Repair/Restoration: Thomson MO5 Platini Edition

A few years back while trawling through a French Gumtree type website, I was lucky enough to come across an advert where serveral different machines were being sold. After messaging the seller, I bought this and a few others and arranged a family friend to collect them. This is a Limited Edition version of the standard Thomson MO5 which was released to coincide with Michel Platini becoming the president of the Thomson Micro-Computer Club.

I'm quite surprised they never tried to sell the MO5 over here. It's quite a capable machine, and Thomson were quite close to Thorn in the UK - I think that, in 1984 quite a few customers would have been attracted to the Ferguson name on a computer, they had a good general reputation and very good retail network. Opportunity missed, although 1984 might just have been a bit late in the day.

I have a few of the generic MO5s and they all have the 'dead flesh' type keyboard common on the ZX Spectrum, so this was quite a surprise when the keyboard turned out to have real keys! As you say, 1984 may have been late, though they brought out a few more peripherals for it. I have yet to test the 64K memory expansion for example! As you say though, possibly an oportunity missed as it indeed could've sold well here.

Thanks :) It's an odd one and the stock MO5 has 'dead flesh' keys like the ZX Spectrum, so this was a little different!
You can press both CNT+C to exit the basic program properly: CNT+C=BREAK (CTRL-C) (The white INI PROG button is just the reset button). I also think that the keyboard can be retr0bright'ed. (Though you may lack UVs from the sun in Scotland ;) )

Thanks! I'll give that a go shortly as I think this system is seriously under-rated and I have a whole bunch of tapes to test out :) I am currently trying to sunbright the keys, though as you say, Scotland lacks a good supply of UV rays :D
