Mini Byte: How to Nickel Plate for Retro Restorations!

Ойын-сауық

I've been working on this Salvage C64C and yes, it was in very poor condition inside and out. The steel keyboard standoffs and the RF modulator casing were particularly bad so I was really only left with a few options. Replace, clean and paint or zinc/nickel plating.
I wanted the finish to be close to original so as you can guess, I've opted for nickel plating so sit back, relax and enjoy the over powering smell of vinegar...
You will be using Hydrocloric Acid as part of this process if you decide to try this yourself. THIS IS HIGHLY CORROSIVE and should ONLY be used with care! Wear protective gloves and eyewear when handling ANY hazardous chemicals and ideally, use in a well ventilated environment!
There are plenty of companies out there that can offer plating services should you prefer and I take no responsibility should you accidentally hurt yourself!

The end result is great!!!! The Nickel really makes it shine! It will oxidise over time (as does Zinc)! I found it painfully time consuming doing that MVS 4 slot shell - on something so large it just took forever... As per my Discord comment - be careful to avoid stainless steel (aligator clips are made of that) or you get Chromium released - and always check what gases might be produced too.

Thanks Gadget! As someone I loom up to, for me that is high praise :-) Yes, making sure the crock clips arent touching the fluid is a major point and agree that you need to be careful of the gasses. In such a small jar with my front and back windows open, it was more the overpowering smell of vinegar that was the issue! Will need to try a much larger part at some point as I believe you will either need a huge thin, verticle tub with long nickel electrodes for best results or use a standard large tub and get the ends coated well and the center almost not at all...

Wow, thanks for introducing me to this, I hadn't seen this used before to restore metal parts on old machines: it's the new retrobrighting! I think that Commodore RF mod top cover looked amazing, defo worth it, would love to see it back on the board.

Same here! I just thought, how can I salvage these and went for it 😉 I'll be honest and say I didnt spent too long polishing the top cover and recon I couldve got it much shinier if Id tried. However that would take it way past the authentic, original look and why I didnt polish the rest as much. As for seeing it back on the C64C, editing the video now for (hopefully) posting this week!

There are so many possibilities! Most steel parts are coated so theres no reason not to try and salvage them. Results will vary dependi g o starti g condition but why not try 😀

12:08 the solution to even plating from all sides is to have not one but at least 3 positive electrodes around the container.

Yeah, definitely. I ended up with two but I think a larger container with more is the way to go. However for the small scale I did, I still am amazed at the results :-)

the coppers also better conducting into the solution. it's possible to put heatshrink tubing on it to avoid it conducting from there (not all the way of it obv it needs to conduct to the part) or really any tubing will increase the distance from the copper hanger even if the solution can get into the tubing nice results!

Many thanks! Its much easier than I expected and the results are really astounding. I have to re emphasise that the parts to be cleaned have to be super clean as I found out!

I agree its not for everyone and also depe ds just how picky you want to be with a restoration. Cleani g and silver paint would be adequate in a lot of situations where the parts are hidden or not easily seen for e ample.

That turned out really well, I don't ever think that I've seen a retro channel cover this before. I've got an Atari 7800 with very shabby shielding that could use this (I'd probably need to setup a bathtub of solution to fit it in though). Excellent information nonetheless, bookmarked. I'm sure that It'll come in handy in the future ;)

Glad you liked the video! Using a larger storzge tub should be fine, though you may need a larger container to pour it into if you want to seal it up for later use. Or many smaller ones!

For me, you're the first person from the retro scene I've seen do something like this. Great idea! Neatly executed :) Would it make sense to rinse in a new container with distilled water after the hydrochloric acid? I don't want to catch the "dirt" from the first rinse again. ❤

Thanks :) I just wanted to try and salvage as much as possible, while keeping it looking good and as original as possible! I thought as it's really only diluting the acid to rinse it away, I decided against it. The parts still came out very well I think, though can try different methods of rinse in my own time and if I get any different results, I can do a follow up video.
