    I just repaired my 25+ year old fridge with the help of your video, thank you so much for uploading it and explaining every step so well. I have no clue about repairing appliances but you made it easy, thank you for saving me a bunch of repair cost or even worse buying a new fridge and in addition making me feel very good accomplishing this job. A 65 year old woman :-)

    Great easy do it yourself fix. I was sure ready to buy another refrigerator but you saved me. I'm proud of myself for being able to do it, with your help, of course. You saved me a lot of money. The local appliance guy knew which part I needed by describing it to me, you provided the how to, and I furnished the labor. What a great team we are!!!!!!!!

    Your are great, helping us to fight against planned obsolescence. In case it helps others, my replacement thermostat had the two electrical connectors at the same level, so I couldn't put the black one on top and the orange one on the bottom. The orange and the black wires can be swapped, so it doesn't matter where you connect them. The thermostat is just a contact (or not) between the wires, so the polarity doesn't matter. But of course the ground (green/yellow) must be connected to the proper pin (on the other side of the thermostat).

    Great video! Thanks mill for the instructions... I got an estimate to fix my fridge for $450. I read Whirlpool's troubleshooting guide, order a replacement thermostat online for $90, and then followed the steps you show in this video. It took me a grand total of an hour to git'er done and that's only because I had a hard time finding a 1/4" socket to remove some of the screws that don't have groove for screwdriver in my tools shed, otherwise it would have been 30 min.I saved $360 in the process. Thanks again

    Hey Matt, Thank you for the well produced, easy to understand video! It made taking care of the job on my own very easy and straight forward. Although the Thermostat was $103 here in BC Canada, I saved a ton on service fee's. For those interested in analyzing what their potential problem could be, the first sign of an issue for me was that the water dispenser suddenly stopped working. The compressor sounded fine and was running okay and there was a nice cool flow from the vent in the back corner of the fridge, but it didn't take long to realize that the items in the side-by-side fridge were freezing. Pop got slushy, the milk turned rock hard in the carton as did apples on the top shelf. Of course the compressor was running continually since the Thermostat wasn't making it shut off and that's why the water stopped working in the door (since the line froze) and then the fridge side items froze. Since this was discovered at night I had to wait until the next day to take care of it so that gave me time to find this video while in the meantime I flipped the breaker for the fridge so it didn't keep running all night long. Not to mention that I thought the freezing could possibly end up making the water line in the fridge expand and blow causing a leak somewhere. I knew everything would be okay in the fridge over night without power. Matt's video comfortably convinced me that the Thermostat was the culprit so I went out today, bought one and easily installed it. The fridge is running perfectly now. Mine is a side by side Maytag with cooling control sliders underneath the thermostat housing rather than turn knobs like the one Matt is working on although I can see that the set up is very similar. Because of the control slider being connected to the thermostat I assume it's more than the one Matt shows us here. I think $100 is way too much for a part like this but what can you do? My Fridge is a side-by-side Maytag and the Thermostat part number is: 2315562 Couldn't be a more simple job that can be done by a novice in half an hour with a few basic tools. Don't think you can't do it and don't be so lazy as to call a repairman for this quick fix. Thanks Matt! AAA+++

    Mentioned previously but worth putting at the top again - many replacement thermostats have the electrical connectors in a front/back orientation versus the original top/bottom. The two electrical wires are interchangeable so it doesn't matter which goes where, as long as the ground wire goes on the ground connector. Also, the most time consuming/tedious/delicate part is putting the plastic tube back over the metal capillary tube. Helped to have a latex glove for a little grip and keeping dexterity. Second most tedious part is the two silver phillips screws that don't mount the thermostat housing to the panel....those two mount the motherboard to the panel and are a true joy to get back in right.

    Very helpful video. I would just add that my web search for the part, at the site shown in the lower r/h of this video, had the part selling in the $100 range. There were several options on Amazon of the exact part for under $15. I paid around $14 and it came with a new capillary tube installed. Mine has been installed and is working great. Also worth noting is that after watching this video and visiting the site mentioned above, (but BEFORE going to Amazon), I received spam email referencing this repair. I did NOT provide my email although my KZread feed is associated with the address that the spam showed up in.

    I was rescuing my food after my fridge conked out on me and as I was emptying the top shelf to transfer the food over to my vintage kegerator fridge, I bumped the housing with this thermostat in it and the compressor kicked back on and actually cooled the unit down to operating temp! It seems to have failed again overnight, but I smacked it again this morning and the compressor kicked on again, so it hopefully is this temp control unit. Better to try the cheap fixes before spending the skrilla to buy a whole new unit. Thanks for the clear instructional video Matt!

  • @mdemers767

    @@Paul-zm1hb- Smacking it lasted long enough to find the part I needed at a reasonable price, which was about a week, then another week for delivery, and probably a few more days til I had the time to plan for and do the job, which only took me maybe 45 minutes. Getting the fridge and freezer temps calibrated was kind of a PITA, and took a bit of fiddling around with it. The temp of the freezer affects the temp of the fridge, so if you make an adjustment to one, you have to also make an adjustment to the other, so it took maybe a week to get them both dialed in to where they should be, but it's been working well for a couple years now, knock on wood! Having a digital fridge thermometer helped a lot.

    My temp control has red wire on top and orange wire on bottom. No double black wires. I've changed out the relay, overload and now this thermostat to get my fridge to stay cool. If I still have problems with fridge getting too warm and compressor/condenser not starting soon enough to keep it cooler, I'll look at the capacitor next I guess. Hopefully this is the final part that fixed it. Great instructions!

    Notes: When you MOUNT your fridge temperature control, take note that you put the BRACKET behind the temperature control and the metal "ears" in front because the screws screw into the sheet metal of the bracket and that's what it catches on, NOT the metal ears of the temperature control knob. Also be aware that on this type of refrigeration system, is doesn't use a temperature sensor near the damper motor like many models do. It's an older model, so it uses a capillary tube which moves liquid through it based on temperature, which assumingly puts pressure on some metal contacts. This is a little bit assumption on my part already but think of the temperature control knob as a means of putting a certain amount of "preload" on the metal contacts, in other words, drawing the metal contacts nearer or farther away depending on how soon you want the switch to close based on the fluid pressure. Note that the bracket that holds the fridge temperature control knob also holds the freezer temperature control knob.

    We have a kenmore 106.41512101 sidexside. I just replaced this cold control and the defrost timer. Along with the defrost thermal sensor on the evaporator and did not see much ice or frost on the evaporator. Compressor will go off after a number of hours but still running more often than I remember doing and freezing veggies at the lower bins in fridge section. Wondering if you could confirm that the freezer control knob pictured here is a manual operation for the damper control? I don’t see that this is an automatic damper from inside of the freezer on ours and It does open an close that vent area with the knob. Any thoughts on what I could change next or test that makes sense? Could not find the control board for the evap. and sensors for the fridge yet unless it’s by the Compressor.? Thanks so much for you help!

    If too much of the bulb at the end of the tube is exposed because the capillary cover is not pulled up just to the very end of it but some of it sticks out, will that affect how the thermostat works in a major way? If there was a kink or sharp bend and you unbend it, is it still going to be ruined and must be kept hollow inside or it won't work? When you order the part, does it come already calibrated to work for the particular refrigerator and will not work in any other nor will any other part number be calibrated to work in place of it? How does the freezer control cool down if it does not have a thermostat behind that knob on the left, the thermostat being only behind the refrigerator control? I am trying to better understand what I would be getting myself into by DIY - thanks.

    The capillary tube is what helps controls the temperature. You don't want to wrap it around anything. If you are installing a new cold control you will want to install it the same way the old one was installed.

    I ran into the same problem. The new stat contacts were marked L and C. I assumed that L might refer to Line power, so I tested leads and the orange wire was hot. I connected orange to L and the red to C. Everything seems to be working well.

    @@appliancepartsprosThe Kenmore Model number is 106.71982101. The Fridge only cycles on and off on the lowest (warmest) setting of number 1 (notrmally we ran in in the middle on number 3). Set any higher (then 1) and it seems to stay on all the time as far as I can tell. I don't know where the end on the capillary tube is going to as it disappears behind the roof panel of the lower Frig compartment. I am guessing it goes behind the rear freezer panel by the Evaporator fan and coils. Thanks in advance if you can share where the capillary tube goes to on my unit that would be great and I can buy the correct thermostat. Phil

    Desperate! I have almost identical model to the one shown. Symptom: intermittent no cooling -- motors - fans not coming on UNLESS I SMACK AROUND THE CONTROL PANEL WITH MY FIST. NO KIDDING! It may takes one or two smacks, but the fans then come on and cooling is normal in both freezer and fridge. The refrigerator may run most of the day, but I walk into the kitchen and hear no fans. So I open the door and smack it over or under the control panel. I have already replaced the cold control - thermostat unit and the timer twice. Symptom is always the same. If not caught in time the ice begins melting and the inside fridge gets warm. Otherwise cooling is normal. HELP!

    skeleman1963 It could be a cold control or a damper. The damper is the part that lets the cold air go from the freezer to the refrigerator section. You can go to our website and enter your model number to view the parts breakdowns, look at 03 controls, to see the control parts. I can say from experience that it is not difficult to slip the plastic tubing on in one piece. Straighten both out before starting and just slide it on, just takes a few minutes to do it right. If you needed to you could put a little dish soap on it.

The freezer is super cold

  • @appliancepartspros

    7808y If the thermostat failed with the contacts open it would not cool. If it failed with the contact stuck closed it would cool all the time. You can test it with a meter. It could also be stuck it the defrost cycle and not cooling. This will involve some some trouble shooting it is best to post the problem along with the appliance model number on our repair forum and the techs can help you find out the problem.

    Thanks for video. Don't understand: stuck contacts makes it always on and shorted out contacts makes it not turn on. Isn't stuck the same as shorted? Wouldn't shorting contacts make it always on? Can I test it by forcing it always on by shorting out the tabs? (I assume pulling wire off either tab would make compressor always off.)

  • @appliancepartspros

    @appliancepartspros

    There are contacts inside the control that open and close to regulate the temperature. They usually fail by sticking together, which would make it run all the time or the contacts corrode/fail and contact is not made so it does not run. Maybe saying shorted out confused the issue as it is not technically a short. Sometimes the control is in the state where it has almost completely failed, that is when moving it or tapping on it may make it work again for awhile. You can test it for continuity, it should not have continuity when off and it should when it is on. You can also post the problem along with the appliance model number on our repair forum and the techs can help you troubleshoot the problem. forum.appliancepartspros.com/

    Thanks. The thermostat was intermittent, I disconnected the two wires to it and shorted them together with a wire. That made it run so I ordered a new thermostat. btw, amana's odd in that the control thermostat is on the deepfreeze side. And it's 120v, if anyone tries above, unplug and make sure a jumper wire touches nothing else.

    This helped me replace the part, but for some reason the freezer knob will not fit onto the control. I line up the thin piece and the wide piece, but just will not go on no matter how hard I push. If I stick the knob in it allows me to spin the control, so I just set it where it needs to be, but do you know why this is happening?

  • @XImpaler420X

    @XImpaler420X

    XImpaler420X Actually I think I know the problem. The video has you put the knobs on after you re-mount the control panel, but they should be put on when the control panel is still hanging free so you can apply pressure to the back of the unit.

  • @appliancepartspros

    XImpaler420X At 6:15 in the video it shows putting the screws in from underneath. These hold the entire control bracket assembly in place so it cannot move around, make sure you have those screws installed. Hope the video helped you get the refrigerator fixed!
