Refrigerator Thermostat Not Working: Diagnosis & Repair or Emergency Fix No More Spoiled Food

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

When the thermostat is not working, your freezer is too cold or not cold at all. How do you diagnose or fix it? If you can't fix it, while waiting for the arrival of a new part, how do you manually make coldness so that your food is not spoiled? If the thermostat is always disconnected then the freezer is not cold at all, if thermostat is always connected then the freezer would be super cold. Some other components in a refrigerator such as the compressor may also contribute to the problem if the freezer is not cold. Check out this video: • Refrigerator Compresso...
As shown in the video, thermostat problem can be easily checked. It is possible you may fix the thermostat problem. If you are not able to fix it, and waiting for the arrival of a new thermostat, then the video also provides bypass option so that your food is not spoiled.

The freezer won't get cold enough because of the cold garage temps during fall/winter. I see that there are garage kits for Kenmore refrigerator models manufactured after 2001...but what about refrigerators made prior? Mine is very similar to the one in this video. Can someone please help? There has to be some kind of way to trick the thermostat so my freezer works during the winter. Thanks!

Great video! I have a very similar thermostat and once I removed the contact part a U-shaped spring fell out. I carefully watched your video and I do not see it in your disassembly. There's also a small metal plate that's touching the adjustment screw in the middle of the contact part. I can see it in your video at first but then you seem to lose it. I'm sure these two parts are not random: the plate that was against the adjustment screw and the U-shaped spring but I cannot figure out how they fit together during re-assembly. Hi Genius Asian! My 23 year old GE FUF17DACRWH upright freezer runs all the time, very very cold, like 15 degrees below zero Fahrenheit. Must be the old mechanical temp control shorting but WR09X10014 is no longer available. What should I look for when I take the control apart to try and repair it? If you don't think I can repair a shorting unit, I might try to fit a generic one in there, like a WR9X499 and use my mechanic and metal working tools to secure it and make it fit. Thank you!

  • @GeniusAsian

yes, if it is the old mechanical temp control, it is just "on" and "off", you should have no problem fitting a generic one. To repair it, you to know what is the fault. Use a multi-meter to test to find out. Once you locate the problem, it should not be hard to find the best fix. good luck.

  • @GeniusAsian

since refrig needs to be very accurate on a very wide range of temperature, it is difficult to have a universal measurement. For example, it is very easy to produce universal standard light bulbs because you only have one 110V voltage to worry about. But Software is configured to read a specific temperature curve, whether the curve of thermal couple is a result of mechanical or electronic, the curve is not linear. Different manufacture may use different control unit, which may measure voltage drop via converter or could measure the resistance. The results would be quite different. So you can not even use the thermo made for one brand to replace that of the other. In addition, even though thermistor failure is common, it is still not as frequent as light bulb, so the technical solution chosen need to be cheap as well as long lasting.

  • @GeniusAsian

as shown in the video, the copper strip has a hole in the center, the contact is the Platinum contact which filled the copper hole. So when you squeeze the platinum circle, since the platinum is soft (it is softer than 14k gold), the platinum expanded to better fill the hole, thus making a good connection
