Relaxing Overnight Stay at Sigüenza's Haunted Castle

We escape Madrid to head for the magical medieval town of Siguenza - which is dominated by a massive 12th century castle! Yoly and I spent a "romantic" weekend exploring the town, eating and drink (how much pig's ear can one eat?) and checking out all the nooks and crannies of the massive medieval castle that looms over the town. Did we mention the castle is haunted? Venga, let’s go! 🥝

Quite pro trip: You can get to Siguenza by train from Madrid (about 90 minutes each way) Check Renfe.com
Also here is our guide Jorge's website. Keep in mind he only does tours in Spanish. www.visitasguiadassiguenza.es/
Yoly and I had been to Siguenza once before about a million years ago. I remember wandering the beautiful old streets, and eating a delicious lunch somewhere. But it was distant in our memory.
So we decided it was time to go back. This is a little known day trip out of Madrid. Only 90 minutes away by train. Or you can stay longer and stay in the INCREDIBLE Parador hotel on the hill.
So that's what we did.
What does one do in Siguenza? Eat, drink, wander, chill out. This Guadalajara, which is not an extremely populated part of Spain. It's an area that was a frontier land between the Christians and the Moors during the Reconquest. But the landscape has this wonderful rough beauty - hot hot hot in summer, cold in winter.
And the Parador is a gorgeous place to hole up for a weekend. Wandering the castle's halls, hanging in the bar, reading in the throne room.
Once you do start to explore more, check out Bar Ratón - clearly popular with the locals (they have more than pig's ear) and also Bar Tormes for the perdigacho.
And so the key things to do are:
- Explore the Parador (even if you're not staying there, you can wander the impressive common rooms)
- The Cathedral - massive and imposing (for such a small town)
- Wander the magical old streets
- Have a fino seguntino (the local drink - vermouth, beer and sweet soda) in the Plaza Mayor
- Have a drink in Cafe Paris
- Have a drink in Taberna el Arrabal - the oldest still running bar in the town
- Check out the modern restaurant (Nola), and also the two Michelin star restaurants in the area - El Doncel and Molino de Alcuneza Restaurante (both closed when we were there)
WHO ARE WE? 🥝

James. Realmente me emociona.

My wife and I drove around Siguenza in 2018, coming from Cuenca through the Guadalajara Sierra. We were on our way to stay in El Burgo de Osma for a holiday in the region. This part of the country is not visited by many foreigners but is quintessentially Spanish or, more accurately, Castilian. In order to explore these places you really need a car but they are absolutely worth it. Tons of history and beautiful landscapes. Every small town has a spectacular castle, monastery or church. The Paradores are good but expensive. I tend to visit them just to have a drink and look around before spending the night in something a lot cheaper. Worth doing for a romantic weekend though. Cheers James and Yoli

No obstante, Spanish people like me ( ( I’m from BCN ) also have soooo much to learning about Spain inland ( ( speciallly countries as Leon, North Castile, Cantabria, Galicia or Asturias ). Sois muy simpáticos . Saludos, afectuosamente! ❤️

Hi James, "The Cruel" was only the nickname given by his enemies. His loyal followers think he was the "Justice Man" precisely because of all the nobles he order to kill. His marriage was a treatry between Castile and France and Blanca's father broke it not paying all the dowry to Peter, so he refuses to consider himself as married and, probably, ordered to kill his wife… because he was in love with, and also have children, another woman...

About 20 years ago I spent a night in the Parador de Siguenza. Beautiful building, great location, delicious cuisine. My only caveat is that in many years of travel, hundred of hotel stay, this is the only place where I have ever run into bedbugs. That doesn't prejudice me against Paradores since I have stayed in around 30 of them and would recommend them highly.

James, my boyfriend & I went to Sigüenza over the weekend & loved it! Only one complaint: we bought a small bag of chocolate truffles from the cloistered nuns thinking, " James & Yolo didn't make that big a deal about them, how good can they be?" Holy cow!! Best chocolate I've ever had! We went back for more, but they had closed and we needed to head back home to Madrid ☹️

Great work, so touchy. I,ve been there recently with my wife. No sign of doña Blanca, poor little thing, but instead we saw the "doliente ánima", the ghost of a black friar, an imponent aparition, sitting at the second floor hall gazing with hawkly eyes. You have my word, the word of a spaniard gentleman. Great pic of Castilla, the soul of the stone and anvil, le chant du givre et du loup, if you pardon my "parlevu" Keep the good times flowing, my friends. Congrats

Hola Jaime y Yoli, just finished watching your new video. Enjoyed every minute. We're looking forward to our 7 month stay, starting in April, in Andalusia with our first time No Lucrativa Visa. You have inspired us with your series of videos in Spain to spend a lot of time in your beautiful country. We will be looking for a place to settle that will accommodate our adventures throughout the country. Semana Santa we travel to Sevilla for the festival. Hoping to see you there? Thanks again and Great Job. PS: Any suggestions on other festivals in Andalucia would be very helpful.
