Restoration of a Rolex Datejust - A Million Years with No Service! It's Not Pretty Inside! This time I restore a Rolex Datejust manufactured by Rolex in the early 1970s that had not been serviced in decades. This absence of servicing shows up inside the watch in a dramatic fashion. As I work on this Rolex 1570 movement I uncover a few nasty surprises.
But Rolex watches are high quality machines and with some focused work I get this lovely old watch back up and running. By the end of the work it is beating strongly and accurately again! Nice!

The quality of how each step was filmed is unequalled, fantastic.. that and editing it all into a video must be the most time-consuming of the whole venture! I don't get the face and voice that don't match tho.
I'm always fascinated with the skill and knowledge of a watchmaker. The ability to disassemble, service and reassemble a complicated bit of machinery like a mechanical watch is something I will admire for my entire life.
Magnificent video. True clarity on each step. I have had the privlege of repairing several of the Rolex calibers. I truly enjoyed two original British Rolexs before the company relocated to Switzerland. In my day parts were readily available.. I have run into the same mainspring lubrication failure. The past state of the art lubricants don't compare to today's lubricants. I am a retired 3rd generation watchmaker who really appreciates the kind of work you do. I never could be a branded watchmaker. I always enjoyed my work on many types of timepieces. It has been rewarding as I'm sure it is for you. Best of Time
Brilliantly restored as ever, and really wonderfully shot. A joy to see this craftsmanship. Thank you Richard!
Love these old 36mm Rolex Datejusts. My first nice watch was similar to this one. Wore it every day to work for 22 years before moving on to other timepieces. Wish I could have that one back. Brilliant service. Thanks for sharing Richard.
im always so impressed by rolex movements.....no fancy decorations or complex and fine engravings by hand....so simple but so beautiful...i think no watch maker could do this....absoloutely magical...

Pilgrim. Also have a look at Nekkid Watchmaker. I am sure Richard would agree Nekkid also has amazing videos and is a Master Watchmaker like Richard. He is also very humorous and entertaining.
You're one of those angels that don't feel the need for a 5 minute intro! For that alone you get a like. And amazing work, keep it up.
If it ain’t my favorite bloke who restores my favorite watches.
You are the best
Absolutely perfect work. Amazing great video. This man lives for watches. Richard, you have magic hands.
Good job Richard as always never ceases to amaze me how gunk is on the inside especially since the crown isn't attached
As always, your videos are exceptional. I have a Rolex Datejust 1603 with a sigma dial and of course the 1570 movement. Every time I watch you do the 1570 repair/restore I get even more attached to my Datejust. It amazes me as to how much goes into the 1570 movement and that with good maintenance will keep running for ever. You legitimize the excellence of this watch and Rolex. It is no wonder the Datejust has been one of their most sought after watches for decades. Keep those videos coming. Take care and stay safe.
The yellow screwdriver trick got an immediate thumbs up 😃
Beautiful job Richard. What a pleasant way to spend 20 minutes with you.

Thanks for yet another great watch therapy video Richard.
So good to see you again. I love your videos. Great camera work and visuals of the components. I can't wait to see what you tackle next.
After seeing the amount of fillings I am surprised that there wasn't far more damage. Beautifully filmed and great entertainment as ever.
I love your videos. Thank you for sharing them Richard !

From 20:30 to 20:48 is *pure beauty.* Great work, wonderful to see a DJ with a 1570 engine, ready to go again for another decade before her next service.
Well done!
I really enjoy watching you bring those neglected/abused Rolexes back to life! I wish you lived in the Chicago area as it would be a joy to have you service my watches. All the best Richard!

Ditto for the Chicago area! I had an old but sentimental Omega serviced at Tourneau and they took a few months and a few thousands! It was in poor shape ...
wonderful! This Rolex is also happy 😉👍
I always like these vintage datejusts so intriguing!!!
Great work!!! Thank you for the video!!! Greetings from Switzerland
Nice. Thanks for showing this.
Teach us, master! 🙌

Your work is truly amazing
Wow, brilliant, Richard 😳. Thanks 👍.
I love this kind of restoration, very clear good job man
Beautiful!
Strangely therapeutic...as much craftsmanship involved in the Macro work as in the Rolex service, a fine artistic work.

Very perceptive of you Bob to realise that well over half the effort is in the filming. I can service a Rolex in about ten hours but making a film of this takes ten days!
Nice old watch! Cool video
Enjoyed your videos thoroughly. Thank you.
I can honesty say I have no patience to be a Watchmaker. This is a great video and I thank you so much.
your quality of work is exceptionally clean very professional I love it !!!

Hi Richard! Nice to see you again!! The same Qink I use in my fountain pens, lately I've bought a Waterman black ink bottle too but I've never used it yet! What a trick with the yellow screwdriver :-) ! The dial holder is gorgeous! Another great restoration! Thank you for your beautiful videos, I really wish they will be more frequent. Brilliant, Richard, brilliant, as ever! And so was your editing - I loved your dramatic musical intercessions and as usual, your military precision and sense of humour. Great restoration of a lovely Datejust as well; I have one of that vintage, which reminds me.....service? 😀

routine for you Richard but for the most of us it still is magic..thanks for sharing
Thank you so much for this video. Fixed mine.
Hard to believe just how much contamination can accumulate inside a watch. You did a superb, as usual, job. 👍
Very relaxing video for some reason - cheers !
Enjoyed that one - thanks
Amazing! at the end sound the world start to rotate again.
Your videos are outstanding, the edition, your work, everything is awesome. Many thanks Richard for another great video and for sharing with us.
Richard! nice one ! you’re a low key madman but so much care like a real spa treatment for that date just. I also appreciate the finger cots for disassembly - i’ve seen too many handling the dial w bare fingers !
Hermoso. Saludos desde Argentina!
As usual that was amazing! How did you ever get so much confidence to just dive into something so complex and delicate? So impressed with your work!! Where did all those filings and crude come from? Excellent work my friend. Was so excited to see a new video from you!!

I have a Rolex Datejust very similar i was wondering where all the dirt and crud came from myself .
@samiam619

@@juniorjohnson5961 Probably dried ancient lube.
@Chrisamic
2 жыл бұрын
The black stuff in the mainspring barrel was mostly dried lube. It looks like an excess was used. The filings seem to have come from the barrel also, you can see scoring inside the barrel as he disassembles it. An excess of grease is a problem as it gets thicker and collects dust, which turns it into a grinding paste. This has gone to next level due to neglect. Apart from the yoke spring I didn't see any other parts replaced, so the filings *must* have come from the barrel. If you see black soot all through the movement that is also usually dried barrel grease. Get your mechanical watches serviced regularly folks, otherwise you can put 100 years of wear on a watch in less than 10 years.
I have that same set of case back removal tools, same box. Your case back removing machine I need me a better one. Another great video Richard. I could watch these all day.
Brilliant video mate
I have the exact same watch, given to me by my father at college graduation. He purchased it in Bermuda in the 1960’s. Never been serviced, keeps perfect time, but it does need a Chrystal. Always worried about having it serviced since it works perfectly.
Absolutely LOVE Major Sea Wolf! What a stunning watch and also thank you for your service! And the Rolex is nice too!

Ciao Richard, thank you for your wonderful video!!!! Ciao Ciao...
Hi, I’ve only just found your You tube channel and find it absolutely fascinating. Your knowledge and skill is incredible and your enthusiasm catching. I’m working through all your earlier videos and enjoying all of them. I’ve just watched the video on the Suisse Chronographe, I have a similar watch, different maker and no date wheel but apparently the same movement. I’m also a near neighbour from Pembrokeshire, keep it up.
