Thank you for showing this. I've been riding dirt bikes since I was a kid and I love the vintage bikes so I've started buying them and want to restore these bikes. 1977 Kawasaki ke250, 1977 Harley Davidson SX250 and a 1968 Bultaco Pursang 250. They're a barn find, all 3 from the original owner, they belonged to him and his brother. Original titles and each bike is complete. Getting them running didn't take very long, about a months time. They're beautiful bikes after removing 35 years of grime collected just sitting there. The purple power and mean green work great with elbow grease which you're obviously familiar with. I was concerned I would have to search the internet for months to replace rims. Thank goodness that's not the case. Im going to purchase this product and break out a jar of elbow grease. Thanks for sharing!

Dude! Tyvm from the bottom of this old ladies heart. I got hurt at work in 2007 and needed numerous spinal surgeries. Couldn't work thus ended up loosing everything and having to depend on Social Security Disability. The one thing I wouldn't give up was my car. Mind you; I couldn't walk. I'd look at her out the window and remember the wind in my hair and dream about taking my grandkids for a ride. I watched her fade and rust 😢 Fast forward to 2015. I wake up and I can't get up. I was stuck in my body in my bed... I have my neck fused at 4 levels. I woke and had full sensation! The fight was on! I was 50 and had a mission! Get up and walk. Drive a car for the 1st time in almost a decade. It has been a lot of work but so worth it. So... I'm doing a restoration on my '73 Caprice Classic convertible. Obviously my funds are extremely limited. This was so easy and satisfying and didn't even have to buy anything.

This is incredible. No words.

Steel wool and any lubricant would do...BUT...prior hitting it, start by cleaning with water soap and a soft cloth. All stuff you can wash out before is not going to scratch the remaining chrome...

Excellent - thanks! You mentioned getting the wire wheel on them.. I'm at the point where steel wool has stopped being effective and I'm weighing up getting more aggressive. Any tips for the spots that don't come out in the wire wool phase?

Be really careful with wheels. Get a brass wheel If you plan to go deep. I had some bad spots too and used my dremel with brass brush bits. Also...if it’s Rusty a bath for 24 hours in evaporust or vinegar would get in there too and make cleaning them up easier.

I recently bought a 1990 soft tail, 13k miles. The wheels along with other areas have similar rust. I'm hoping this will help clean them up. 800 to replace.

Was gonna suggest the wd40 with fine steel wool just b4 you pulled it out lol. Thats my go too. It dosnt bind up the wool like a paste polish will.

Hi Brian , do you think you can save a rim with rust holes? I did exactly what you do on my old rusty wheels and discovered a few rust holes that go through the metal unfortunately. They are only a couple of milimeters wide but I'm thinking that its not safe to restore them.

I’d look for a replacement personally. Sorry. Wheels are SUPER important...don’t take any chances. Who knows how much more is close to breaking through.

Citric acid bath for an hour or so then nuetralise and clean it up alot less elbow grease finish up by hand with the finer products you use

I have a 2008 Honda Rebel CMX, i have been looking to see if I can change the tires, from spoke to an alloy wheel, but there is no info on this. How can I go about possibly changing the wheels, not the size of the wheel.

Got an old bike early 2000 and I’m really not sure if it’s worth getting new rims or trying to diy fix. Someone please help with this, I don’t want it to snap because of the rust and I’m no good mechanic

I bet they are fine. You just need to put in the time. These old rims looked done for but with a bit (a lot) of work they cleaned right up...and these are 50 years old. I wouldn’t give up on them. Try clean them up. I bet you’ll be surprised by what you can. Good luck!

What do you suggest to use for a rim that isn’t really showing much rust but has a ton of greasy grime and old fork oil soaking on them for 10 years?

Degreaser. Dawn dish soap n hot water can do wonders. Gotta cut through the grime to see what’s underneath.

Protect it with wax. Regular cleaning. Surface needs to be continually maintained.

What do you put on the cleaned rims to keep the rust from coming back?

I hand wax them heavily. Once back on the bike and after rides I wipe them down with a spray wax/wash. If you keep at them they don’t seem to rust up. Neglect is the biggest enemy. I’ve considered clear coating them too once I get them to a certain point but haven’t gone that far yet. There’s always another spot to work on a little bit more. Lol thanks for checking out the videos!

Vaisakh K steel wool would work too. WD is optional. Works great tho!

Would be at least the Same effective to give it a Spray around (without the straw) and Work your way round with the Steel wool. So the WD40 can find its way underneith the Rust. Hope you understand what i mean. Greetings from Germany Where WD40 was invented ;)

Just medium grit rubbing compound will do. I’m sure there are many options. Look for something that specially says chrome.

De-rust the wool. A dip in evaporust could hurt.
