This is what makes KZread great!! Nice detailed video.. good speaker, with well laid out instructions, while going through the repair… thank you!! I’ll be doing this repair once my dogs show up! Crazy to think all that motor stress is down to some plastic teeth to take the abuse… not good. But at least it’s repair friendly..other stuff is not,and it’s getting worse. Thanks again!!

very helpful. Thank you. I have an Estate Whirlpool that matches up exactly with this video. I already took the upper agitator out a month or so after my wife noticed that it didn't agitate. I didn't investigate far enough, so one month later, I'm back taking it apart again. Very simple fix. Thanks so much. Apologies were delivered to my wife. ;-)

Old video but fairly useful. There are a few things that bare mentioning: 0) Check the condition of both the Auger and the Agitator for cleanliness. If your washer is over 5 years old, you should scrub all the parts thoroughly. These parts collect crud, soap scum, lint, dirt, etc., etc. and should be made to look like new again. Soak the parts for an hour or so, or use a garden hose on them. None of the scum is caked on, so it's an easy clean. Keep in mind that if you have scum on your Agitator or Auger, you'll always have some scum on your washed clothes.. 1) The "dust cap" may be hard to remove. Just hook your fingers under the two upper tabs and pull up hard with a slight twisting motion if possible. 2) You don't need Appliance Grease on the Thrust Washer. Lithium grease works just as well. 3) Be sure to "seat" the Agitator firmly in place, allowing only about 1/2" clearance from the bottom of the Agitator to the base of the Drum. 4) Put some folded tissue between the 7/16th socket and the bolt to keep it in place when lowering it into the Cam. 5) Do not overtighten the bolt. Snug is good. 6) Shop around for the best deal on an Agitator Repair Kit. You'll quickly learn there's a vast difference in prices. Happy Washing!

Thanks alot, managed to change the agitator dogs within a few minutes. MAKE SURE to put the plastic piece that holds the little dogs in place on the right side. When I pulled out the agitator I screwed up and it got dissassembled. The plastic piece fits perfectly both ways on my model and i had it upside down.. thanks again!

Your videos are excellent....our agitator dogs were broken and like the idiot I am I went to Sears online for the parts, a tiny bag of 4 plastic cams were 9 dollars and they charged us 8 dollars for shipping ( .01 pounds)....after they arrived, I came here to learn how to replace them and saw your website address, you have the same part for less than 2 dollars. I will shop with you first next time, thanks for a great advice.

You can go to our site with your model number and look up the exploded parts diagram to see what your model is supposed to have and get an idea of where the parts go. I know some of those larger rubber washers were replaced with smaller ones, but you would have to look at the replacement one on the site to see its size. If you feel the parts are too loose then look again to see if anything is worn or damaged, we also have the repair forum where you can ask for repair help!

Thanks so much for this easy fix. I thought I had broken the machine this AM with putting a large comforter in it. Turns out it was only the dogs teeth worn down. My husband was about to take out the washer and take it to his "friend" in the business. YIKES! He needs to listen to me more often. :)

You probably did break the machine washing the comforter, Patty! And they're called agitator dogs, not dogs teeth. You need to listen to your husband.

I ran into an issue, my clothes mover was attached to the bottom agitator with a diff cam as the one shown. Not only was it difficult to remove the two parts, when I finally did, it busted my lock tabs right off the bottom agitator. It says in this video, to break the tabs of this type, but how about my tabs, does it matter? The tabs were fused to the cam with either glue, or irregular molded plastic. Now the clothes mover is a tad looser on the bottom part that it was.

My neighbor has a older style Maytag. I tried to spin the agitator but it wont spin freely either way, It wont agitate on the wash cycle, You can hear the motor running and it fills up and it drains good.. After it fills up the motor will engage but nothing moves. The thing that puzzles me is the fact that the agitator is so tight. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

  • @TechHeadsL7

And when I tightened the bolt, the washer for the bolt split in half, and one part is on the bold and the other just rolled off the top part of the bolt. Is the whole washer necessary? or can it function with the part already attached? My model is very different than this one, the Cam was located in the top of the clothes mover, and there were extra pieces I had to move back in. Just let me know.

I thought the dogs in my Whirlpool washer needed replaced but when I got in there, they looked okay. However, the retaining bearing was broken. It has a part # on it so I was able to buy the correct part to replace it. The retaining bearing for my washer has the flat ring but then, instead of having a solid "collar" like the one shown here, mine has 4 "feet" the point up parallel to the cam and should be tight against it. But the bearing is so dang tight that by the time I've squeezed it into place, the "feet" have been pushed so that their ends aren't flush with the cam anymore. This makes it impossible to get it to fit down where it belongs inside the agitator! I even tried putting the bearing down into place in the agitator (it goes into place very easily) hoping I could maneuver the cam into place, but it just won't go! It's just too freaking tight!! Any clues on what I can do to get it to go together correctly?

Model # LA5558XSNO. The bearing that was originally on it was 8055141 and that's what I got to replace it. A few years ago I had to replace the dogs and didn't have this problem, but the bearing didn't need replaced that time.
