Removing & Loading the Scout | The Mortells

In this video we walk through the process of removing the Scout from the truck bed and later loading it back up. While we had the Scout off, we went offroading with some friends and also did a deep clean of the Scout.

    Thanks guys. That was great. You nailed the reload. I usually have to take a couple of readjustments

    Thank you!! I think we readjusted once but it might not have made it in the video haha. It can be tricky to get it lined up just right.

    Was looking at nucamp 620 but my half ton only has 1850 capacity so now I'm leaning towards Scout, weight shouldn't be a problem, and we have Dickinson in our cargo trailer conversion and love it.

    Make sure you check on installation for your Newport P9000 into the Scout. Pick mine up in Yakima (have Newport P9000). Still need to secure additional backplate & ceiling plate. Chasing the 2 pieces has been an adventure. The staff is great, however limited information in securing these pieces. PS: make sure your Yeti is fully charged.

    I just got my Scout Olympic. Thanks for all your videos. I wish I could do the drawers underneath like you guys, but I am not that handy. But I did put some insulation on the floor based on your video about the floor being cold. I put 1 inch insulation covered with aluminum insulation. and I am going to put some gym mat flooring as well to make soft. I see you keep your camper on the truck all the time. I have a Silverado 1500. Do you think it would be ok for me to keep the camper on the truck the whole winter since that is the season when I will use it in NJ/VT for snowboarding.

    Congrats on the Olympic! We leave our camper on our truck all of the time and haven't had any issues. Another tip for keeping the floor warmer is a small fan to help push some of the hot air down to the floor!

    Thanks for a great vid! Question: could the service on the truck been done without having to had removed the Scout? I'm just wondering if you had not been able to remove it, if that would have effected the ability for certain garages to work, ie, maybe garage height too high for some garages with the camper on? Happy trails!

  • @TheMortells

    Thanks! The garage we went to requested that we take it off. I think it would definitely just depend on where you're taking it. I'd make sure to call ahead if you want to try leaving it on.

    Great video! Do the rachets hook up to the corner loops in the truck bed? I wonder if they are rated for this application. Thoughts?

  • @TheMortells

    @TheMortells

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the comment! Yes - the ratchets go directly to the corner loops in the bed. I tried looking into what they are rated for in our truck but wasn't able to find any specs. We closely monitored them during the first year and they showed no signs of bending/failure so we feel pretty confident it will hold up over time!

    Are those Kobalt Sawhorses just a Lowes purchase? What weight capacity options are there? Thanks...I saw this (as I have a truck camper as well) and thought it was an excellent idea for when I have my camper off my truck and in storage for better stability.

  • @TheMortells

    @TheMortells

    Yup, we got them from Lowes and they are 1100lbs capacity with adjustable height. They have other capacity options too if you check them out on lowes.com. We also had the camper secured with the happijacks on each corner and just added the sawhorses for extra support!

    What was the plug you pulled out before unloading it? Is it part of the charging system?

  • @TheMortells

    @TheMortells

    It's the 7 pin cable that runs from the scout to the trailer connector that runs the running lights on the scout. It can also charge our goal zero when driving.

    After the “re-loading” did you slide it forward so you can close the tailgate? I have the same truck, wondering if you can close the tailgate.

  • @TheMortells

    @TheMortells

    2 жыл бұрын

    Unfortunately with the Olympic and the RAM standard bed size you can't close the tailgate, the camper is roughly 1" too long for that. We did build a bracket to hold the tailgate close 90% of the way though and it worked out pretty well.

    You mentioned a mat that was replaced under the Scout. What did you switch from and to and what was your reasoning for the change?

  • @TheMortells

    @TheMortells

    2 жыл бұрын

    We switched from a cheap rubber mat that we got from a hardware store to a 3/4" horse stall mat from tractor supply. The main reason for the switch was the cheap rubber mat that we got was pretty slick where the horse stall mat has more grip.

    Would you say the scout camper works out better than a small travel trailer?

  • @TheMortells

    @TheMortells

    2 жыл бұрын

    It's hard for us to say because we've never used a travel trailer. We like being contained to one vehicle and not having to worry about towing something, and we love that we don't have to set anything up when we get to camp.

    Is removing ur camper required for truck servicing? Won’t fit in the bay? Or being extra cautious?

  • @TheMortells

    @TheMortells

    Жыл бұрын

    Nowadays we just make sure to find a place that can service it with it on. We took it off this time to just get some experience with removing it and putting it back. But we've been able to manage getting service just fine with it on! We just have to call around to different places to make sure we'll fit.
