Retiring in Italy - We have a kitchen!
We finally have a kitchen! The poor guys who built it had to work through our heatwave. We have more tile work being done by our trusty and talented tile guy, Donato, who is also working in the heat. We are blessed to have Fabio managing the project since he understands these historic houses. Our belongings are also on their way from the US. After more than a year will we even remember our own things? #abruzzo #retireinitaly #italia #loretoaprutino #retiringabroad #kitchendesign #italianstyle

The old and the new in the kitchen works perfectly. I think everything in it is harmonious and gorgeous and friendly.

Thank you, that's so kind! Being in a very old house, in a country with different finishes and supplies, you choose things just hoping they work!
Hopefully the heat will moderate soon. Glad to hear that you're able, at least, to sleep in a cool room. The kitchen looks great!

Aww, thank you! We're very ready to stop living a nomadic life. We're ready to sit in a comfy chair and read a book!
Your kitchen is beautiful - I love the wood cabinets! It will all be worth it in the end.

Thank you! We hope it's worth it as it's been a very long road.
Beautiful kitchen for sure. You are right, the old and new together makes it look really good.

Thank you Eric! We're excited to do our own cooking again!
Greetings from San Diego, Eric & Sandra! I just came upon your videos and binged last night on them...ha! How wonderful your place is, and the ceilings turned out fabulous! I admire the tender care and love you are giving your house, especially respecting the history of its construction. True fiduciaries! Hope we can connect with both of you one of these days...our place is in Molise. Not to retirement yet, but just around the corner in a couple of years. Look forward to more of your videos!

Thank you! We actually moved here from San Francisco. We have had to make a few compromises but we've not torn down any walls, so the house is as original as possible. Unfortunately that means the renovations are SLOW. We looked at a few houses in Molise along our search. It would be great to connect!
I hope you have your house more or less in order for when your furniture arrives. How exciting that will be. I love the terracotta floors, they are so classy. You've certainly had to work terribly hard, and the jobs can seem never ending, ma piano piano tutto sarà sistemato. I hate this heat...we had 102,2° yesterday. Impossible to sleep without the fan blowing its head off all night. 🌬

Piano piano is our slogan! And we don't like the heat either. We lived most of our lives in a very hot area, so we're over it. We're very fortunate to have an air conditioner, which helps sleeping, and the summers are not nearly so long here as in the Southern US.
It's really looking great!!! I love your kitchen - some very clever touches there! If you've not already thought of it, set timers on the various a/cs, so they run for a few minutes in 1 room, then in another, etc. That's what I did in my NYC apt - kept things reasonably cool throughout.

That's a great idea! i don't think we can run more than 2 at a time because of the amount of power we receive.
I grew up in Loreto and now i live in London but i always come back to see my parents. The house is coming along very nicely!! congrats :)

@@ericgray6625 I'm so happy you guys like it. Loreto is a gem and most of people there are friendly and welcoming. Abruzzo as a whole is a region of very humble and hard working people. Keep the videos coming, we love them!! :)
Nice to see the progress, we haven't seen anything on our house in many months. We know August will be quiet...

We had about 3 silent weeks and suddenly activity. The kitchen was through a company so it wasn't dependent on Fabio. Being here full-time definitely helps. Hope yours gets moving soon!

@@ericgray6625 Love the kitchen, we are thinking of something similar, but our kitchen area is smaller. Hope the heat breaks soon... We might be there in late October or early November to visit our house...

@@paulclausen3988 we bought our kitchen from Orsolini and we were so happy with them. It's a bit pricier than Ikea or Mondo Convenienze but we're very happy with the quality. See you soon!
I think Americans (rather like us Aussies) do not understand the complexities of restoring something so old. I'm sure it would have been done a lot sooner had you taken the easy (and nasty) option of just slapping up plasterboard and imitation timber click clack flooring etc but you are revealing the true beauty of the house and restoring original features and while a great inconvenience to you truly worth the effort.

I agree. The Italians seem to enjoy the challenge of solving a difficult problem. In the US a contractor would just say, "no, can't do it". If you do find someone willing to restore something old, it would be outrageously expensive.

@@ericgray6625 Neither one of our countries would have anything like the age your building is! I guess that is why we seem to appreciate them so much.

@@katbar6066 we have a few rare buildings from the same time frame but the price would be crazy high.
Very nice! Is it costing a lot?

Thank you! It is far less than anything we could have gotten in the US.
