Reel Drag Tightening While Fighting A Fish? This May Help You Fix It!

Спорт

If your reel drag tightens by itself while fighting a fish, there is a good chance this video will help you figure out why. I made this same mistake when I first got into reel repair and I figured others may have done the same thing or maybe you bought a used reel with this problem.

    My humble views on the subject. Indeed a very interesting one that anglers should think about. Actually your spool turns in the anti clock direction when line comes off the spool, and when you tighten the drag knob, it tightens the drag in the clock wise direction. The eared washer sits in the middle of the stack and moves in the same direction as the spool, while the other two metal washers on the drag stack are keyed to the main shaft (all the metal washers are inter spaced with felt, teflon or carbon drag washers). Since the main shaft is always stationary (does not rotate), the two keyed washers also remain stationary, but the eared washer which locks into the spool in the middle of the stack, rotates with the spool. So as the drag is tightened down, the keyed washers press the drag washers from the top and bottom of the stack to create friction against the eared washer in the middle of the stack which is turning while line is being pulled (and the spool is turning in the anti clock wise direction). So if you placed the eared washer to the top, i.e instead of in the middle of the stackdefinitely cause the drag to malfunction by not providing the required friction in the middle of the stack.

    One other note is that some spools on older reels turn the opposite direction when drag is pulled out. The Mitchell 300 is one example that the line pickup moves in the opposite direction from modern spinning reels but there are others as well.

    And clockwise verses counterclockwise depends on your perspective. If you are looking at it from the front or from behind the reel. The drag knob tightens clockwise from the front, as drag is pulled off the spool rotates in the clockwise direction looking at the reel from same view as the drag knob, so it causes the knob to tighten more when the metal washers aren't positioned properly.

    It depends on the reel, they are all made a little different. There should be some sort of tabbed or otherwise odd shaped washer in your drag stack that isolates the movement of the spool from the spool nut. You can try searching for an exploded parts diagram for your reel model online. Just type in the reel model and schematic and you will usually be able to find a parts diagram. For example "Shakespeare 2400 schematic". Try looking at the parts diagram to see if you can find the proper order of the drag washers.

    Do you use grease on the washers?

  • @TheFishingHobby

    @TheFishingHobby

    5 жыл бұрын

    I do on carbon fiber but it isn't necessary. If you need full stopping power on carbon fiber washers, run them dry. If you like to use lighter settings with carbon fiber, add a little grease. I oil felt drag washers and I run Teflon drag washers dry. The drag washers in this reel are some sort of fiber washers (not carbon fiber) and I run them dry. These are just the ways I like to do my washers, but everyone has different opinions as to what works best for them too...there probably isn't a right or wrong way as long as it works for you 👍

    Hi! I’m having a problem with 2 of my reels. When drag is pulled, the spool wobbles quite badly, you can tell the spool isn’t spinning correctly. I haven’t taken them apart either. Can you please help me

  • @TheFishingHobby

    It's really hard to say for sure without looking at it personally. If the spool is wobbly, it could be the spool oscillation shaft is bent or something in the spool has broken or is out of place. Is your spool a top push button release spool or do you have to remove the drag knob to remove the spool?

    The Fishing Hobby shimano ultegra 2500 is a little bit worse wobble than my shimano Sahara 2500.

  • @TheFishingHobby

    @TheFishingHobby

    3 жыл бұрын

    I'd check part number 11077 in this schematic: www.reelschematic.com/wp-content/uploads/schematics/Shimano/Ultegra/Shimano%20Ultegra%20ULT2500HGFB.pdf Make sure it is seated completely in the groove it is supposed to be in. Same thing in the other reel. When the drag is pulled the spool simply spins around the oscillation shaft. The two parts are a fairly loose fit so that the spool can spin independent of the shaft when drag is pulled. Because of that loose fit, if the spool of off center more to one side when the drag is pulled out, it will cause some wobble. You can correct that somewhat by watching the spool wobble. There will be a high side and a low side as it rotates. Look for that, pick the spot where the high side moves to the top (nearest the reel foot), stop it there and loosen the drag knob and push the spool down just a bit and tighten the drag knob back down. Recheck and adjust as needed. Some wobble won't really matter, but you can try to correct it like I suggested if it bothers you.

  • @TheFishingHobby

    It isn't just crossfire reels that this could happen with. There are thousands of different spinning reels over the years this could happen with but it would be an owner working on their reel drag system putting the drag washer stack back in the wrong order that would cause this problem.

    It is hard for me to say what it is without seeing it in person. It sounds like the spool may not be sitting low enough on the oscillation shaft. How is the oscillation shaft made? Does it have a pin through the shaft with a grove in the spool that the pin sits in or does it have a gear on the oscillation shaft for the drag clicker? Are their any bearings in the spool itself? If so, they may not be fully seated in their bore.

    The first thing I would do is look at the oscillation shaft and make sure that the gear is bottomed out in the flat area/protruding part of the shaft. I have seen some that want to get hung up on the shaft before it gets as low as it should be. Next, make sure the clicker pawl under the spool isn't sitting on top of the clicker gear when you put the spool on keeping it from going all the way down. Hopefully it is one of those two things!
