixing multichannel audio will always get you in trouble.

I suspect it's because the voiceover was originally mixed into the center channel, while the live parts were stereo, and this video was taken from the 5.1 mix, which just took the center channel and chucked it in the bin, rather than down-mixing (or ripping the video with the stereo mix, if it was available).
Yeah... sound problem. As if the show was in stereo and you only took one side. Sometimes we can hear him clearly and others he's muffled. I don't know why they'd move the narration around like that but that appears to be the problem.

English documentaries seem typically music-loud and narration-light. Just my experience... I typically find them annoying because of that. What could have been an interesting documentary of mixed fact and legend and good narration is a noisy, distracting cacophony of uneven noise

Beautiful landscape!
While on one hand I agree that the audio does tend to fade out a bit when the music first comes on, it seems to rectify itself after a moment or two. What strikes me is how a viewer can possibly complain especially during the times we currently live in instead of feeling gratitude for being able to view this type of programming, small glitches and all. (And the ‘him’ you refer to is Sir Tony Robinson, whom I thank every time I watch one of these wonderful videos.)

Background music is too loud. Extremely distracting.
The thumbnail is hilarious. Tony looks like he did an ounce of White Widow
Wow.. listening on my phone I was surprised to hear so many comments about poor sound quality.. I was just admiring your background at the end. Steel garage with a lil' wood stove. Looks cozy.. Good video. Have you ever doing a search for any and all 1800's construction photos you can find? It would be interested to see what's actually documented vs what's taken for granite.. wink
Tony is my favorite documentary presenter! He is just lovely

Im a retired Celtic warrior myself. Took a few arrows and several war hammer strikes but i wouldnt change a thing
I so want to go to hay and visit that book shop and festival.
I wonder if the name, Offa, isn't the real, original, King Ar-fa (ar-fha) weren't one and the same person. The times are about right, and the name of the first Au-ffa, is damn close to the second name. Just a thought. I'm irritated that I didn't take this lovely trek when I was younger and a bit more spry! But it was lovely to take it with Tony, wasn't it?

sounds like you guys lost the center channel in the transfer.

Nice music track. Audible Narration would be nice too.
There actually is a documentary between the 11x2 advertisements!!
Brilliant subject matter and really enjoyed the video but what has happened to sound mixers today, everything made today seems to have music too loud and dialogue you can barely hear, you turn it up to hear the narrative and then get your ears perforated by loud music.
Please clean up the sound problems for this great series!
Tony is so lucky to see all these old place ,wonderful beautiful country sides.my ancestors call me to all these places, one day ill go back i dont know how but my soul will be back
Great audio and an Ad-blocker does the trick here.
I need to hook up speakers. When Tony is walking the sound does go way down. Great story though.
THE AUDIO COULD BE FIXED, But not by us, this blunder is the post production error. Someone could fix this...
Fire the sound editor or whoever is responsible for the bad sound. No excuses.
I see that others have complained about the sound mixing on this vid. I'm only three minutes in, and it's driving me nuts, too.
This is billed as being about Boudicca, but the programme is about Offa. They couldn't be much further apart and still be in England! lol. Not to mention the Timescales. Has anyone succeeded in finding the Boudicca episode?
The sound sucks, which is too bad as the show is very interesting and beautiful.
March 2021, audio hasn't been fixed. :(
The audio is unbalanced. I had to keep fiddling with the volume every now and then because whenever the audio comes in, it would hurt my ears.
First aired October 22, 2016, I think.
Would have enjoyed it IF the Damn Music didn't drown out the diolog!! Why, why why, do they do this???😠😠

Arthur and the Round Table and Knights..... was he really cremated on a boat like a Viking ?
Music is too loud. It almost drowns out Tony’s narration. Needs to be fixed.
Love the show, huge fan, just one complaint, the talking sometimes gets really loud and I can't hear the music. Is it possible to turn up the music and just turn down the talking? No one hears the talking or cares about it anyway
The sound modulation is not good. Not to mention, the in-episode adverts are WAY TOO LOUD
Also... if you had pints enough, King Arthur and King Offa can be pronunced reasonably similar.
That cave... I'm almost certain it is where the killer rabbit lived... 🐰 one ought to excavate and check for the shrapnel from the Holy Handgrenade!
Listening to the pronunciation of "King Offa" sounds quite like "King "Arthur". Are historians sure they weren't one and the same?

Yeah if not for history we would be living back in time
Nice program but the audio fluctuates....
the music is way too loud makes it difficult to hear the narrator, very frustrating- poor production
You guys can do better with the volume levels.
The sound mixing is horrible. Tony's voice is overshadowed by the music at all times and it gets tedious to listen to. Please fix this, this isn't the first time this happens in these films.
voice over sound needs upping !
Background music so loud that I could not understand and quickly tuned out. Regrettable.
Sound is awful
Background music was perfect. Could be louder. I prefer it to completely drown out any speakers voice.
Yeah,It would have been nice to hear all the dialog....Y'know, the talking parts?
Sound when he is talking is extremely poor.
Doesn't "Offa" sound kind of like "Arthur"? 🤔
