Reloading 357 Magnum Episode 5 - Further Testing With Hodgdon H110 And The Cast Lee 358150RN

Our second loads with some Hodgdon H110. We are trying to see if changing charge weight will change point of impact, as well as testing over the chronograph to measure velocity data.

    FYI, to stop powder flakes from clinging to your measuring pan or the inside of a powder measure, wipe them down with a dryer sheet. Gets rid of the static cling instantly.✌️😇

    As we used to do with our black powder rifles, is listen to the sound when working up a load. When the sound goes from BOOM to CRA-ACK you know you're getting close to your working/accuracy load.

    I use a sharpie in different colors to color code for different powder loads, the sharpie stays on the primer after the firing. H110 has been a stellar performer in our top end 44Mag loads. I do use magnum primers, the consensus seems to favor the magnum primers.

  • @DummyRound

    I'll have to try that with marking the primer. I'm still new to reloading 357mag so I'm not quite sure how much hotter we can go. The data I found went up to about 16.7gr, but that was a different bullet of the same weight. We're also way over Hornady's max load, already! Might have to come back to this one later after we try some other powders, and see what sort of numbers they are able to produce. Thanks for watching brother 👊👍🇺🇸

    I made up 50 of some 150gr coated with 14.5gr H110. I think it might have been too-low. I'm glad to see that you can use the powder coated projectiles without leading (Pb+). I think 14.5 was too low and may not have lit. The two FTLs I had fired on the second strike, which means that the primer may not have burned. The gun has a pretty serious trigger job. So I'm wondering if going up to 16 as a start ought to get me 100% light rate. If not, I think that my springs are at fault. I get some 150gr boolits from an old-timer at a local gun show.

    When I first started working with H110 I reduced my loads too much. I had inconsistent velocities. Un-burnt powder was getting deposited in front in my shooting lane. You could see a layer of powder dust. I love H110 in heavy 45 Colt, 44 Mag and 454 Casull. Thanks for sharing your experience with 357 magnum.

    I absolutely listen to the pop! It's not always convenient to set up the chrono and when I expect subsonic I listen for it. If it goes supersonic you can tell. My main interest is low power, low velocity. It can be very challenging like high power , high velocity.

    Thanks for the video, Quick question for you, have you had any issues using lead bullets? I’m getting into reloading and am hesitant to buy bullets as I’ve always heard non jacketed bullets foul the barrel. I would be shooting my .357/.38 rounds out of a snubnose Taurus 605 and a Rossi 16” Lever Action.

  • @DummyRound

    @DummyRound

    I have had zero leading issues with powder coating, but I'm not pushing them at jacketed velocities. Traditional lubed lead can be troublesome, but PC and Hi-Tek have totally changed the casting game. Thanks!

    I've never heard anybody mention how it sounds, but I can usually tell when they go from one report to another. Kind of like when a weak load won't function, then you increase to where it does, it will sound a bit different sometimes... You'll have to share your findings with us when you get done testing!

    I still have never used H110... 🤔 So many other pistol powders that I have available. Maybe some day, if/when powders become available again, I'll try some? From what I've heard, H110 likes to be right at the edge of compression, to perform well? Good test, though 👍🇺🇸

    You caught on to crimping quickly! You have to crimp about in the middle of the groove not too high or low. I read this really old Nosler manual that claimed crimping towards the top is better and I tried that and it just doesn't "bite' into the groove/cannelure very well. I kinda had to figure it out the hard way lol. You have any leading with the H110?

  • @DummyRound

    @DummyRound

    2 жыл бұрын

    I was just guessing on the crimp, but that's where it looked good 🤣 no leading with the H110. I've ran cast/PC stuff past 2k without any of that. That's going to be an upcoming project- high speed lead and actually getting the cast Lee 55gr to shoot in my AR. Now that I have a chronograph it'll be easier to see what's happening. Thanks for the comment brother 👊👍🇺🇸

    @@DummyRound Thats good I have been thinking about trying slow burning powders again for my powder coated bullets. Haven't been able to get good consistency so I stopped. I really like using 800x and Unique for lead bullets they seem to play well with it. What kind of lead are you using? I just use wheel weights and sometimes if I'm feeling froggy I throw abit of tin in.

    I haven't used any 800x but that looks like a good one. Unique is a favorite of mine, but it's hard to come by, and usually a bit more pricey. I have some other magnum style powders to try for the 357mag so that'll be fun to see how they compare to H110.
