RESTORING the 19th century JUNK / cabinet restoration
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
This cabinet was originally from the Kolga manor, Estonia. It´s style - neo-baroque, suggests that it is from the end of the 19th century. It´s condition shows that it has been la long time in the kitchen with lots of smoke and fume. In this video I will restore it.

Title: Restoring the 19th century junk / cabinet restoration
Пікірлер: 3 300
Beautiful restauration! The cabinet is from a period called „Gründerzeit“ and was most likely the top part of a bigger buffet cabinet. Love the piece of newspaper you showed… it‘s written in old German and informed of the marriage of the potter Reinhold and Maria on the October 3rd, 1875. Thank you for sharing.

@Nicole Stöber, is Old German in that particular print type/font difficult to read, for a native German speaker? Because it sure is to me😅. Eventhough I have no problem what so ever reading German in "normal" (modern) print. With this particular type setting many letters seem to resemble a ß / Eszett, to me.✌🏻

There are some excellent restorers on KZread, but I think this guy is the best I've seen. He retains the integrity of the pieces with his knowledge, patience, thoroughness and top skills, one of which is his superb wood carving ability. He also doesn't rely on pointless pets (as nice as pets are) hanging around to gain the gullible pet-loving viewers' empathy and 'likes'. I've just 'subscribed'.
You blow me away, not only the many skill sets you have from, wood worker, black smith, metal worker, carver, cleaner, painter etc. It is not just that you know how to do these jobs but you do with the knowledge and extreme skill of a true artist. If any one says that what you do is not an art. They do not know the true meaning of art.
Well, it looked almost unsalvageable. "Disgusting" was an understatement. Part of your craftsman-artisan skill is that you see what many of us don't. This beautiful piece shows many of your skills. I am so impressed with the beauty of the natural wood finish you recreated. An antique restored to its original' simple, everyday elegance. Thanks for sharing this beautiful work.

Me too! Seeing him plug those holes and even hand-carve the large sections of trim is just amazing.
That really was a mess. At least the newspaper stuck to the back, gave provenance as to its age. Just love watching how you carve out replacement pieces and when you shape parts, they always fit like jigsaw pieces - 08:38 and blend in flawlessly.
My goodness, had I not watched the video, I would have sworn this was a different cabinet. Amazing work and beautifully restored. I love seeing your skills, every video you excel at a different skill. This is lovely work and thank you for sharing your talent
You are a true artisan, it's a great joy to watch someone who reminds me of watching my father work on both wood and metal. Thank you
Instead of ·disgusting" I thought "beautiful" because I guessed the result. And it resulted to be really beautiful. I have the full set of 2 night tables and chest drawers in the same style and marble tops but I still have to finish restoring them. First I needed to undo a lousy restoration from the middle 1940. The furniture makers in 'the old times' had most of the tools you see in this video. Just not the electric ones. They had power tools that were either water, steam, or engine driven. A modern craftsman would be very challenged to keep up with an 1875 craftsman. They had all the chisels, saws, and a myriad of hand planes that performed very well.

@@georgepretnick4460 I don't think most woodworkers would have access to such things prior to the 20th century. I believe there was large industrial equipment powered by such things, but I figure it's more milling and other heavy duty trades, not fine woodworking. Do you have any sources you could link talking about it? I've been wanting to learn more about woodworking history and have had a hard time finding good places to research from.
@georgepretnick4460
Жыл бұрын
@@amandaduckett3093 yes, there was industrial level furniture, door, window and flooring manufacturing back to Roubo. Most wood working powered machinery was developed in the 19th century, it just wasn't electric powered. Most of them were powered by a belt drive coming off of a central drive shaft. That drive shaft was powered by, you guessed it, a large industrial engine, a steam engine, a water wheel, or even animal powered.

@@georgepretnick4460 Now that you mention it, I believe I have heard of such things before. That being said, most smaller businesses or shops probably were not fitted with such things, just like today many small shops don't have the newest and latest technology in the field. I worked in a cabinetry shop that didn't even have a CNC until 2020!
Restorations like this make me very happy. I love historical furniture, it ha such a unique charm, and knowing that it served people hundreds of years before me is just... Amazing. It's sad to see them rot away because they aren't trendy anymore, and most people won't bother with them. So it makes me really satisfied when I see one get restored to its original glory. Especially if the person doing it tries to stay true to the original piece instead of just making it into osmething else. Sometimes old wood cannot be salvaged and I really appreciate you taking the time to recreate the broken / rotted pieces as closely to the originals as you could. Amazing work. :)
