    It's not that uncommon if a higher degree black belt is not available and at that level (not many red belts are around). Renzo was chosen to present the belt on behalf of Gracie Barra. Remember Renzo is not promoting him just presenting.

    I trained with Mater Monsur. He was one of only 5 red belts at the time. He was a great story teller as well he was a cop in Brazil. Had bullet scars on his body. I never got to roll with him, only his out of shape, black belt son. I was about 22 at the time and in really good shape and the chubby, balding mater's son handled me like I was fkn toddler. I've been traing 14 years now. I'm still not a black belt, can't imagine what it takes to get a red.

    Renzo wasn’t promoting Carlos to his seventh degree, but was simply awarding him the belt on behalf of the Gracie Barra organization. You know the group he founded and leads. So technically he promoted himself, but had Renzo had him the belt. Seeing how Rickson at 8th degree was the highest ranking person at that ceremony you'd think why not have him give Carlos the belt? But Renzo being one of the original GB guys and his nephew, I can understand why he was chosen for the honor.

    There’s a reason why BJ Penn was nicknamed “The Prodigy” by Ralph Gracie, the Camarillos, Kurt Osiander, & others at Ralph’s school. He got his black belt in three-and-a-half years because he’s that damn good! BJ was beating guys with much more experience than him & won his division at the worlds less than a month after getting his black belt. Not too many guys can say that. BJ is not the only person to have gotten his belt in less than 4 years; Felicia Oh, Stephan Hall, Mike Fowler have also.

    @carlsongracieteam After reading your comment about Rorion getting his red belt too soon, I realized that they did the same speedy promotions with Ryron and Rener. Both of them received their black belts in 2002 and by around 2007, they were both up to 5th and 4th degree (their present ranks). They're almost the same rank as their uncles and older cousins. Ralek’s promotions on the other hand are much slower. He got his black belt in 2007 and just barely got his first stripe this year.

    @carlsongracieteam Your right for the most part, except that neither Rickson, Royce, or Carlos Gracie, Jr. are 9th degree red belts. Rickson is an 8th degree red and black belt, and both Royce and Carlos are 7th degree red and black belts. Also generally yes you do have to be at least 67 to get your 9th dan red belt, however, Rorion is only 58 and has been a 9th dan for several years. The IBJJF may not recognize his rank, but he did get it from Helio, who IMHO was the highest authority on rank.

    I'm curious about something and hopefully those of you affiliated with Gracie Barra can help. Carlos Jr has 2 older brothers who are 8th dans and and 3 (living) older brothers who are 9th dans. One of those 9th dans is Carlos Robson Gracie, Renzo's father and technically (with the passing of Carlson Sr. RIP) the patriarch of their side of the family. How come none of them got to present Carlos with his 7th dan? Is there a rift between them? Will he not except rankings from them? Anybody know?

He recently did an interview, where he said that now that Helio is gone, he will never accept another promotion above 7th dan. Royce doesn’t even wear his black belt or stripes anymore, he now wears a midnight blue belt in honor of Helio. Recently he did a seminar at the Gracie Academy and was wearing the midnight blue belt. Cool show of respect and love for his dad.

    This is something I never realized before until watching this video. Renzo says that he received his black belt from Carlos Jr. even though Renzo's own father Robson is a much more very high ranking black belt himself (9th dan). Why did Renzo get his black belt from his uncle instead of his father? Did any of Robson's other sons receive their bb from other family members other than him?

    @vboytan Carlos is a 7th degree and Renzo is a 6th degree. I believe at that time Renzo was still a 5th degree and was promoted to 6th a few months later. Also if I'm correct Renzo's older brother Charles should be getting his 7th degree sometime this year. He's been a 6th degree for about 7 or 8 years now, so he should be eligible to receive it now.

Escolha do Mestre?

    @em729 Renzo is “presenting” the belt to Carlos on behalf of Gracie Barra, CBJJ, & the IBJJF (all founded and run by Carlos) and not actually “awarding” it to him. He’s done a lot for BJJ and has trained since the 1960’s and definitely deserves the rank. Funny thing is, that all of Carlos' older brothers are higher ranked, including Carlos Robson (Renzo's dad) & Reyson, who are both 9th dans, & of course his uncle Helio at 10th dan, yet he promoted himself instead of receiving rank from them.

  • @barrettokarate
    @barrettokarate12 жыл бұрын

    Helio didn't like the IBJJF & its rules concerning competition & rank promotion. For instance, the IBJJF states that the minimum age for 9th dan red belt is 67. Helio promoted Rorion to red belt when he was only 51, as an F.U. to the IBJJF, but mostly because he was already in his 90s & wanted to promote his oldest to red before he passed. Ryron & Rener were asked about their ranks once, & they said that Helio gave those ranks to them, and who were they to argue with whatever rank he gave them.

  • @barrettokarate
    @barrettokarate13 жыл бұрын

    @carlsongracieteam I would love to know what the other members of the Gracie family really think of Rorion, Ryron, and Rener's promotions. Unfortunately even with some of their personal quarrels, I doubt that most if any of them would speak on the matter. I think that the only one who would say anything if he was still alive would the late great Carlson Gracie. In all the interviews of him I've read, he seemed to always tell it like it is.
