Repair/Restoration: Dragon Data Dragon 32

Ойын-сауық

I've had this for around five years and until now, I'd never had the chance to dig it out and try it. So after a trip to my storage unit, I grabbed it with the full intention of doing a nice, simple and quick video. Well, guess how that turned out!
Parts delays, lack of recording area then a run-in with COVID delayed the completion of this for a month!

Thanks! Never having owned the Dragon 32, it was interesting seeing how well engineered it was compared to a lot of others of the era :)

Unfortunately as I said, I never owned one though a friemd did. I always thought it was better tha it was, but such is the way with memories... Still, the size and the keyboard were amazing compared to ZX Spectrum!

Thanks! Regardless of how bad it was as a 'gaming' machine for the early 80s, it's still an impressive looking machine and great for display. Just don't power it on and let people see the display quality... 😉

Interesting machine, never had one. That power cable looks worryingly like a 9-pin RS-232 . . . don't het them mixed up!!!

Yes, it does look like a generic off the shelf connector just adapted for the Dragon. Would certainly make a mess if connected to the wrong machine!

Nice work! It's really thoughtful of you to also list the components that you used for the refurb. I'm surprised to learn that the Dragon's graphics capabilities are inferior to that of the Speccy. Can you elaborate on this please?

Thanks! I try to list everything in case someone is looking to do their own. Just saves some time and effort is all! The Dragon had limited graphics modes unfortunately. It's default is 'black on green' text and it only supported quarter-tile block graphics. It did have five 'hi-res' modes, but they only alternated between monochrome and four colours is increasing resolutions per mode. The final mode, while supporting 256x192 was black and white only. There is a final mode but that was so impracticle to program in, most ignored it. It explains why Chucky Egg in the video was Yellow/Red and very garish while Jet Set Willy was monochrome. Hope that helps!

I would suggest trying some Dragon/Coco unique games... stuff like Donkey King, Back Track, Beanstalker, Balldozer, Lucifer's Kingdom, Mandragore, etc.

Nice video, dragon 32 was my 1st ever computer and the video really is piss poor, thats because the video circuit is a bastardised ntsc signal to *work* on pal tvs

Yeah, I'd read it was but still it just wasn't great at all. Might fire it on the RF just to compare as didn't do that at the time!

Apologies, I only use real hardware and not emulators. I'd probably recommend a good forum for that type of request tbh. I found a few user groups on Google: www.google.com/search?q=dragon+32+user+group and even a direct 'How to' for XRoar: www.myabandonware.com/howto/dragon-32-64

The potential of the Dragon, was beyone all other computers of the time, but the hardware was RUBBISH. The graphics could have done a LOT more if even just 8K had been set aside, and a little more creativity applied to the design.

I have to admit, the effort put into the physical design (shape, keyboard, internal board layout etc) was amazing and well thought out. It did appear that the system itself was an afterthough. It's a shame as I agree, a little more thought into it could've made it so much more!
