Remove Backgrounds in GIMP and Retain Hair Detail BETTER
Learn how to erase the background of an image, including portrait images and photos with any type of hair, using this simple workflow I created using GIMP 2.10.28. This technique works even if your model has messy hair and there's a complicated background. You can use this technique in pretty much any situation - whether it's a studio background or natural background.

Did this method improve your background removal in GIMP? Let me know below👇
Awesome! I usually use the laso tool that auto selects the edge between what I want to cut out and the background. I never thought to use the path selection tool. That gives a nice smooth curve result! I've always struggled with details when cutting out hair, but your method does a really good job! Great video! Thanks so much for using your knowledge and skill to help others! Give this man a WOO: WOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! 😃
Absolutely amazing what GIMP can do here.
Greeting's form South Africa. Thank you for these really detailed tutorials. Not knowing the first thing about Gimp or any other program like this your videos have been a great help. Thank you for all your hard work. Warm regards Stephen
Thanks. Learning gimp after having learned photoshop many moons ago and feeling so frustrated at the lack of ease I felt using this. Now I feel like it's in the bag!
Though I knew how to remove the background But wanted to just Thank You, for all the free content you provide. You tell so good information in all these tutorials, I can't even imagine how it would be in the paid one. Thanks

Awesome Mike!!!
great tutorial!
I'm just started learning by watching your videos
This is amazing!!!
Excellent Video!!
Thanks Dave for the awesome Info.
Once again thanks for a great tutorial. That's exactly what I'm having to do right now with my companies photo headshots and I was having a problem trying to lasso the hair. I was struggling a little, probably more so because the models I'm working with are, let's just say not as photogenic :D
i've been using gimp for 2 months. learned so much stuff watching your tutorials. Thank you. also i use paths+ layer mask+ color to alpha functions to keep finer hair details (like curly hair with so much background peeking through them) while removing the background. after selecting hair with the background peeking through colour to alpha can reduce the background color all the way to transparency or closer to that. i find that method very easy and don't have to paint/erase anything.

Hi there, could you provide me a link to a video tutorial specifically to what you have said in this comment? Or would you make a video tutorial about it? Thank you
Great way to do it :-) thank you once again !

Thanks!
This is great. I think it should be in the Udemy course as it brings selections, paths and masks together.
Genial! Nuevo video!
Great tutorial man, might come in handy when/if I finally switch to GIMP.

This is magic!
smart usage of your tools
The lads be think'n "The image contains a background?"
Never knew about the foreground select tool, that's very useful. Do you have any tutorial on the path process, how to trace an existing curve keeping it accurate and smooth?
Great video! Just learning this stuff myself. Would this technique be used even if you have a green screen background?
Thank you for these great easy to listen videos. I have a photo of myself and want to touch up the teeth where I have lost the enamel and are no longer white. I tried color matching but that was on paint 3d. It was not even close. is it possible to take a section of the good tooth and then just copy it to the not-so-good tooth? do you have a video on this ? many thanks in advance
Though I clicked this because of different reason, Thank you still for sharing this wonderful tutorial

Was G'MIC updated yet for this version?
Cool
Can someone help me ?? I was using the gimp re synthesiser plugin, it works fine in 300dpi but crashes when same the image is scanned to 3200 dpi, it shows plugin resynthesiser returned no return values. My computer is pretty high specs 16Gb RAM, Ryzen 5 3600X,
I learned gimp by experimenting lmao never knew dragging a color would auto fill selection
Can you please tell me how you use Gimp to delete text in a JPG while leaving the background intact?

easiest way is using gimp resynthesizer extension. otherwise you have to use clone tool or heal tool.
Whenever I try and use the foreground tool, my computer freezes and I have to reboot it.
👍👍👍
👍🏻👍🏻
Super Thanks.

Thank you too!
I dont know why but drag and drop the foreground into the mask is giving me a completely different reaction. It's like it's doing everything around the path? Seems to be turning the duplicate layer white and not affecting the mask Im dropping it into. Yeah I've retried it 3 times still the same result. The drag and drop part is just totally messing me up. Seems to be dropping it into the whole layer not just the layer mask. Just filling in all the inner part of the path (which I deleted) solid white and leaving the outer edges of the hair untouched
Why we can do whole process with foreground selection tool only??

Foreground select tool does a poor job selecting the body because there are too many colors for the algorithm to decipher within the selection area.

How can I increase the background size?
@DaviesMediaDesign

Click on the background layer in Layers panel to make it active, then hit shift+s on the keyboard to grab the scale tool. Drag the transform handles outward to scale up. Hit enter.
OMG ... I have tried this sooo many times, at @9:17 you say 'hit the Enter key' and you get marching ants ... when I hit enter, the preview mode colour disappears and I just get my picture in full colour with NO ANTS ...as though I have done absolutely nothing. >>>> I remembered I hit CTRL-T by mistake. No idea what it does, but hitting it again results in the marching ants ...phew! BTW Your preview shows the background image with detail. Mine is washed out, making it hard to distinguish where the hair is. I adjusted the Preview color Alpha channel to better replicate what you are demonstrating.

Gimp needs to update the selection tool like Affinity brush selection (much much faster)...
Sudo gimp -R background
