Absolutely! Why, why, why do so many designers waste this space! It is just so thoughtless. All that space does is collect that sticky, greasy dust! Yes, tall cabinets cost more. So don't buy so many tchotchkes and spend that money on tall upper cabinets! And I think saving money is why they go with "open shelving." What a nightmare. That trend isn't going to last. Who keeps their kitchen shelving neat and tidy and who wants to be wiping them down all the time?

Bed nooks are seriously underrated. Who wouldn't want to sleep in a cozy little cave like that? It feels so much safer and 'feng shui' compared to having a view of the front door from your bed. Also, I'd love to see Katie create a little window seat-reading nook thing in her big window by the kitchen, I think it would just be the cherry on the top!

Love what she said about small space living. As a family of four who are downsizing from a single family home to an apartment, it can feel like we're "doing it all wrong." There's this myth that owning a home is the be all and all, but Katie's right... It's not. Our family is so excited to be renters again, and to live a more minimal, intentional life together. Love this show! Given me so much hope that I will be able to create a home vibe wherever we land. Thank you for what you do!

Alexandra, this is next level. And while I feel like I say that to myself after I watch each makeover video, this particular one really stands out. Not only did you tick every box in apartment living (storage, privacy, separation of work life/personal space, loads of character, and style). You made 'function' beautiful. You filled every inch of that space with so much more storage that you managed to add livable space to that apartment. I might even rewatch this one, because it's that good. Jaw-dropping design, jam-packed with style & design, and I can feel your love for your friend all throughout the space. I too want a bed nook ("nook it!"). Also, a shout-out to your whole crew. I know yours is a collaborative team. I love how you work together, and everyone is super skilled in their areas of expertise. Mad respect to you all.

Totally agree. My husband and I have been renting for years and we have received flack over it from friends. But we don’t care -- we’re really happy with our choice. It gives us the flexibility to live anywhere we want. We don’t spend all of our time maintaining our home. We don’t have to worry about paying for repairs. We have been able to put away a ton of money in savings. AND we can make our space just as beautiful as we could have if we owned. These are all wins, as far as I’m concerned.

Just adding in that I have lived in my rental for over 10 years and I have not put any money into savings lol It's great if you are able to do that financially but it's never been the case for me. No shade just presenting an alternative because I feel I see this "I've saved so much" comment around small space renting and it's made me feel bad, until recently - again no tea no shade to anyone who has a big savings account! The house my parents (now just my mom) rent is in the perfect location and very spacious, they could simply not afford to buy a place like that in the same location so renting was the way to go :) personally I’d like to own a home in the future but if it never happens it’s ok too. The changes Katie made are functional and beautiful. I've never seen an interior designer go back and update a residence. This was a smart decision. My only thing is this factor: It is hard to change bedding on an enclosed bed. But considering how small this apartment is, she really did an amazing job.

  • @TubeTorte

If instead of that shelving a white curtain was hung on a ball bearing track it would have given the feeling of closing off the sleeping area yet allow making the bed so much easier. Less space for books, but the books are too close & visually busy to look at from the bed. Also, a fold down "island" would have taken up less space. Otherwise, the apartment is lovely! The colors are so soothing.

I could be wrong, but I didn't hear her say anything about wanting a TV? Possibly a projector and screen, that way, the screen could roll up - or down - and out of way. The projector can be placed on the side top shelf. As far as the projector being tied into internet, etc, I don't know all of that is done; I have seen this with tiny homes and converted vans/busses.
