Religion and Sex - The Thinking Atheist Radio Podcast #44

The church insists that sex is God's gift to humankind. Yet few organizations are more clumsy and repressive on issues of sexuality as the church.
What are the religious doctrines relating to sex, and how do they jive with the scientific explanations for intimacy, attraction, love, lust and the things we do in the dark (and in broad daylight).
We interview Dr. Marty Klein www.martyklein.com, author of such books as "America's War on Sex: The Attack on Law,Lust & Liberty." And we speak with Darrel Ray, Ed.D, author of the book "Sex and God: How Religion Distorts Sexuality."
Plus...your calls and emails.

I was raised in a relaxed "libertarian" type setting. I was taught about sex, violence, and so on and I feel so enlightened. While my friends are approaching the world and feeling confused, I feel quite comfortable with reality and what it has to offer. To hide the world from your children is to hide what eventually might cause more hurt later than needed.

It's 30 years since I quit Christianity and the discomfort about sex was the longest-lasting hang-up. Now with a sexually active teenager, I'm trying to deal with that issue/imprinting again. My rational brain says it's all good and healthy, but my deep-seated indoctrination is playing havoc with my emotions. I think I need to read that book. Thanks, Darrel and Seth.

This reminded me of Bertrand Russell's book Why I Am Not Christian where he talks about mystery. If nudity, sex and sexuality are a mystery and were told it's forbidden for us to see it then we're going to want to look for it. I think that's why states that are more religious are definitely going to have more interest in porn and sex because it's a mystery... And of course majority of us are sexual beings.

We could watch terrible violence, but the minute sexual activity entered the movie during movie night (which was friday night), then shit got weird. We, of course, were raised in a Christian household where people were completely afraid of having the 'shameful' conversation of sex in our household. And when my brother and I finally left faith, we couldn't get enough of it. I am SOOOOO glad that you did this podcast. Very eye-opening and reaffirming. THANK YOU, SETH!

Wow, I think I just had a brilliant insight: 1) Religion teaches people that sex is a sin. 2) People naturally react against being told what to do by doing the exact opposite Therefore: 3) Religions that condemn sex the most will tend to proliferate the most by having MOAR SEX! Therefore, evolution favors religions that condemn sex the most!

As a gay atheist, I got to feel that feeling of liberation twice, but I've also have twice the amount of distrust among some of the people I tell. On the whole, I feel like the more I tell people about both, the more I learn to not give a single fuck when they tell me I'm immoral.

A common misconception is also that women only pretty themselves up with, you know, makeup, short skirts etc. because of men. For many, wearing a short skirt is about showing of their confidence, not their legs, it's about self-expression. When I paint my nails green, it's because I like the color green more than the standard pink color of nails and I have the technology to remedy it. It's like thinking that a man who buys a big fancy car immjediately does it to impress women.

HOLY SEX!!! This is one the most interesting and enlightening TTA shows that I have ever listened to. If I were to have daughter, I probably wouldn't get a shotgun, I'd get a barrett m82. Growing up I didn't have a sister and basically had a very masculine family so if I were to have a daughter, she would probably be extra precious to me. Taking to account what Dr. Klein had to say has really got me thinking...

Part 1 Two recent books I have read shed some light on this topic. First, "The Templar Revelation", discussing the "true identity of christ" suggests that the church repressed the what would have been the teachings, which included equality of the sexes, and that sexual initiation, achieving sexual alchemy and understanding were essential parts of a boy becoming a man. Part 2 >>>

In the last section the host says that it sounds 'predatory' to talk about women the way the two men on the phones were, but he needs to remember that women want sex just as much as men do. We are not so meek and helpless when it comes to sex, we just have so many more restrictive expectations and sexual stereotypes to conform to, which force us to hide how we really feel about sex and how much we want it. Religion has annihilated women's freedom of sexual expression, more so than for men.

Fortunately my mother explained sex to us children. I myself also had a philosophy, that if my children asked a question in an intelligent way I had an obligation to explain the topic to the best of my ability so they could understand it. Also the sex topic was covered multiple times as the subject came up. They seem to have done well to this point.

Out of the many ways religion fucked up my life, the fixation on sexuality and how "wrong" having sex before marriage is messed me up the most in my first relationship with a very loving girl whose only idea about sex is that she wanted it to be a manifestation of the love we shared and not an empty physical action. Now that I see through the lies I can't help regretting what might have been if j didn't believe this nonsense back then.

@grozde Actually, its common for vegans/vegetarians to take vitamin suppliment because it is a sacrifice to limit the diet to such a degree when our body is built as an omnivore. I mean, you possibly can create such a diet that gives all you need, but it is sacrifice, not including those who do it by choice, not because of a disdain for the taste of meat, but love meat, it is a sacrifice to avoid something so good. I know I couldnt make that sacrifice.

@TheZachh - I see what you mean, but think about it a little more. It's tempting to assign a guiding cause, God for some folks, when seeing a process run, when what drives it is much simpler, in this case, basic chemistry in complex systems. People also tend to think that evolution's goal was to create more complex organisms, when actually evolution can go in any direction.

@EudaemonicGirl: Japan and Western and Northern European countries are definitely the most liberal worldwide when it comes to sexuality. But, and I think I agreed with you on that, even in our liberal countries most boys and girls would rather talks with mum or dad in private about those topics and not in front of everyone at the dinner table (at least when it comes to family. Friends are a different story). BUT if someone feels comfortable doing that it would not be a problem.

Yes, there is someone who can work with me somewhere in the world. I do not mind pleasing a mate, but I am sure many will find it a problem that they can not please me. Still, there has to be a female that can work with me someplace. My current age is 28 by the way. Again, thanks for the kind thoughts

@Prelude610 I agree with you - but I still think that evolution does have a purpose (as does all living things): To adapt, grow, expand, gain knowledge/learn, survive, pass on DNA. Repeat. Otherwise we simply would not be able to survive. We would not learn from our mistakes. Our sheer ability to learn is a prime example of evolution in action. -Touch the stove. -Stove burns. -Stove is very hot, painful, destructive. -Do not touch the stove again. @shiftplusone80: Good point about the other ideologies. Racism, extreme nationalism are signs of insecurity as well so it often comes down to men being insecure and weak, trying to make themselves feel better with ideologies that tell them they are superior in one way or the other. Good that you found a way out of this. Shows that you are now a more confident, real man. ^_^

@InariNoSasuke Part 3. Naturally, everyone is attracted to everyone on some deep level. Otherwise we wouldn't be able to tell if someone was ugly, attractive, or of the same/opposite sex. We are programmed to scan other beings for attractions or flaws, because we are seeking to reproduce and be with a companion that resonates the same attraction (or commond bond). So naturally everyone is somewhat "omnisexual".

@mindprism I'd agree that the point where a species identifies itself different than others is interesting and perhaps there's even research on that. But even in the example you gave with chimps, non-predatory mammals actually have an instinct to help the young of others, and I think there are examples of humans raised in the wild as well. This tendency is even taken advantage of by some species, "brood parasites."
