Religion and Sex - The Thinking Atheist Radio Podcast #44
The church insists that sex is God's gift to humankind. Yet few organizations are more clumsy and repressive on issues of sexuality as the church.
What are the religious doctrines relating to sex, and how do they jive with the scientific explanations for intimacy, attraction, love, lust and the things we do in the dark (and in broad daylight).
We interview Dr. Marty Klein www.martyklein.com, author of such books as "America's War on Sex: The Attack on Law,Lust & Liberty." And we speak with Darrel Ray, Ed.D, author of the book "Sex and God: How Religion Distorts Sexuality."
Plus...your calls and emails.

I was raised in a relaxed "libertarian" type setting. I was taught about sex, violence, and so on and I feel so enlightened. While my friends are approaching the world and feeling confused, I feel quite comfortable with reality and what it has to offer. To hide the world from your children is to hide what eventually might cause more hurt later than needed.

You're very lucky. I'm another one of the people here who had a very strict religious upbringing. The older I get, the more I realize how much damage occurred from it.
My favorite line: Bible Belt Sex: It's the nastiest, dirtiest thing you could ever do and you should save it for someone you love.
I’m a recent deconvert and it breaks my heart seeing people struggle with self loathing guilt and shame over lust look at the comment section of any religious video about overcoming lust it really is heartbreaking.
Sex is evil, evil is sin. Sin is forgiven... So let's begin!

It's 30 years since I quit Christianity and the discomfort about sex was the longest-lasting hang-up. Now with a sexually active teenager, I'm trying to deal with that issue/imprinting again. My rational brain says it's all good and healthy, but my deep-seated indoctrination is playing havoc with my emotions. I think I need to read that book. Thanks, Darrel and Seth.
Nobody can blame sexuality for me being an atheist. I'm an asexual 27-year-old virgin that has no intention of having sex in the foreseeable future...
This reminded me of Bertrand Russell's book Why I Am Not Christian where he talks about mystery. If nudity, sex and sexuality are a mystery and were told it's forbidden for us to see it then we're going to want to look for it. I think that's why states that are more religious are definitely going to have more interest in porn and sex because it's a mystery... And of course majority of us are sexual beings.
I love the interview with Darrel Ray. He really put some light into my own upbringing.
We could watch terrible violence, but the minute sexual activity entered the movie during movie night (which was friday night), then shit got weird. We, of course, were raised in a Christian household where people were completely afraid of having the 'shameful' conversation of sex in our household. And when my brother and I finally left faith, we couldn't get enough of it. I am SOOOOO glad that you did this podcast. Very eye-opening and reaffirming. THANK YOU, SETH!
Seth please have this man on again, this is really interesting! Great show as always.
The interview with Dr. Klein was excellent, I'm glad you pulled the late night for that.
Educational beyond the usual topics of religion and logic. This video needs to be featured!
The shows get better and better Seth. Much love. Also, F Bomb central this podcast was... haha, it was great.
(Odd Raven wrote: "if there was any religion i would join, it would be paganism.") My sentiments exactly.
I went to school with a guy named Harry Palms. He was always asking to be excused to go to the washroom.
All well said, as always. Whilst i came here for the discussion, I have to comment that you've chosen a fantastic image.
I've been waiting for this episode for a long time.
Great episode, great guest. Do more shows like this. You'll put NPR to same.
Ohhhh Seth, this is my FAVORITE show so far.
Wow, I think I just had a brilliant insight: 1) Religion teaches people that sex is a sin. 2) People naturally react against being told what to do by doing the exact opposite Therefore: 3) Religions that condemn sex the most will tend to proliferate the most by having MOAR SEX! Therefore, evolution favors religions that condemn sex the most!

AntiCitizenX Hahahaha, that’s a brilliant insight, also sort of depressing.
Another amazing podcast!!
Really enjoyed this one. Gets you thinking... more than usual.
monotheistic people with unnatural repressed urges will always be looking out their window/cage at the rest of the world and will be curious at the atheistic point of view. Keep talking about it for their sake too. Excellent podcast as usual
I love this guys voice. So Soothing.
Marty Klein is awesome! I follow his blog and he's a really cool guy.
thank you for another great show :)
This is an amazing podcast....
I loved the mormon add that played before this delightful podcast... lol
Awesome audio quality..
I went to sunday school type classes at my church sophmore year of high school, once a week for most of the school year. The entire 1st half of the classes was about "chastity".
Very interesting podcast. Loved the interview with Klein and would love to hear more specialists concerning your topics at hand. From 'Holland' (the netherlands), the perfect sex-country (with a wink): Thanks. Really enjoyed this one
Still listening, I'm at 1:19. Great episode!
great show
Really, rrrrrreally good topic.
It's not just a sexual thing - Religion in general just makes humans hate themselves unecessarily by telling them the're inherently flawed and in need of someone to solve their problems for them.
As a gay atheist, I got to feel that feeling of liberation twice, but I've also have twice the amount of distrust among some of the people I tell. On the whole, I feel like the more I tell people about both, the more I learn to not give a single fuck when they tell me I'm immoral.
A common misconception is also that women only pretty themselves up with, you know, makeup, short skirts etc. because of men. For many, wearing a short skirt is about showing of their confidence, not their legs, it's about self-expression. When I paint my nails green, it's because I like the color green more than the standard pink color of nails and I have the technology to remedy it. It's like thinking that a man who buys a big fancy car immjediately does it to impress women.
Thanks Seth for the upload, I'm going to college and I rarely have time to catch your shows live. I truly appreciate the time you put into it all! Great show yet again!
@TheThinkingAtheist A sexul oppresed conservative atheist. You're one of a kind Seth.
@SinnFein4ever Thanks for the advise. It is nice that I got so much advise here. Normally when I share anything on KZread I get replies like "losssser" or other such things. It is a nice change of pace.
I remember a T shirt where it was written on the front "One day, my prince will come" And on the back "And that day, my dad will shoot him"
The Mormon commercials KZread plays before the video starts are funny.
"Re energize!" @ 59:15 :D
Just checked the on the book ^^ i think ill buy it. Thx man
59:12 Lol it sounded like a sound effect ton "re-energize"
I got an "I'm a Mormon" add when I loaded this video. I'm not sure if I should laugh at the irony or be pissed.
my very, at that time (she did eventually leave) catholic mother told us that we should wait for marriage for sex, but if we didn't to be sure to use contraception. that was in the '60s.
Perfect analogy at 22:00. Religion just messes up everything.
HOLY SEX!!! This is one the most interesting and enlightening TTA shows that I have ever listened to. If I were to have daughter, I probably wouldn't get a shotgun, I'd get a barrett m82. Growing up I didn't have a sister and basically had a very masculine family so if I were to have a daughter, she would probably be extra precious to me. Taking to account what Dr. Klein had to say has really got me thinking...
When those missionaries brough the epinomious position to some islanders, probably in the pacific or idonesia or something, it got nicknamed something that translates to "She can't participate" in the local language. XD
Part 1 Two recent books I have read shed some light on this topic. First, "The Templar Revelation", discussing the "true identity of christ" suggests that the church repressed the what would have been the teachings, which included equality of the sexes, and that sexual initiation, achieving sexual alchemy and understanding were essential parts of a boy becoming a man. Part 2 >>>
Oooh Shibari art for the vid! Seriously though this is a topic I am highly interested in.
@Prelude610 I saw it - Good call!
In the last section the host says that it sounds 'predatory' to talk about women the way the two men on the phones were, but he needs to remember that women want sex just as much as men do. We are not so meek and helpless when it comes to sex, we just have so many more restrictive expectations and sexual stereotypes to conform to, which force us to hide how we really feel about sex and how much we want it. Religion has annihilated women's freedom of sexual expression, more so than for men.
@schootingstarr I seem to recall also hearing, in times past, in India, there are times when a widow is deliberately sacrificed on account of the recent death of her husband.
Yeah, it's even easier to see the various amounts of skepticism and rationality in atheists if you spend lots of time with another atheist. Atheists or not, we're all unique human beings.
@knightd00b - I had a friend who did field research on primates in Uganda. They sit there and watch them all day, taking notes, and checking off boxes saying things like dorsal-dorsal and dorsal-ventral, keeping track of these little details among many others.
@EudaemonicGirl I'm Dutch and it is not unthinkable here, although the dinner table isn't the typical place and your parents not always the obvious people to talk about it.
I'm kind of unsurprised that the broadcast managed to avoid the topic of circumcision. I think it is a good indication of what we need to block out from our conscious recognition. The broadcast has 15 mins left, but I doubt they will hit on it.
@SinnFein4ever Yes, well the doctor told my mother he had to perform the surgery or I would become sick with an infection. She was uneducated about that at the time. I have not spoken to my doctor about it, but I think fixing my social issues would be much more helpful than to actually repair the damage. Everthing does work, just not as enjoyable as things should be. Thanks for the suggestion though. Maybe I will ask my doctor next time I see her.
Fortunately my mother explained sex to us children. I myself also had a philosophy, that if my children asked a question in an intelligent way I had an obligation to explain the topic to the best of my ability so they could understand it. Also the sex topic was covered multiple times as the subject came up. They seem to have done well to this point.
Wow! This video is incredible! It really put into perspective how puritanical the US is.
I like the picture to this video, it could just was well be the cover to an article about jealous abusive relationships. :D
I wish i could listen to your broadcasts live so i would have the chance of calling and saying a few stuff. Oh well....
@mindprism As I recall what is interesting for a evolutionary biologist is "gene survival" not individual survival. So in social animals since the gene pool is shared with the group, survival of the group still applies, just from a different origin.
My sexual education was my father handing me a romance book. I didn't realize it at the time.

Mine was my parents leaving certain books where I could find them. Among which some pretty heavy duty stuff.
@Textra1 ANteaching them to wait can be very good advice. There is no harm in waiting.
Great show, and I appreciate your bringing up homosexuality. My question: what do you make of homophobic atheists/agnostics/freethinkers/humanists? I've run across a few. Are they simply still under religion's influence (and won't admit it?) Is it the "ick factor" and immaturity on their part? I'll look forward to your upcoming show devoted to this topic.
What romance novel did you pull that picture from (so I can go read it)?
16:00 we will oppose this conservative movement at every turn. oppose the religious right at every turn, I will defy any law they pass. I will not conform to the whims of the hyper conservative prudes.
@Prelude610 Video or photographic data or just "my buddyy from canada says" LoL. I'll see it when I believe it. Can you direct me to any other posted or peer reviewed papers? Thanks.
That Holy Trinity Comment Killed me xD
@Prelude610 "People also tend to think that evolution's goal was to create more complex organisms, when actually evolution can go in any direction." -- Some of the wisest words I've ever read. I appreciate your insight. And I certainly agree, everyone is out to justify their existence and explain it in rational terms. For most that is god, a god, or some other synonymous entity. In reality, it's something we will never know unless we achieve some sort of enlightenment - or die I suppose.
"God says so", best reason ever used in history.
intimate relationship makes me irrational like nothing else. i should be concerned some, but feelings for her bordering love invaded to intensify, i attempt to talk rational with her, she tries to reassure, but i'm seeing warning signs of hard heart. I was going to say glad to be with agnostic but at this point, i'd settle for nice christian, and if they accepted me, i'd even go to church with them. a very complex topic handled smooth; I sure hope to meet TheThinking(Articulate)Atheist
Man, 58:30, I've been saying that for a long time now.
Absolutely brilliant show! Sexual ethics has never seemed so rational!
i like the robotic feedback when he said renenergize
@seabe You should be more specific, I dont remember anything controversial in regards to such a thing. But I listened to this a day or 2 ago, what did you have a problem with? and do you remember a timing? if you mean the doctor, he was on quite awhile.
and start,,, THINKING!
@TheLuckySaGe That's why we need some more kick ass wars!!
There's this idea that sexuality is somehow dirty and thus incompatible with childlike innocence, but.. we are born as sexual beings and in the age of TV and internet, we can't expect our children not to find out about sex if we don't tell them. Heck, even without TV, they talk amongst themselves and guess stuff...
I have to see if this is on itunes
@HybridD91 Do you have any examples? I have never heard that and as far as I know it was illegal in every state.
haha cheers on the Song of Solomon examples!!
Out of the many ways religion fucked up my life, the fixation on sexuality and how "wrong" having sex before marriage is messed me up the most in my first relationship with a very loving girl whose only idea about sex is that she wanted it to be a manifestation of the love we shared and not an empty physical action. Now that I see through the lies I can't help regretting what might have been if j didn't believe this nonsense back then.
@grozde Actually, its common for vegans/vegetarians to take vitamin suppliment because it is a sacrifice to limit the diet to such a degree when our body is built as an omnivore. I mean, you possibly can create such a diet that gives all you need, but it is sacrifice, not including those who do it by choice, not because of a disdain for the taste of meat, but love meat, it is a sacrifice to avoid something so good. I know I couldnt make that sacrifice.
"There's a small number of religious people who FREQUENT the thinking atheist..." 39:50 Right, pay attention: fre'quent (the verb) is pronounced differently from 'frequent (the adjective). The stress falls on the SECOND syllable when it's a verb.
@waltermh111 where the doctor pointed out, it was when she was expected to bear children. It doesnt mean they couldnt bear children earlier though. Yeah, puberty avg being 10 is possibly younger, but either way, it is how it is, for whatever reason, we need to work with it, not against it for the best results, the most harm reduction.
@SnoweyMan111 it isnt obviously there though. Many places dont have it or have abstinance only. And since they are different curriculum by state, some states will be better than others. Also, for sure a class wont discuss all the complications of life, but it can at least potentially open discussions and help a little. I wish we would learn from europe in this regard.
Men who are homophobes from what I understand tend more likely to be bullies, because they view weaker kids the same way they do gays, & being a bully gives them a since of power & control.
"In nothern Europe, there are some countries where young people are encouraged to talk at the dinner table about sexual decision making." Wait, what? I'm Swedish and that is unthinkable here.
@TheZachh - I see what you mean, but think about it a little more. It's tempting to assign a guiding cause, God for some folks, when seeing a process run, when what drives it is much simpler, in this case, basic chemistry in complex systems. People also tend to think that evolution's goal was to create more complex organisms, when actually evolution can go in any direction.
@EudaemonicGirl: Japan and Western and Northern European countries are definitely the most liberal worldwide when it comes to sexuality. But, and I think I agreed with you on that, even in our liberal countries most boys and girls would rather talks with mum or dad in private about those topics and not in front of everyone at the dinner table (at least when it comes to family. Friends are a different story). BUT if someone feels comfortable doing that it would not be a problem.
@Aezelll I appreciate the kind thoughts but the physical damage is not nearly as big of a problem then the inabilty to properly socialize. You can not have a mate if you can not socialize. Yes, there is someone who can work with me somewhere in the world. I do not mind pleasing a mate, but I am sure many will find it a problem that they can not please me. Still, there has to be a female that can work with me someplace. My current age is 28 by the way. Again, thanks for the kind thoughts
@Prelude610 I agree with you - but I still think that evolution does have a purpose (as does all living things): To adapt, grow, expand, gain knowledge/learn, survive, pass on DNA. Repeat. Otherwise we simply would not be able to survive. We would not learn from our mistakes. Our sheer ability to learn is a prime example of evolution in action. -Touch the stove. -Stove burns. -Stove is very hot, painful, destructive. -Do not touch the stove again. OR -Use protective gloves.
@shiftplusone80: Good point about the other ideologies. Racism, extreme nationalism are signs of insecurity as well so it often comes down to men being insecure and weak, trying to make themselves feel better with ideologies that tell them they are superior in one way or the other. Good that you found a way out of this. Shows that you are now a more confident, real man. ^_^
@InariNoSasuke Part 3. Naturally, everyone is attracted to everyone on some deep level. Otherwise we wouldn't be able to tell if someone was ugly, attractive, or of the same/opposite sex. We are programmed to scan other beings for attractions or flaws, because we are seeking to reproduce and be with a companion that resonates the same attraction (or commond bond). So naturally everyone is somewhat "omnisexual".
@mindprism I'd agree that the point where a species identifies itself different than others is interesting and perhaps there's even research on that. But even in the example you gave with chimps, non-predatory mammals actually have an instinct to help the young of others, and I think there are examples of humans raised in the wild as well. This tendency is even taken advantage of by some species, "brood parasites."
I used to be a Catholic too, but then I took a moment to think.
