Replacing Whirlpool Washer Agitator Dogs--The EASY Way!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Originally recorded September 2, 2017.
This video shows how to replace the agitator dogs in a Whirlpool Direct Drive washer. These agitator dogs are a necessary part of the agitator, without them working correctly, the wash action won't be very good. The agitator dogs help the "corkscrew" part of the washer to push the articles to be washed down to the bottom where they can be properly agitated for the best soil removal. The other articles get pushed up, and the cycle repeats. If these agitator dogs aren't working correctly, you may find the washer isn't cleaning effectively.
Fortunately these are an inexpensive part, and most homeowners will have the simple tools needed to complete this repair.

AWESOME JOB! Thanks for this! I didn’t know that the entire agitator had to come out. I just pulled the top off and wondered why it was so loose fitting when I tried to put it all back together. Now I know! ❤

TY for your instructional video. The bolt was on there pretty good. Broke a sweat taking it off with ratchet so I got my electric impact wrench to get it off. Used ratchet and a little grease on bolt to facilitate removal next time. You saved me some $$$.

Thanks. You meet all types, even ones you never knew existed. It takes a lot to push my buttons, but push the wrong ones and watch out! I have several other videos on this same subject, you can feel free to search my channel for those. Those are also entertaining and informative. That's the best way, to have fun while you learn. Never happened that way in school, that's why we were all bored to tears. I try to correct the things I felt were wrong in my life growing up. I can't change the world, but perhaps I can get the ball rolling, enough people onboard that slowly a change will occur.

I only have two comments on your excellent video. First is thanks for the paper towel idea to hold the screw, beats the grease I've always used. Second is, you're mention of stuck units that won't come apart. I had that issue and solved it smartly by using a heat gun on low heat. I applied just enough heat to soften but not melt and pulled right apart. Thank you for the video.

For most of these machines, it's part number 80040, but you need to verify first. Other than that, there's a thousand different manufacturers of these, it's really a crapshoot as to the quality you're going to get.

Thanks very much for this. I've removed the agitator, and just need to order the dogs and put everything together. With smaller fingers (probably more tender) than yours, I couldn't remove the cover to access the bolt, being rewarded with nothing but sore fingers. I solved that problem with the free end of a rubber strap wrench, which I threaded through one of the two finger holes, then could pull up with a lot more force than my fingers would tolerate. I figured the rubber strap would distribute the load enough to not break the cap. After removing the agitator, I noticed the column that the agitator covers has a partial ring of something like rust near the base, where there appear to be a couple holes. Is that something to worry about? The machine is only 31.5 years old; I haven't checked the warranty. ;-)

My hands happen to be pretty large, it's lucky they could fit in there. My grandmother told me to marry a girl with small hands, I'm sure you can figure out why. Well OF COURSE it's so her hands can fit where mine can't! The strap wrench was a great idea. I'd clean up what you see there, and keep on truckin'. Chances are good your machine has another 31.5 years. I have 2 Whirlpool Direct Drive machines (this was a friend's). Mine are (at the time of this writing) 12 and 27 years old. I've put in 2 sets of agitator dogs.

Funny you mention that. A few time ago I was over at my dad's, he also had a smoke detector that was beeping. I had a handful of 9V batteries sitting going dead, and I don't have anything in this house that actually uses a 9V. I offered him some. Wouldn't you know it, it's a month later and he still hasn't put the battery in, and I gave it to him for free!

I agree. That's the parents' fault though, depending on the child's age. If the child hasn't started speaking yet (fluently, I mean, not "mama" and "dada"), then it is what it is. After that, with parents too enthralled with their phone and social media, not watching the kid, they deserve every bit of that they get. Of course it's a different world today, kids have "Child Protective Services" now; when I was a kid, it was old-school parenting so I was just beaten senseless.

  • @jaykay18

Typically, on large loads, there would be very poor washing action, where the items on top pretty much stay on top. Many had decided to do more smaller loads instead because they didn't know what the problem was or how much it would cost to fix. You can simply check the agitator by turning it in one direction and the other, it should lock as shown. Another indication you might have is noise from the cam/clutch assembly, some sort of grinding noise. Many people chose to ignore it or never even knew, so if you find a used machine today, it probably needs agitator dogs.

Apologies I had a very frustrating morning trying to fix my assembly. I had watched a number of videos that did not show me how to do it properly. This one was the only one that showed me how to put the assembly together correctly eventually everything clicked into place and it worked . Sorry again.

@@breengreg I understand how frustrating it can be. No need to flame everyone's videos though, it accomplishes nothing. There are better ways to dissipate frustration. One of the best ways is to simply walk away for a while, and come back later or the next day. I just had to do that with a project I was working on where at one point, everything started going wrong at the same time. The next day, I figured it all out, and finished the job in a half hour.
