I bought this wheel from the scrap yard for £15. Once I got it home I realized it had a brand new Pirelli P3000 fitted. A perfect match for a Restore It video.
First I removed the air from the tyre. I then struggled to get the tyre off as the rim was so rusty. Once off I removed the wheel weights and valve. Once they were out of the way, I began to remove the loose rust and dirt with a metal wire wheel and rotary tool. Once most it was off, I placed the wheel in the blaster and blasted it for what felt like a lifetime. The results were not adequate. So the wheel went off to a friend's more power blaster, where two different grades of media were used. This gave the wheel its original colour back. But it was pitted pretty much everywhere. The filler was used to smooth out all of the pittings and imperfections. It took a hell of a lot of filler and sanding to get it close to acceptable. Once I thought I satisfied with the surface, I set about priming the wheel. I then added more filler and did more sanding to completely remove any sizeable imperfection. I then added the colour coats and lacquer coats. Once dry I took the wheel and tyre to a professional fitter as to not have the wheel scratched. He supplied a new valve and air. I then added tyre shine and the restoration was complete.
This wheel will not be used on a vehicle. This was for aesthetic's only. A personal challenge I set myself.

Thinking about, normally those wheels are painted with really basic powder coating so that's why it rusts so badly and considering what he did (sanding, primer, lacquer and stuff) it may be way more durable than the original coating tbh.

Thank you for putting in the description that this wheel was not to be used on a vehicle again, as a mechanic it bothered me that you were putting body filler on it, so I stopped, read the description and found I could enjoy this piece of art you have achieved. Subscribed!

What is wrong with putting body filler on the wheel? There seemed to be plenty good metal left, so strength should be fine. Only problem I can potentially see, is that the wheel is susceptible developing leaks. Because of the mating surface between tire and rim having a thin layer of body filler that can break off creating said leak.

  • @jacobstofmeel3619

Frank Underwood. A wheel has to be perfectly balanced for a car to behave properly and safely on the road. The wheel would be fine but when the filler comes off it will cause the wheel to be out of balance and unsafe. A little vibration at the wheel while magnify through the suspension components and causing premature wear on the suspension and then it's a snow ball effect from there one wards to making the car unroadworthy if not addressed.

Ahh, makes sense. Reminds me of a top gear episode where they eyeballed welding a new set of wheels on the outside of the original wheels. Ended up with the whole rear end failing.

Excellent job, I think for the people who look to complain about the man hours put in the restoration process, its not about the time spent, its about taking on the challenge and showing the viewers here "how to do" and the process of performing some of these restoration projects. Its pretty obvious the person performing these restoration projects has some very exceptional craftsman skills that should be admired. Don't you think if he wanted he would just go out and purchase some of the same products he restores? I had to break this explanation down to Sesame Street level for the people complaining who have completely missed the mark and have not a clue about some of the reasons why "Restore It" performs some of the restoration projects they do, lol!
