How to Install the Upgraded MTD Steering Rack Service Kit (753-11064B)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Step by Step!
In todays video we'll be installing the newly designed, upgraded MTD Steering Rack Service Kit on a Cub Cadet CC30 riding lawn mower.
Part Number for this kit: 753-11064B.
Steering makes a clicking noise? Steering wheel turns but the wheels don't? This kit will solve the issue, and may be covered under your riding lawn mowers factory warranty!
The issue is that the previously designed steering rack support (black plastic) gets worn out, which allows the steering rack to move away from the pinion gear. Due to this additional movement, the teeth on the pinion gear no longer make contact with the teeth on the steering rack. It is common for the operator to hear a clicking noise when turning the steering wheel, which will then put your steering wheel off-center when the wheels are facing forward.
Check for the model and serial number under the seat, and then call your local Troy-Bilt, Columbia, or Cub Cadet dealer. All of these models are manufactured by MTD, and this particular kit will work on all models mentioned in the video.
Note: This kit has been updated to include a stronger steering rack support (white plastic). Most photos of this kit are outdated, and show the old black plastic steering rack support. Make sure you confirm you're getting the latest version with the white plastic steering rack support!
Once again, if your riding lawn mower is still under the factory warranty, this repair will be covered by the manufacturer. If your riding lawn mower is past the warranty period, you may purchase this kit yourself, and simply follow the steps shown in this video to have your equipment back up and running again!

Great instructional video. I just replaced the steering kit on my CC-30H which had started acting up last year and was quickly deteriorating. The hardest part was removing the old cotter pins on the rear steering linkages. They were a little inaccessible and I had to loosen the yellow fender shrouds to get hold of them with the BIG pliers. Took me about two hours (and I took a break).

Dude, I love precision, and this was precision! You should lecture at Harvard. Precise, concise and to the point. No razzle-dazzle, just the facts, ma'am. This guy gets to the point, and take it from there to the finish line. Quick and clear.

Let me start off by saying this is one of the best instructional videos I have ever watched. Fantastic job and many thanks for posting this! I am not very mechanical but, after watching your video, I was confident I could do it myself. After buying the repair kit and my first torque wrench on Amazon and writing down the instructions you gave, I was able to complete the job in less than two hours. I am so proud and grateful for the guidance and tips in your video. If anyone else is like me and needs a step-by-step list of the instructions, I am posting the one I made from your video. How to Install the upgraded MTD Steering Rack Service Kit (753-11064B) 1. Remove top plastic piece. 2. Push spring-loaded button and pull up on steering wheel. 3. Remove Phillips screw holding top plastic piece. 4. Rotate top plastic cover counter-clockwise to free tabs and lift up. Rotate it to the side and out of the way. 5. Remove black pushpin retainers from front and back of steering column. - Raise top center pin just enough to get under the whole retainer, the larger round part. 6. Lift lower plastic piece and rotate it to the side out of the way. Use tape to hold it out of the way. 7. Clean the top of the deck and notice the 2 carriage bolts. This is where the 2 nylon lock nuts will go. 8. Align the steering wheel (with spring-loaded button engaged) with wheels. Mark the steering column, the steering column bushing, and the frame with a marker. 9. Raise front of mower. 10. Use a ½” socket to remove center Nylock nut from end of the steering shaft. Discard. 11. Use needle nose pliers to remove cotter pins on the rear steering linkages from the steering spindle. Steering linkages should be hanging freely. 12. Use 7/16” socket to remove Nylock nuts on both sides of the steering rack, holding carriage bolts from the top, if necessary. 13. Remove steering support, steering rack and steering linkages. 14. Remove one of the remaining carriage bolts hanging down from the top so that, later, the steering rack assembly can be attached by the remaining bolt & rotated into place. 15. Slide off the pinion gear. 16. Align the new plastic rack support in the new support bracket by laying it down, sliding sideways, then twisting up, where it should hold in place. 17. Grease the inside channel of the rack support and the angle of the rack and slide it into the rack support, as well as the teeth on the steering rack. 18. Remove linkages from old steering support. The left one is silver and the right one is gold, looking from open side with plastic support to the rear. Transfer one at a time to new housing. 19. Align center line on steering rack with the center hole on the housing. 20. For future maintenance: Apply a little anti-seize lubricant to spline shaft where pinion gear goes. 21. Slide pinion gear onto steering shaft. 22. Mount rack assembly (open end at front) at an angle, with the remaining carriage bolt and connecting the teeth of the rack onto the pinion gear and lightly threading the new lock nut. 23. Double check that the steering wheel is centered before attaching remaining bolt. 24. Install other carriage bolt from the top and thread lock nut onto it. 25. Make sure the rack is centered. 26. Slowly tighten both 7/16” lock nuts, then torque to 90 inch pounds. 27. Tighten larger ½ “ lock nut to 185 inch pounds, with someone holding the steering wheel. 28. Insert tie rod ends into the hole on the steering spindle and install new bow-tie cotter pins. 29. Insure drive shaft is aligned. 30. Reinstall lower plastic cover and lock in place with push pin retainers. 31. Install upper plastic collar and rotate clockwise to lock in place. 32. Re-install Phillips screw into front of upper plastic cover. 33. Re adjust steering wheel into position with spring-loaded button.

No grease fittings except on the wheels. I used spray lithium and lubed the steering shaft, the spindles (king pins) and the gear plate. Mine was ok, just hard to steer and squealing. Aired up the tires and now it steers great.

Secondly i must commend you on the thumbnail just a great idea including the 3 colours used on the different models that are sold you have a great thought process when putting together your videos. Third and most importantly even though most of your videos are well done with great audio and video angles with easy to follow instructions and explanation, personally i think this may be your best one yet. Everything looked so smooth i would think an 8 year old with tools could follow this video and get the job done. Fourth and final cannot wait to see the giveaway video and what you come up with. Hi I just replaced the rack and gear on my TB30 after watching some of the YT videos on this subject, I got the kit from amazon and it was okay, however a simple file test on the old OEM one and the new one showed that the amzn one is not hardened at all so I don't think it will last to long. The stock one lasted 6 years. I think next year after the season i am going to pull it apart again check the wear and also see if it is high carbon and can be heat treated, then I will go ahead and harden it and put it back. Yeah the one from MTD was $67. US so it was pretty expensive.

  • @EliminatorPerformance

    @EliminatorPerformance

    5 ай бұрын

If the OEM one cost $67 and lasted you 6 years then think of it like costing you $11 per year. Compared to the cheaper Amazon one, is spending the time tearing it apart to heat treat it and reinstall it really worth $11

I'm in Australia and I own a Rover Mini Rider Hydro, also made by MTD. Exact same rack, same issue. I've replaced 3x racks myself in the last 12 months, each time I called MTD they were out of racks and said there was no problem with the design. I had to order replacements from Amazon overseas and they'd last for about 3 months before they'd fail again. So glad they've finally released an upgrade! MTD Australia can't tell me when they're getting stock of the kits, but I've just replaced the rack AGAIN so to make it last until I can get the upgrade kit, I've put a zip tie above the rack in the black plastic guide to stop it from backing out (different to where your customer had theirs, behind & above the rack). See how she goes! Thanks for the vid.

*MTD has once again updated this service kit, please read the following* At the time of filming this video (Jan 2022) the 753-11064B was the latest upgrade kit (it was published Aug 9th 2021) with the white Teflon plastic piece. However, as of March 2022 (2 months after filming this video) MTD has now issued a new service kit # 753-11064C with black plastic being used once again. If you want the latest upgrade service kit, I would recommend you use 753-11064C. Start with evening out tire pressure to proper specs, I believe 14psi front and 10psi rear. Then you go and look at deck hanger linkage, see if anything is bent. One of my latest videos I posted 2 week ago shows a craftsman with this issue due to a bent rod

8:12 Great informational video. My mower is having steering issues now as well. Any tips on how you got access to the cotter pin here? You mentioned the tool you used. But, I can barely see where the cotter pin is, let alone reach it. I have yet to run into a video that actually showed this step. It is very frustrating to know what needs to be done, but not being able to access it. Thank you.

Cut it off if need be, you'll have to use side cutters and needle nose pliers. That's why they replace them with spring clips

@@EliminatorPerformance Thanks for the quick response. I guess I will have to go that route. I didn't get the kit yet as almost everyone only has the one with the black insert in stock. I was trying the alternate way of tightening the bracket first before getting the kit. So, I would need to get some clips separately first.

If you put the mower vertical that way are you draining the gas and oil first or is it sealed well enough that is not an issue?

Not an issue, let the mower sit for maybe 15 minutes before firing it up. This one didn't smoke at all.

Great video. Tons of confusion on proper kit item#. Cub website shows for 753-11064B shows a black rack support while 753-11064C shows a white one. the C part isn’t showing anywhere. My dealers said the black is current updated one and what will come in the 753-11064B they order for me. Who knows what I will actually get.

@@todddukeshier7169 all I know (from the service bulletin I read) is that the C part number is the latest at the moment. When you order online you can get anything, as vendors just cross reference. But when you order directly from the dealer, they *should* sell you the latest part, but the issue is they have old stock they need to clear out. My recommendation would be to order the C part number from a cub dealer and read the part number on the package when you get it!

As far as I can tell, the B was the update kit as of Aug 9th 2021 with the white Teflon plastic piece. When I run the number for the C it once again shows the black plastic. The 753-11064C looks like it's now the updated kit (with black plastic being used once again) and that was updated on March 14th 2022 cdn.datamanager.arinet.com/file/mtd/2ecc33cd-3fbd-4990-a5db-49e5da9edbb4
