Replace 2 Drive Belts On Troy-Bilt 30" Rear Engine Riding Mower [TB30]

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video I go over how to replace the 2 drive belts on your Troy Bilt/ Craftsman/ Murray/ TB30 and other models. The drive belts for my particular mower were:
Upper Belt: amzn.to/3oZPFJX (954-05040)
Lower Belt: amzn.to/3ConuaH (954-04331)
Keep in mind these part numbers fit my particular mower. The model number is located under the seat. You should check your model number and make sure you have the right part number for your mower.

    Do you know the purpose of the 3 fins on the main engine pulley? I changed the belts just like in your video using the belts listed in the description. The only problem I’m having is that the mower will not stop when I depress the brake fully, put in park. It will only stop if I put the shifter into neutral and must depress the brake and be in park.

    Do you mean the 3 fins that are built into the frame? Those aren't really fins, but are a belt guard. When you press the clutch in there's supposed to be slack in the belt and they keep the belt from coming off. I think I might have answered your other question about the belt being slightly short. One other thing, did you check and make sure that you have the right part number for your particular mower? The belt could be slightly different if you have a different year or model number. I go to www.partstree.com and use the model number from under the seat of the mower to get the parts breakdown for that particular unit. Then you can verify you have the right part number. The belts listed in the description are the for exact mower that I was working with in the video. Granted they should be pretty similar.

    @@JLPicard440 Thanks for the response and the tips. I did not check for the exact part numbers. I followed your advice and ordered the OEM belts. The belts you listed were correct for my mower and Amazon listed them as such. However, I measured them and they are not exactly to OEM specifications. No big deal, I’ll put them on this week. Thank your for you videos; they are very helpful.

    You're welcome! You certainly shouldn't have any trouble out of the OEM belts. I usually use aftermarket parts like that since they are much cheaper. I've not experienced problems by doing that, but I'll definitely keep it in mind for the future... Thanks for the update..

    @@JLPicard440 FYI, I installed the MTD belts and everything is running great. The problem was the lower belt measured a 1/2” too short. The upper belt was fine.

    If I leave the safety switch plug off will the machine start?

  • @JLPicard440

    @JLPicard440

    I don't think so. If the switch is normally open in it's resting position, then engaging the switch means it would be closed (just for example). Once that state changes the wiring will not let it start if it's different than what the resting state is... if that makes any sense.

    I ordered a belt and is came 35" instead of 35.25". Now how do I adjust the clutch ? It will not stop completely now since its a shorter belt.

  • @JLPicard440

    I'm surprised that 1/4" makes any difference at all only adds up to an 1/8" on each side... Is the v-groove part to big? Are you sure you're able to push the clutch all the way in? I don't think there's much of a way to adjust that without modifying something.. You might have to send the belt back and get an OEM one that's the exact right size.. (I'm assuming the one you have isn't OEM)

  • @eeepeeep5206

    The V part may be too big. I replaced it with this because everyone said 1/4 wont make a difference. So first thing I noticed was the clutch/brake does not come up to where it did before, like the belt is too short. Evertime I order the size 5/8 x 35.25 it comes as 5/8 x 35. So irritating. So now, when I want to stop I press the brake, but it almost stops but not quite, barely moves forward. Any ideas how I can prevent this without pulling that belt for the third time?

    Is the belt to short? Or routed wrong? If you turn off the engine with the mower on level ground does it come out of gear?

    I had this exact same problem. Drove it for a season like that. Second mow of this season and that hard to reach belt snapped. I think I may have switched them? Either that, or crappy belts from Amazon. Lesson learned.

    I have a craftsman r1000 it's basically the same as that TB mower. The issue I'm having is it will not shift and only goes slow. I looked at the shifter on the right side of the steering column and linkage. Still can't figure out why it will not shift to a higher speed. Can anyone help me, please?

  • @JLPicard440

    @JLPicard440

    Does the shifter move, but no change in speed? Sometimes that variable pulley will freeze up and the center won't move up and down like it should.. The variable pulley is in the back and has 3 disks and the center moves up and down. The 2 belts connect to it.

    Funny you got a video out now, last year i had to wing it myself, contortionist style.. and i have vertigo which makes it worse.. and yes i bent a tab or 2.. the belt was originally cut by a flying peice of metal i hit hiding in some leaves.

  • @JLPicard440

    @JLPicard440

    HI, I usually don't go by measurements, but the part number.. There's usually a sticker under the seat or hood that shows the model number. You can take that model number and go to a site like www.partstree.com and plug in the model number to get the parts breakdown. With that part number it'll give you length and width... Hope that helps.
