Removable Hammock Posts with treated 8ft 4x4 lumber

Спорт

A quick demonstration of how we put 4x4 treated lumber posts into our backyard law n for hanging hammocks. We didn't want to leave them there permanently, so these slide into vinyl post sleeves that remain in the ground. Roofing shingles provide a cap for those sleeves when the posts aren't in them to keep the water out of the holes. Quick and easy project with all materials available from your local hardware store. Hammocks not included. Quick set cement was used around the vinyl sleeves, with just some dirt to backfill at the very top so the sod can grow up against it again.

very clever. I've been thinking about this setup, but wasn't digging having the posts staying permanently. You solved that issue for me and even went beyond on covering the holes when not in use. Thanks!

Clever use of the shingle. This is the kind of removal post I'm hoping to build. Picking up tips here and there from various videos, yours being the only one with the shingle and vinyl sleeve ideas. Thanks!

I’ve been thinking about doing this as well, except putting the 4x4 at an angle

nice set up but word of warning I did the same thing and ended up with a huge gash and 10 staples in my head after the timber snapped and slammed down on my melon! Notice how the post on right is flexing with even a child swinging on it at 45 secs into the video? note: I even used 6x6 pressure treated! be safe

That has been my concern. I'm using a 5x6. How soon did it break? Was it a few years old?

I just did a quick calc. at 250lbs man attached 7 ft up, on a 6x6 - that load is ~450 lbs and equates to 1300psi at the beam surface. that's right at the failure load for a #2 prime beam. It was just a matter of when it fails, not if. You're lucky it was only stitches. Could've killed you.

You're 6x6 must have been compromised, no way that would snap unless you pit Shitbag Stacy Abrams on it

Vinyl fencepost? If so, are they 4"x4" or 5"x5"?

Yes, 4x4 vinyl cemented at the bottom of the hole around the outside, inside left hollow for the treated 4x4 to slide into.

How many hammocks can be attached to one post? I need 6. Should I make 2 triangles or a larger post in the center

I'm not an engineer so use your best judgement! Keep in mind you need room for the hammocks to swing a little bit. And the size and weight of the people in the hammocks will definitely make a difference as to how much each post can hold. My kids are teenagers now and still use these original posts; they have held up pretty well with gentle use. Your mileage may vary!

Get the hammock first and space them to be the right distance for your hammock, figuring out how high off the ground you need them to be.

What exactly are those vinyl post sleeves ?

  • @MrOccasionalPoster

The vinyl "sleeves" are really vinyl fence posts that I just cut to the depth of the whole. They're sold in 8 foot lengths for a six foot fence. I bought one and cut two 3 foot sections out of it.

I'm not an engineer and I make no guarantees, but these are holding up fine after daily use for over a month with kids and average-sized adult use. Maybe anyone over 200lbs could adapt the design with just some larger eye bolts that go all the way through the post with a nut to secure it on the other end. We are starting to see the holes for these hooks "expand" with use, still safe but over time I'll probably redrill and attach them in a new place on the same post.

@@MrOccasionalPoster Engineer here, too! Tension dead load on those hooks is more than 450 lbs with a 'merica sized adult. Well north of the rated load for those hooks. With my kids, it's the "live load" I encounter since mine like to "bounce" in the hammocks. A larger diameter Eye bolt or lag in a 6x6 is probably closer to what you need, UNLESS you screw an eye into the concrete base on the other side, and route the line through the pole. This cuts the bending load tremendously, and your 4x4s would even hold up to the tubby challenge. Otherwise this is a super clever setup. LOVE IT!
