Finally Some Progress on the House!

After several months of little activity on the house, several projects were finished this week. We just need to keep the progress going for the next 4 months. #loretoaprutino #abruzzo #lifeinitaly #italy #retireinitaly

    I got to say I’m really proud of you guys, I just subscribed to your channel and seeing all you videos. I’m from Calabria but live near Boston you took the big jump and moved to a beautiful country, I know how things work in southern Italy, really slow, piano piano as we say, after you get all your projects done you will enjoy La Dolce Vita…good luck

    Thank you, and yes, it's very different! Very little wood in the structure, and honestly we're not sure how these old buildings stand up! But they've been here for centuries so I guess they knew what they were doing.

    Love your updates. I've found you and been following you since we learned about the 7% flat tax offered to people with passive income. It's got us thinking more seriously about making a move to Italy. My husband has family in Borgo a Mozzano so we've been to Italy a number of times and absolutely love it. Planning another trip for a month this spring or early summer. The area you're in looks interesting because it's not too far to Roma plus it's not too far to the beach. My only concern is with earthquakes but I'm not sure if that's a big concern in your area or just over nearer L'Aquila? If you ever get to Lucca try to do it on the 3rd Sunday of a month and you'll find the most amazing antique market. It's huge and we spent hours there a few years ago....fascinating just wandering around that beautiful centro storico within the walled area looking at all the things.

    Thank you and thanks for suggesting Lucca! Antique shopping is not quite as good in our area, since historically Abruzzo was poorer and more agricultural. We chose Abruzzo because it is the furthest north of all the 7% regions. When we visited it we fell in love with the natural beauty and the people...and it's not quite as congested with tourists. As for earthquakes, all of Italy is bad, but the closer you are to the mountains in Abruzzo, the worse it gets. In general, it's not too much of a concern along the coast. We're in the hills, which is in the middle between the mountains and sea. Our town is pretty safe, but when the big one hit L'Aquila in 2009, even our town had some damage. We didn't look in L''Aquila since we had moved from California and had no desire to be in a risky earthquake area. Take care!

    Enjoying your videos very much and wanted to thank you for them. Thank you! Now a million questions, feel free to answer only a few. How do you get your personal things to your house, meaning do they deliver to your home when you have them shipped or do you have to go to a depot and pick things up and take them homed yourself. Shopping, I do a lot of online shopping have you tried that there? Like Target, Walmart, Costco/Sam's Club. Do they have big box stores? Do you have grocery stores, or is it a shop sells bread, a different shop sells meat, a different store, toiletries? I guess that is kind of a dumb question. I think I will go back and watch every video you have, then ask questions. I was thinking more in the county for me.

    Buon Anno Nuovo! I hope this year is better than the last one with its various incidents...covid and a broken ankle. I love your vaulted brick ceilings, but perhaps you need a brick and dust sealer. Brick dust can be harmful. The house is finally taking shape, and once the paintings etc. are on the wall it will really look like 'home sweet home'. 👍😊

    Thanks Maggie! Rosey (who is a boy....long story) spends most of his time outside his cage, but when we're opening doors, etc. he has to stay in. He's almost 21 years old, which is quite elderly for a cockatiel. Unfortunately, he's really slowing down, doesn't fly or talk much, and spends a lot of time sleeping. We know he won't be around forever, but you do get so attached to a bird.

    Thank you, and someday we'll do a video about long term stay. We're basically here on an elective residency visa, which is for retirees. We have to prove we can financially support ourselves and we can't earn any money here. Lithuania is really lovely! We've been there twice as our daughter has been there for almost 4 years. Their story of how they ended up in Lithuania is way more interesting! They live in Vilnius and we drove there for Christmas!

    So . . . Briefly, why did you leave America? And, are you comfortable walking down very narrow streets with crowded apartment buildings everywhere? And not having a beautiful yard where you can enjoy a Summer BBQ, and peace and quiet? I am Italian American who is fed up with the dramatic corruption of the government and all the crime in the USA - thinking about leaving. I believe I still have relatives in Florence.

  • @ericgray6625

    @ericgray6625

    Leaving the US was a big decision. We could retire younger with the cost of living in this area. We also were tired of political fighting and violence. We feel extremely safe and its actually very quiet here in our centro storico. This is the first time we've not had a yard and it's been great. It's one less thing to care for and we have tons of nature all around. The people are also far kinder here.
