    "Plunk test." I've never heard of that until just seeing your video. I will begin incorporating that tomorrow. I just got a few thousand Unis Ginex primers, and so far they are working great for me. Great video, thank you!

    Gotta make sure it will "plunk" in each barrel you plan to shoot them out of, for pistol, at least. This will guarantee you have proper room in any chamber those rounds will be going through. I don't think I've had any of the Unis Ginex primers fail out of 3000 that I've loaded and tried so far. For the money, I can't complain. Thanks for watching!

    You can have my share of those Ginex primers. I find them to be oversized and very hard to seat with a lot of flattened out primers. I have experienced several misfires with them. Some seat fine and some don't.

    Thanks for the video, although I mainly shoot cast lead in my 9's my local shop carries the XTP line of handgun bullets and I couldn't pass picking up a couple boxes of the 9 mm 115 gr. XTP bullets. I prefer the 124 gr. but for $17 a box I'm not picky, waiting on some nickel plated brass to arrive to load them up.

    I shoot 90% cast, but got these for free from their promotion. I would prefer 124 or 147 varieties, but we can find some of those later. $17 a box is a great price 👍🇺🇸👊

    Thanks for the video! I was wondering how Longshot would work. My goal is to reload an accurate 115gr round that performs well through a sub compact (3 inch) barrel. I also carry a Hellcat, and a Kimber Micro 9. I ran your recipe through my QuickLoad Ballistic program, and did a theoretical ladder test with other grain weights. Of course, you need to do an ACTUAL ladder test, over a chronograph, to verify these results. Since I can't post pictures, I will type out some of the results. 9mm Lugar, 3" barrel, 115gr XTP, COAL of 1.165" Small pistol primer, case lenght .754" MAX PSI 35,000 5.9gr Longshot: case fill capacity 57.4% Muzzle velocity 913fps, Chamber pressure 18,356 psi. 79% of propellant burnt. 6.5gr Longshot: case fill capacity 63.3% Muzzle velocity 305fps. Chamber pressure 22,638 psi. 83.57% propellant burnt. 7 gr Longshot: case fill capacity 68.3% Muzzle velocity 327fps. Chamber pressure 26,798 psi. 87% propellant burnt. There are gaps in the weight, which equate to pressure changes. My COAL is shorter, because it also increases pressure. I like to see case fill in the 80% range and muzzle velocity over 300fps, as thats the min needed for proper expansion. Tweeking the powder to 7.1gr kicks thing up into a better range, but 7.3gr starts getting dangerous. I believe the sweet spot is somewhere between 6.5gr - 7.0gr. !!REMEMBER!! this are theoretical velocities and must be ladder tested for safety. They are also estimated through a 3" barrel. Longer barrels will change both pressure and velocity, but still remain in the safe zone, in a 4.7" barrel. I have been pouring over these number for a week or two, and plan on doing my own ladder test in the up coming week. Good luck, stay safe and happy reloading!

  • @DummyRound

    @DummyRound

    Thanks for the detailed comment. I seated them shorter until they plunked easily in both guns and went with 5.9gr as Hornady listed 6.0gr as max. The case fill was nearly at the bottom of the projectiles. Could probably work up a bit higher, but longer barrels would probably work better with this 'slower' powder for 9mm. It seemed like the extra inch of barrel only gave ~20-40fps gain in velocity between the two bullets. Also weird to note the shorter barrel gave better ES/SD numbers. Accuracy was as good as I could shoot it off hand. Cases were slightly dirty. My chronograph data from 5 shots were as follows: 115gr Berrys Plated w/ 5.9gr Longshot @ 83F -Ruger P95 1061fps avg 70fps ES 30 fps SD -Hellcat 1043fps avg 16fps ES 6fps SD 115gr Hdy XTP w/ 5.9gr Longshot @ 83F -Ruger P95 1099 fps avg 30fps ES 13fps SD -Hellcat 1058fps avg 30fps ES 10fps SD Thanks.

    @@DummyRound thanks for the chrono numbers. I loaded 5 rounds of each, starting at 5.9, going up to 6.5gr. Hope to shoot them today. QuickLoad is very handy, but I do agree with your observations on case fill. 6.5gr seems to be the max full without compression.

    I guess im just wondering what reason somebody would choose this, not to mention out of a compact barrel. I could see if that was the only powder you really have in your possession, and in that case sure. There is really no other excuse unless you just dont know any better. I guess it is good for real world testing to know if you really had to for some end times scenario that it will work.

    It gave the best numbers from the powders I had on hand in GRT, and it's not the only length barrel I was testing it in. Not the best option, not the worst. What do you suggest specifically for a short barrel like the Hellcat?

    @@DummyRound obviously titegroup especially in lighter bullets but i could understand if those pressures make folks nervous or its just not getting you over the top but people leave alot on the table when it comes to titegroup. For plinking and defensive loads i would lean toward Power Pistol or CFE pistol. I know PP isnt always available but CFE is almost always. They are gonna give the velocity with a good clean full burn n not blowing half of it out all over ur chronograph. Winchester 231 is also a good all around but i find it leaves goldish colored grains in my brass n gear that i dont care for but it does perform. Also XTPs perform very well and dont require the rediculous velocities that some hollow points do. Im sure you probably know most of this by now

The weekends here and I have another 40 caliber shoot tomorrow with the power pistol so a new video tomorrow.

They say Magtech especially has hard primer cups but I never had any problems with those, maybe its only an issue when using reduced strength hammer springs in sports pistols.
