Redefining the Indian Myths and Beliefs about Menstruation | Rhythm Rastogi | TEDxSayajigunj

Rhythm Rastogi is an 18 year old high school graduate from Vadodara, Gujarat. Since the past four years she has been working in the field of menstrual hygiene awareness for young girls and women and has been coined as the 'Padgirl of Vadodara' for her efforts in spreading knowledge to over 300 females of the city. She has been recognised by various media channels, news outlets and celebrities for her work. Rhythm aims to dissipate the stigmas surrounding menstruation and propogate it as a healthy and normal process. Rhythm Rastogi is an 18 year old high school graduate from Vadodara, Gujarat. The idea is to talk about menstruation as a normal process rather than burdening it with stigmas and taboos. I'd redefine the myths and source Indian beliefs and discuss solutions or common things young students don't know. @madye_tejas7488

@vasudha kay Ma'am there is a reason for not allowing in the kitchen, just don't falsely think these are superstitions. During menstruation the heat in a women’s body increases than usual. ( You can check the temperature early in the morning as soon as you wake up. There would a degree increase in temperature during periods than other days). This happens as the egg breaks down the uterus destroying the wall and this is thrown out as blood. In order to build the uterus wall again, the body begins its work immediately. For this as we all know, the body needs energy. Heat is a form of energy. It is seen in many households till today that women are not allowed to touch pickle or cook during their periods. Have you ever kept food outside for long during summer months? What happens when it is kept out for long? It spoils. right? The reason is heat. The temperature during summer is more which leads to increase in the bacterial activities. When placed out for long time, this bacteria will eventually make your food stale. The pickles used to contain a lot of salt, and too much intake of salt is known to cause water retention in the body. During periods most of the women experience uncomfortable bloating. If they ate these salty pickles during this time, it’ll just worsen their condition. This is not just conducive to menstruating women alone. One is told to enter the kitchen and touch food only after taking bath in the morning, after cooling the body. Our ancestors were too smart and generous. Every custom made, had a reason tagged to it which worked well according to the time and place. But eventually things took a turn for bad and people merely started following the rituals blindly, without trying to comprehend the reason or modifying the ritual as per the time. This basically happened with the fall of Vedic era. And I don't know why we all try to see our religion, culture and tradition from a western point of view, our Vedic knowledge was much more advance and scientific than theirs. Hope u understood the reason, not trying to teach you anything but just wanting to make people aware that our culture NEVER said a woman in her periods is impure.

I refuse to believe that a civilization of people who can calculate cosmic distances could be complete idiots about a phenomenon that is so integral for life. There has to be some conventional scientific reason for traditional practices which were corrupted and got associated with taboo.

As much as I agree with u, even if u improve the level of awareness , people with low income have hard time providing 2 meals a day to their family let alone buying a sanitary pad packet. Sanitary napkins are not affordable to all economic strata in India which is a shame. The problem mainly lies in the cost of these products. If these were cheaply available, lot more women would be willing to buy disposable sanitary products.

It's alright if girl doesn't have a period bag from birth. No one covers this kind of topics. Soon I'll start talking about this topics with 6th standard girls by visiting schools to aware them at early age.

The fact that I am having periods, and so my mom is asking me to not go to the kitchen, not eat here, there and a few more. Also, she said that if I don't believe in these shits, then the society might not accept me. When I grow up, my husband wouldn't let me in, cuz I dont believe or follow these rules. But can I just ask why? Periods are normal. Even if you ppl are educated it doesn't actually means that you're educated until you take these things normal, and make others understand that it's normal. But I truly say that if it's like that, then I aint ever gonna understand or trust in these shits cuz its useless and also I am gonna oppose it. I literally don't care what the society says, even if they boycott me, I will be happy cuz I wouldn't like to live in a society where things are being complicated and still the ppl having such thinking. Tbh I am losing trust over my own country now, cuz of these things happening.

Some people will be of the opion that this is not the realities of every women in India and how most people now don't follow these traditions. Notice how i used the words "most people do not follow these traditions" that means we live in 21st century and yet the normal biological process of approximately 50% of the world is considered unholy. Its a myth that these traditions are only followed by illiterate and low income people. I am from kerala and everyone in my family are educated and are working, including my grandparents and my neighbors. Yet still when a girl or women get her period they are subjected to complete isolation. Some ppl pointed out that these pratices began as a boon for girls. As in older times these islotions gave the women a chance to rest and take of themselves. For them please do answer my question, how is shutting someone in one room and not allowing them to dine with you is a boon? Its not an unknown fact that during menstruation all girls and women have to deal with alot of hormonal changes and so they are mentally and emotionally vulnerable, so please imagine a situation when a 11 years old is kept in isolation and continusly tell her touch is impure, so she can't touch anything, have you got any idea how that will effect her emotionally... it could cause her to more depression and even trigger suicidal thought.... fun fact a huge proportion of women who commit suicide are when they r on their periods. Please dont think i am insulting or targeting anyone or anything... this is the stuff i have to go through dispite being from a privileged section of the society. I am just showing you that this is not right, just because something was followed in our past doesn't mean its right. In my home periods is considered more dangerous and contagious than covid 19.. because they use more precautions on me than when they go out these days... these days for ppl who have beaten covid 19 they give counseling sessions to get rid the trauma, but what do an average women get after she is subjected 5 years of isolation from her family because a women on an average spends 5 years of her life mensurating.

People need to know that it's natural to have periods for healthy female reproduction further down the lane and also the scientific facts that it is associated periods like energy radiating while having periods is a negative one and shouldn't be spread to living beings since it affects them or if a person during periods should not take a shower cuz that blood that is meant to be excreted out should not be circulated which happens while taking a shower.... And those who think shower does not induces blood circulation.... Hot temperatures increases kinetic energy of the molecules of the blood and that's why you bleed more in a hot sunny day or when you're exercising and a shower does exactly this and it also circulates this blood evenly throughout the body which makes you feel fresh and rejuvenated but what is meant to be excreted out is circulated instead.... Proper fact check needs to be inculcated when spreading awareness about topics like these.

So pathetic that our generation just sweeps out all orthodox practices as myths just because they are not accepted or proven by today's western science. I request everyone here to please watch the Rtu vidya talk by Sinu Joseph.

Yes Karishma ji. Women must see sinu Joseph's videos and refer Ritu vIdya to understand what Menstruation actually is. Modern women emotionally (because of their suffering) dismiss the cultural practices as myths and taboos without even understanding them practically. Let's hope that people will understand them one day or the other day....

the girl is not redefining any Indian Myths and beliefs, she is talking with half-knowledge. Years back, Girls are left isolated during menstruation so that they need not to do household chores, they can get enough rest. These days most of the people are not following any traditions. But this girl is not telling the reasons behind the traditions.Last 3 min is all good to listen

Leaving someone isolated is emotionally traumatic. Making a young girl getting her first period get left away from her family is traumatic. If a girl or woman is suffering from cramps and exhaustion, yes, she should rest. But forced isolation? Forbidding her from entering the kitchen? Or the temple? Making her feel unclean? What's good or right about that?

@@mitalichinmulgund8679 Ma'am first you need to understand that these not superstitions or restrictions for woman in her periods. When a girl is in her periods, the heat in her body increases. This happens as the egg breaks down the uterus destroying the wall and this is thrown out as blood. In order to build the uterus wall again, the body begins its work immediately. For this as we all know, the body needs energy. Heat is a form of energy. During menstruation the heat in a women’s body increases than usual. ( You can check the temperature early in the morning as soon as you wake up. There would a degree increase in temperature during periods than other days). Our body is governed by three main doshas which include Vata - regulating movement (air) Pitta - transferring of elements (bile) Kapha - providing strength, regulating heat and energy in the body (fire) A slight deviation or fluctuation in any of these can cause major changes. These changes are too subtle to identify but take up major portions of our system. During menstruation the amount of kapha increases in body leading to excess of energy. This turns the form into a energy ball which is later on used during ovulation. The pushing out of blood is characterized by vata and any fluctuation in vata can lead to menstrual disorders too. This flow of vata or energy is downward during menstruation. Whereas in temples while circumbulating the garbha gruha energy flows upward in the body. This can gradually turn the flow of energy from downward to upward thereby blocking the free flow of pitta. These can lead to cramps and hormonal fluctuations in body. Talking about the temples, most religious chants(prarthana, bhajan, aarti)are meant to balance out the energies in our body. However, this would interfere with the natural losing of energy that must happen in menstruating women to prevent excessive energy build-up. Hence, menstruating women are told to keep away during such occasions, so that their natural processes are not tampered with. And in our Hindu culture and tradition WE NEVER CONSIDER A WOMEN IN HER PERIODS AS IMPURE, its the anti-Hindu people who just wanna satisfy their ego by defaming the Hindu culture. Our Vedic knowledge was much more advanced and scientific than the westerners. Hope u understood the reason, I am not trying to teach you anything but just want to make people aware that our culture NEVER said a woman in her periods is impure.

@@madye_tejas7488 @Tejas Madye unless you have been a woman who had been told that she can't have prasad, that she mustn't attend her own daughter's wedding, that she mustn't go close to the idol, you don't know what women go through. And thses are the milder examples. There are many who are made to stay in outhouses regardless of the weather and their health when they have their periods. If the heat in my body rises, as you say, it is still my choice to decide. Not someone else's right to dictate what I can or cannot do. The uterine wall is intact, the endometrium which has been built up is discarded. Not going to a temple doesn't prevent cramps, so that's a ridiculous thing to say. Yes, the tiredness increases because we are losing a lot of blood. But again, it is for every individual woman to decided what is best for her. Not for society to dictate. The women are still doing all the chores and office work or physical labour. Loads of energy is being lost. Going to a temple may infact provide a chance to rest. Again, it is her choice.

@@mitalichinmulgund8679 idk what to say to u .... the generation is just brainwashed by the westerners. No one is putting restrictions on the activities which a woman shouldn’t do in her periods.... these are prescriptions only. You may enter temples, cook food, eat or whatever u want to do. These are not superstitions, these are just prescriptions and not restrictions. There are many temples in India where men are not allowed to enter... those temples are completely taken care of by women. Our temples are not built anywhere and anyhow. The architectural design of temples are such that they are located as per the moon cycles, geometric energy source , where we experience a positive energy.... positive energy here means the energy which flows upwards... and not that women are impure or anything. So a woman in her periods may absorb more energy which is not good for her health. Every time just don’t use the women card everywhere, understand the reason behind it. Had these reasons been stated by the westerners, people like you would have followed them without even questioning. No one considers woman as impure in her periods. Had this been the case, then there would have been no Godess’ temples. Always using the woman card is not the solution

@@madye_tejas7488 first of all, I'm not using the woman card, but menstruation doesn't happen to men, so I really can't about them. But I am talking of my experience where I've been asked if I am on my periods when being given prasad, and friend's experiences where they haven't been allowed. I am not saying anything against temple architecture, that's another topic. But priests do object to women entering if they have their periods. I have seen it. It is also common knowledge that in some hindu communities she is made to stay alone in an outhouse, not supposed to cook for her husband during her periods (didn't what's his name politician make that stateme t that women who cook during their periods for their husbands will be reborn as dogs. This was less than a year ago. You may not say it, your family/neighbours may be better people, that doesn't mean it is not an issue.
