    I love ‘em, but Kawi was naughty with these back in ‘08 and everyone should know. The ‘08 bike originally had two different Kawasaki part numbers for the same 5mm rubber wellnuts: One for the two visible wellnuts on the windscreen (92210-0498) and another for the dozen rubber wellnuts hidden inside the bike (92015-1757)… including two more for the windscreen the rider can’t normally see. Here’s the kicker: Despite having two different part numbers, they’re the exact same except that one had a bad formula that literally disintegrates for no reason. We know Kawasaki was aware of the issue since there was no good reason to specify two different otherwise-identical parts and, sure enough, they only use the bad ones where it won’t be discovered until service. Shame, shame, Kawasaki. They eventually updated the parts catalog to substitute the good windscreen rubber wellnuts for the rest. They later revised the catalog again along with the diagram to erase any reference to ever having two different wellnuts (same size, remember?). Thankfully, our public conversations survived their edits so they can’t sweep it under the rug that easy. ;) Maybe they produced so many they felt pressured to recoup their cost by using them where you won’t see but then they definitely should not have used them in the places that don’t get regular service (undertail, upper fairing stay, etc). They weren’t the only bad rubber parts from Kawasaki back then, so the bad formula probably was costing them a lot of money. One example is the KLR650 recall where the rubber turn signal stalks just rot right off within a year. Indeed, my rubber wellnuts didn’t last a year… but unlike your example it had absolutely nothing to do with being careful. Every single one of the 92015-1757 wellnuts that wasn’t already replaced during previous dealer service was rotten and splitting open, including ones that had not been touched since the factory (headlight, undertail, etc). Since the two exposed wellnuts with a different formula/part number were always fine, this was demonstrably not caused by weather or sunlight. Of course, I’m still on my original set of 92210-0498 on the exposed part of the windscreen. For the others I found that buying sets of anodized windscreen bolts at Cycle Gear was cheaper than ordering wellnuts online since you got several M5 wellnuts per pack. That was 12 years ago so prices have undoubtedly changed. After replacing all my windscreen bolts with anodized blue bolts and buying a second pack for more wellnuts, I used some of the extra blue bolts where the lower fairings meet the gas tank. Never would’ve wasted my money on them otherwise but they were affordable and I needed the wellnuts. :)
