Relevant In 2020? Blackmagic Pocket Orig

Фильм және анимация

One of my favorite cameras I own is my original Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera. Today, I want to post this loveletter to the OG Pocket Cam. Wait...stop sneering just because I'm a "corporate" filmmaker :)
Yes, it chews through batteries and, yes, it ONLY shoots 1080p...and yes, the Pocket Cam doesn't have XLR inputs, but the quality of the footage and the lessons I've learned in using this camera really helped me step up to the "film" stage of my career. I learned how to work with true log footage, and achieve cinematic looks with this camera that really opened my mind to what I could accomplish through a color grade. Your opinions of my work may vary. 😜
What's more, you can pick up a used Pocket Camera for $400-$500 if you know where to look. Check out the video as I talk more about that.
So if you'll indulge me, please check out this week's video and appreciate the platonic love between a man and his camera. Drop me some thoughts in the comments...but be kind...I'm still new at this.
XOXO
Scott

@@hartmanscott Today, I have moved freedom a little further. The MFT mount on the camera is bad for me because my glasses are a good old Zeiss C-mount (small, fast, sharp and quite cheap). C-mount / MFT reductions are not good and the lenses vibrates when focusing), it is not a tight connection like PLmount. So today I created a version of the BMPCC camera - Cmount. I have a new front of the camera and it's great, I don't have to adjust my Zeiss glass to the MFT and I don't need a c-MFT reducer. I adjusted the camera. It' is perfect, solid, accurate and better than MFT. I am very happy. It worked better than I expected.

Agreed. I use this camera with a set of Kern c-mount prime lenses. I bought a small battery plate for the top and ran the cable through the cage. I use a light meter with hard stop NDs. I never even touch the menu. I think trying to use this camera with a metabones adapter and big heavy lenses really defeats the purpose.

Hi there! For the Star Wars stuff, I used the Panasonic LUMIX 12-35mm f1.8. It’s the Panasonic four thirds equivalent to a 24-70mm. For KZread, I don’t do anything that fancy. I use the setting in Final Cut Pro for “Computer.” This generates an MP4 file with a bit rate of about 20mbps. That’s going to make you a pretty good KZread file. There are 100 different ways to do this, but that setting is very reliable for me.

Fidget Video Media that’s a bummer. I have a plastic 14-42 and I’ve always found that to be pretty capable but a little finicky in terms of what fStops are sharp. With my lens, I usually lock it at about 5.6 and then use an ND filter when I am outside. Or if inside, you may have to REALLY hit your subject with a lot of light and either use an ND inside or try to darken the image in post. The OG pocket camera sensor needs a LOT of light to produce its best images. The histogram isn’t very good but I’d definitely try to keep even a darker scene as close to the middle as you can.

They are inexpensive and have large capacities and come with a full size SD adaptor. I shot all the Disney stuff on those cards in ProRes HQ and it worked like a charm. It's a SmallRig half cage for the original Blackmagic Pocket Camera. I"m not sure how widely available they are right now. But it's a great little cage.

@@hartmanscott I bought a bmpcc again after selling it in 2014. Got a full smallrig cage for it but half-cage looks very neat! Thank you for the video and inspiration!

It's this little half cage from Small Rig. I love it...keeps the overall form factor small, but let's you expand when necessary...I just leave it on there. I don't think they make it anymore, but i"ll poke around and try to find a link.
