Absolutely agree! Wish they had hired him to host the New Time Team. He has the up energy, intelligence, fluid speech, and Witt. Not to be negative about the host they choose, he's good, but just doesn't have the quick energy, the pace Tony set, and it is necessary, it's what the show needs. I'm surprised they didn't realize this. Jonathan is absolutely the man to Host the new show.

The bit with Phil Harding was really funny. Good digger!

"how did it go?" "they dug up my whole back yard, turned over ever stone, everything. I smoothed it out and planted potatoes. the neighbor says "great, now you call in that there might be contraband in my yard, I want to plant beans"

The chapel location is most likely on church grounds, to the right at 25.19 marked (Victorian Finds) under tomb stones and the timber yard. The glass is from a church window and not simply a Victorian decorative piece.. FESSOR..24.52. Confessor would have been placed at the base of the middle arched stone window of the three stone arches on the western wall in pride of place in the chapel, as shown in the 1720 illustration with the three stone arches bricked up. The curved piece of large glass as shown at 25.15 with the oak leaf pattern would have been situated in the design of the window at the very top of the middle arch of the western facing wall. You will notice there is no lead framing for the glass in the finds tray; that is because it has been salvaged . the demolishers have pulled the stained glass out first ; lead removed from the glass pieces and the glass dropped to the ground, which means the middle of the western chapel wall is within arms length of where the glass was found in the direction of the timber yard and into the church ground. I have worked in stained glass church window restoration for thirty years. the date of the glass is correct around 1840 with silver stain to the exterior of the lettering, the gold appearance you see. I can only conclude the chapel was still standing in or around 1820, 1860, with the decorative stained glass shown here in place. The chapel was still standing in 1806, which fits in well with the church glass shown here.

I love that young lady. She has a nice personality and a fun person.

The most intriguing English monarch for me is King Edward the Confessor! I would love to see more content on him.

@@johnhagemeyer8578 These are reedited versions of episodes from quite a number of years ago. Wikipedia tells us that Helens family consists of two sons and a daughter. I'm not sure if this was her first child or on of the later ones. It is however the first one that is shown in an episode of TT.

at the end when they are reading about the "barn" being pulled down, it says 'Continued to be used as a barn or "Out-house". Here in the States, an out-house is a privy. So did they maybe still find part of the chapel???

Just because the Time Team set a three day deadline for themselves does not mean that archeological exploration stops at the site. If substantial evidence is found, it might be taken up by the "crown".

I love to see the townsfolk in these and other shows. They seem such lovely places and people. it almost makes me wonder if the amount of drama and murders shown in Midsomer Murders might be an exaggeration! /s😉

Done some digging on Ed the Con in the histories. Seems he had a thing for allowing a young servant help himself from the treasure chest at the foot of Ed’s bed. Next thing recorded is the council of nobles advising Ed to marry (which he doesn’t consumate). Anyway, I’m hoping when they do an analysis of his cousins body at Fecamp, it turns out to be the young Edward instead.

There was a more than fair amount of "those whom preferred younger men", in the Royal History. In not judging just noticed it tended to be the case quite often. Unclear if it was purely a sexual interest (like other's cultures in History) or if they were actually homosexual. Royal stories do comprise some diverse Psycholigy. ...and highly evident + prevalent in "Narcissist Personality Disorder", also.

It is sometimes extremely difficult to know with certainty the sexual orientation of Monarchs. This is partly due to the kind of language used in antiquity but more directly that it was an exceedingly easy way to lose your life to criticize, insult, of question the character of the monarch. Historians can look at the court records to try to infer which Kings had a special interest in certain young courtiers, but it should also be kept in mind that SOME British monarchs were known in their own time and since as exceedingly pious. Whether or not Edward the Confessor was gay, pious or simply more interested in building his Abbey… we may never know. There is also the possibility he was traumatized by his Saxon father and brothers who most assuredly it seems were not overly pious.

@@cynric5437 From the historic records available to us, it seems the lineage of Saxon Kings was less about a willing honor and birthright and more about the last man standing. Not sure if the dates you mention are a veiled barb to the French, because you know it’s an English art form. But Edward was very far down the list of possible Kings from his father Æthelred the Unready(way to instill confidence) just in terms of sons from the Kings first marriage and then his older full brother and that’s without the constant harassment of the Kingdom of Wessex by those pesky Vikings. He is the most unassuming monarch to have an utterly fascinating impact and history of pre-Norman Britain. It’s hard to work out what the UK would be like if old Billy the Bastard had not have prevailed at Hastings in 1066

@@playnicechannel Just referencing Ed’s time in exile. Re number 6 of 7. Look at date of death for his older 5 brothers. Only 2 survive their dad. Youngest one survived being an outlaw only to be murdered by people unknown. Ed was the only King to not being chosen by the Witan having been made co- regent by his half- brother at Emma’s insistence. Look also at failed takeover in ‘35, Alfred meets Godwin and ultimately dies whereas Edward has success but withdraws back to Normandy. ? What about Duke Roberts willingness to put Ed on the throne by force? Would you stick your neck out for your cousin? So many things seem strange when one talks about Ed the Con.

If you mean the cropmarks visible at around 35:40, I think that is the moated site where they later opened a few trenches.

Iam a descendant of the Plantagenets who married into the Courtenay family who are now the current Earl of Devon. All found with DNA so a lovely surprise. I am Australian by the way but plane to visit my motherland before I die!!

I heard the filming was quite expensive. It's not only the 6-7 professionals in front of the camera. There are a ton of helpers in the background that you never see and they want to get paid too.

Ah. So the name of the town on Long Island is from an English village after all. I went there (the one on Long Island) on a musical tour during college and many people who lived there did not know it was English. Maybe they thought it was another language?

I agree, I would honestly rather see a 4 hour video that documents a 3 week dig as opposed to a 45 mins video that covers only 3 days. The amount of definitive answers and relics/items that could be recovered would increase exponentially if that were the case.

@@rickjohnson5386 They all had work to do at their universities or archeology digs through the week. They gave up their weekends and took a friday off work probably part of their holiday allowance. It also was to help the local archeology groups have a good start and much better information to move forward with.

TT was never designed to be a full blown acrhilogical dig. Just test trenches, really. All the archaeologists had full time jobs, Tony was also busy making other TV during the TT erra.

this series, was maybe one of the best shows ever broadcast. today, we get politics directing what is allowed to be said.

Why do they only always have 3 days, if the site is worth the extra effort, why do they just give up with inconclusive results.

If definitive archaeological evidence is foound, the site becomes a site that can be taken over by the "crown" to be registered and worked.

To call people, who want to honor the memory of Edward the Confessor a cult, seems to imply negativity. I'm surprised to see experts looking at rare documents, not wearing face masks to prevent mouth spray, which could damage paper material over time.

I'm pretty sure experts in conservation and preservation of historical documents know what they're doing. Some of those documents could be parchment from animal skin as well, not just paper.

“Cult” is also a neutral word that means a group dedicated to the worship of a particular entity. All the saints had cults, all the Roman gods had cults, etc. That’s the sense they use it in here-there’s no intended implication that people who were devoted to Edward the Confessor were strange or walled off from the world.

A Confessor is not necessarily a monk or priest. It's a saint ( or Blessed) who was not a Holy Martyr or Holy Virgin. One whom confessed the True Catholic Faith in life and one whom every Christian could follow as an example of Sanctity. You would think that anyone doing a documentary on a Catholic Saint would at least get the basic facts correct about the Saint's title. Typical Laziness of Anglican heretics .....

Only thing I don't like about this program is the 3-day rushed job. Why three days? I don't like it. I don't think it requires this artificial conflation to be interesting.

At the time, the archaeologists had `regular jobs` in universities etc.They filmed on three day weekends. They took copious notes, and very often there were follow ups by other groups on the sites
