Scout Interior Remodel, Power Upgrade & More
This video contains a smorgasbord of updates that we've recently made to the rig including a complete interior custom build-out in the Scout, major power system upgrade, and AC installation.
The purpose of the video is to show you some of the major changes we've completed on the rig. It doesn't include all of the changes in detail and this isn't a "how-to" video, nor a complete "how-we-did-it" video. However, it will give you some good ideas and insight on how you can customize a Scout camper!
Before & after shots begin at 5:26.

The folks who designed our complete electrical system using two wrecked Tesla S batteries. They teach classes at Overland Expo (www.overlandexpo.com) on how they did this for their converted ambulance. We enjoyed working with them and highly recommend their ingenious power designs. Mad respect to this level of handiness! It’s always been my dream to own a pickup camper and yesterday I just made my first step - buying a pickup truck!

@@hurt1704 I got a Ford F-150 with 6.5 ft bed and 2150 lbs payload. Will go with Scout Kenai as well.
Love these upgrades, jealous of that AC unit, well done!

I live in the valley of the sun aka AZ, so an A/C unit is definitely needed. Love what you did. Thanks for sharing! Love the before and after.

Hahaha, Mike may or may not have suggested heated floors...
That looks really good! You guys…and your expert helpers, should be proud of your work! Did you add more solar panels to the roof? I’d love to hear more about your AC and how it worked for you in a later video. We added a rooftop unit to our build but yours looks much more compact.
@TheMortells
2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes we added a total of 600w of solar panels on the roof (three 200w rigid panels). The AC has been working great but definitely requires a large battery bank. I think you could get away with 600amp hrs of battery but we are thankful to have over 900amp hrs worth of capacity.
Súper cool 😎🤙🏾

The steps we were using in this video were the little giant steps that we modified to mount to the truck bed. We have since switched to Torklift Glosteps and love them!
Definitely would like some more information on the AC and how its working?

So far the A/C has been working great (though we have only had to use it 10-15 days this year since we spent a big chunk of time in Alaska). We will be heading south soon to warmer weather and can put together a video after a couple weeks of heavy use.
Just started watching your vids today. My wife and I are thinking about buying this. Do you guys have an Italian spin one too! Awesome vids

Thanks Tony! Granger is actually a Wirehaired Pointing Griffin but is pretty similar to the Italian Spinone! They are great dogs!
Beautiful remodel! ❤ where did you put the toilet/shower for you guys?
@TheMortells
4 ай бұрын
Thank you! We never used the shower so we got rid of it. For a toilet we use a collapsible toilet seat and wag bags if needed.
Looks great! Do you know approximately how much weight was added with your enhancements?
@TheMortells
2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Unfortunately we don't have an extra weight increase but a ball park is roughly 800-900lbs with all of the electrical, AC, and wood work that we added.
Amazing mods!! So, do the Tesla batteries work well in cold temps as opposed to the Yeti Zero? Also would love to hear what your solution is for bathroom. Looking to buy a Kenai in the next 3 months
@TheMortells
Жыл бұрын
Yep, since we live in the camper full time we haven't had any issues with the batteries getting to cold to charge/use. If we left the camper unattended in the cold with no heat then our battery system would disconnect once our battery temps got under 32 degrees. We do have some small heater pads on either side of the batteries that we can turned on if needed. We do have a foldable toilet seat and wag bags that we use when needed. Otherwise we typically find public restrooms if needed.
Hey, thanks for sharing the build. I looked up a couple Scout camper touring videos and it seems that the cabinets that come with the camper are quite well made. Would you mind me asking why you decided to make your own? Simply due to the lack of drawers or you want to rearrange the space? Thanks in advance!
@TheMortells
Жыл бұрын
Hey Eko, we think the Scout layout is great for short term trips (1-3 weeks) but for full time life we wanted to install drawers and customize the space to fit our needs.
Can you share the brand/model of the aluminum ladder/stair step attached to your truck bed?
@TheMortells
10 ай бұрын
Hey Rob - that was a lil giant 3 step stool. We customized it to fit onto a metal bracket. We have since gotten rid of that setup and went with the TorkLift GlowSteps.
Where did you buy the FRESCO 9000MAXX from? I can’t find a vendor online.

We purchased it from a dealer in Canada called JJK Enterprises. But yes it was tough to find!
Wondering if you weighed before / after?
@TheMortells
Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately we didn't get a good before/after weight comparison.
Wow - very cool. But I can't help think you've changed the idea of the camper from functional/modular to a fuller-featured, fully built camper like a Cirrus or Lance. OTOH your interior is more customized than either of those brands offer. Regardless, the camper looks great - enjoy your travels!
@TheMortells
2 жыл бұрын
Thanks and yep, our set up is no longer the lightweight and simple design that Scouts are known for but overall we like our layout more than other brands and are happy with how things turned out 👍🏻
I've always wondered about the scouts open face storage. Really seemed rather pointless and pretty m8ch confirmed by you two. Really like the camper but a interior redesign and power upgrade makes me think about getting one these unfortunately.
@TheMortells
Жыл бұрын
We really liked the open faced storage when we were only using the camper on weekends, but once we started taking longer trips and then moved into it full time then it wasn't as great of a set up as drawers.
Tesla batteries if overcharged will catch on fire and burn an RV to the ground. Hope they work out in the long run for you guys... but, with zero warranty and high risk, Tesla batteries are not a good choice. Love your videos, keep posting.
@TheMortells
Жыл бұрын
Yep we don't have any warranty and there is more risk but we feel comfortable and happy with our decision to go with the Tesla batteries. Our design as plenty of safeguards to ensure that the batteries won''t get too hot or over charged and they have been working perfectly for over a year now.
Wow. That was a lot of work. I wonder if it would have been better to choose a different camper. So, would you guys buy the same camper after completing all those mods?

It was a lot of work and honestly it had crossed my mind if we should have went with a shell model and built it out to our liking. But the benefit of the route we went is that we weren't forced to make any modifications right away and we could live in it while figuring out what we need to change to work for us. We also think Scouts are one of the best looking campers on the market!
What kind of dog is that??

Thanks glad you liked them!
Scout Camper have the worse costumer service. They advertise this as a 4 season camper and it's not. Collects so much condensation on the edges. Air filters through the door, and window on the door is not double pane and collects so much moisture in the winter. I had a 15k camper made by Travel lite that performed SO MUCH BETTER. BIG BIG BIG REGRET buying this crap for this much money. The propane heater SUCKS, the bottom part of the unit stays SUPER COLD. I am going to have to install a secondary heater to heat up the bottom part of the camper. Don't waste your money, for 1/5 or a 1/3 of the money you can do much better if you want to use it in the winter time without so many issues.

I'm sorry to hear you've had such a frustrating experience with your Scout. Generally though, I think most Scout owners feel that Scout's customer service has been fantastic. We're active in the Scout Owners facebook group, and though problems arise sometimes, people tend to feel like Scout does thier best to make things right. But again, I'm sorry if you've had a different experience. Regarding winter camping: We have camped in our Scouts down to 4 degrees and been plenty comfortable with the Newport heater. The trick for heating the lower part of the camper is adding a fan either 12v or battery powered to help push heat down to the floor. We have two 12v fans and using them helps evenly heat the camper. And regarding condensation: If you properly address condensation you can eliminate most of it. As long as the weather doesn't get below 15 degrees at night we typically don't have any condensation when we wake up. We always keep a window cracked and the vent fan on to help cycle new air into the camper then we adjust the Newport heater depending on the temperature. I hope these tips will be helpful for you!
So much work and still no where comfortable to sit.
