Restoration & Knife Sheath: Vintage Puma White Hunter Leather Work ASMR
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
I recently acquired this vintage German-made Puma "White Hunter" knife in a trade. It was a little beat up, so I gave it a light restoration (I could have taken it to my grinder, but didn't want to lose the blade markings.) Then I made a new leather sheath for it. Any questions about what I'm doing in the video please ask in the comments section and I'll do my best to respond.
My laser is the xTool D1. This is a good budget-friendly machine for leathercraft.
Stamps I used on this sheath:
SOZO LX2 Geometrics Diamond Lined Pattern Stamp
Barry King - #2 Barker / Veiner Stamp
Although they didn't sponsor this video, below are the links to save my viewers a few bucks on purchasing the D1 direct from xTool (use code XTCUT80):

This was the first sheath knife I bought when I joined the British Army in 1974, I still own it to this day. .nothing special about the sheath it 😂was all about the knife when I saw it in the store in Scotland. Bought many others over the decades but this one was special to me.💂♂️🪖⛑️🏴🇨🇦

With all the fancy equipment I would also manufacture a sheath like the one the knife came with from the factory. 10623a0941.clvaw-cdnwnd.com/2622cbc427eb9eba0cb238c3b362f64b/200389289-5748457486/whfirst_02.jpg

Wow! I've had a Puma White Hunter since I was a kid, some 55 years ago! Your video has given me some good ideas on how to upgrade the sheath. The sheath is the original and is getting very brittle and quite dirty. I have used the knife in the field for a long time and the bone handle has a few chunks out of it. Thanks for the video!

Those are WUTA's positioning needles. You can buy them direct from their website or from Amazon. wutaleather.com/products/leather-suture-positioning-needle?_pos=1&_sid=0403c4af1&_ss=r&variant=40211687637125
That is just beautiful. You don't mind me askin where are you located I have the same knife and would like for someone to restore it for me.
Sick project. I've got a few questions: - In some of your other projects, you use an aussie conditioner while here you use resolene. What determines when you seal it and when you only condition it? - How is your experience with the wuta tools? they are pretty cheap on the website, but I'm a little skeptical about the quality - what are the pads you use for dying? Thanks
Another great design. Nice to get a peek at your pencil design process. What is the tool you're using to grab the saddle stitch needle? It looks like the jaws are smooth. Thank you.

Thanks for subscribing! This is the 20-watt version. The 10-watt should do everything you need it to do; it just takes more passes / slower speeds.

Another master class. Order of operation seemed very complex on this one. Not being a OTWB knife guy, what is the purpose of the grommet at the bottom of the sheath? Accommodation for a leg strap or neck lanyard?
@RoadAgentLeather
5 ай бұрын
Exactly. For a leg tie of some sort. Although I never use them. They're often incorporated into fixed blade sheaths.
I love watching your videos,you do awesome leather work Why do you case leather with saddle soap solution? .thanks in advance
@RoadAgentLeather
5 ай бұрын
Thanks! It's a technique I learned a long time ago. The soap helps lubricate the leather fibers. This makes for better stamp impressions. It also helps a swivel knife glide through the leather better (though I didn't use one in this video). It also slows the drying process some so you don't have to rewet as often.

If you can cut through a cigarette paper with no drag, then it's sharp. Keep on polishing the edge, and you'll get there. Nice job on the sheath and restoration, though.

Thanks! As you can see in the beginning, the blade was pretty beat up. I have no idea what someone in the past was hacking at (I'm guessing it was made in the 1950s by the markings). It was butter-knife dull. I was trying not to completely re-profile the edge by taking off too much.
I have that same Work Sharp tool. I'm still figuring out how much pressure to use when sharpening with the coarsest stone.
@RoadAgentLeather
5 ай бұрын
It's a great tool. For the price, it's hard to beat.
Do you dilute the dye that you have in that big jug, or is it pure? I have tried diluting mine (fiebings pro) with alcohol but i find it soaks into the leather too easily and is harder to control.
❤❤❤
Very nice once again. What settings do you use on your Xtools for cutting the leather?

Always a pleasure. Do you think the Resolene when airbrushing? What do you use to clean the airbrush after use? I only use mine for dye work and clean with alcohol. Would like to try some of the top coats with it. Why did you use it this time instead of a wipe on method?
@edgell3
5 ай бұрын
I also use Resolene through an airbrush. In fact I have a dedicated airbrush and bottle for the process. Resolene is a water based product. Dilute the Resolene 50/50 with water and adjust the airbrush pressure to produce a fine even mist. Apply two or more coats as desired, allow to dry between coats. Five to ten minutes should do. Clean with an 80/20 ratio of denatured alcohol with water. You may want to breakdown the airbrush and give it through cleaning as you feel necessary. Hope this helps.😎

Awesome job! But why did make the beltloop so long? Won't it dangle too low?
@RoadAgentLeather
4 ай бұрын
thanks! If you look carefully, there's a rivet dividing the belt loop into two parts. You can wear it low-slung, or move it up to ride higher.
I have one identical to that one, But mine says Carl Schlieper on the blade instead of Puma. But it's a great knife and holds an edge well... Cheers

What is the name of that star looking rivet you put in just above the grommet?
@RoadAgentLeather
3 ай бұрын
Hello! That is a tubular rivet. The star is referred to as the "splash". I purchase them from Tandy Leather. They're very strong and are handy for locations that would be difficult to sew in or use "standard" rivets. You need a setter to install them properly. There is an inexpensive hand setter, but it only works on the very shortest rivets. Otherwise, you need a press and a set of dies.

Question: at the 2:09 mark, you are using a u-shaped frame to hold Emory cloth, and shoe-shine style polish out the bolster. Do you know what the tool is called, or possible where to get one? That looks like a handy little tool for maneuvering around small oddly shaped parts. Beautiful work, as always.

Just wondering, how long you usually case after putting the piece in the bag?
@RoadAgentLeather
5 ай бұрын
Hey! A few hours seems to work on a piece this size.
Can you find out what kind of foam is applied with a brush and why put the workpiece in a plastic bag?
@RoadAgentLeather
5 ай бұрын
It's glycerin saddle soap. I use it for casing the leather. This preps it for tooling.
Would love to watch your videos with just your craftsmanship. There's always a 15-second or so bit of music stuck on repeat throughout.
I have a question, why do you put it in baggies after you soap it? I'm curious because I've never heard why and just wondering .
@RoadAgentLeather
5 ай бұрын
It's called "casing" and it preps the leather to accept tooling. You're trying hydrate the leather all the way through. Putting it in a bag, box, or simply covering it allows the moisture to fully penetrate before drying out.
@theColdFramer
5 ай бұрын
@@RoadAgentLeather now I understand the casing part but what role does the saddlesoap provide over and above even moisture from casing?
Does using the laser cutter cause the edges to be a bit crispy?
@RoadAgentLeather
5 ай бұрын
Like on the very edge where it's charred? Perhaps. But that black soot typically gets sanded off.
@maddawgnoll
5 ай бұрын
@@RoadAgentLeather I figured it did a bit, but didn't know how deep it goes. I've done some experimenting with a torch and seeing if I could get an edge to slick better, and it's a very fine line. But I also have used the same technique to create a harder surface on the edge of an axe pouch (logging style). I don't think it really made a better product, but it's still holding up.
Is it for sale ? As I would love to make an offer . Cheers Ray in Canada .

true. I'm a low-volume maker though. If I were mass-producing them, I would take much more consideration on plotting out where on the hide the cut was coming from and squeeze every inch from it.
