Yes. I am so lucky that my school is good enough to take around 2-3 workshops about periods when I was in grade 5. My teacher even drew a diagram of it.

Yes we make it a taboo right from the beginning by not including them in such sessions in school and talking about it in hushed voices at homes and then suddenly we want to them to normalise this and accept it but we need to understand it will take time for them too

Here's my two cents; this unspoken rule of not talking about your period is actually a major hindrance in day-to-day life. I remember being in class and starting my period, and not being excused to go to the bathroom because I was told to hold it. But you can't hold in a period, so I was sitting there, too embarrassed and basically unable to communicate what was really happening to my male teacher, and having my underwear spotted with blood by the time class was over. I don't just want periods to be talking about, I want them to a part of absolute normalcy. When I'm in a meeting, I want to be able to say that I just need to go get a tampon really quick as easily as saying that I've got a nosebleed and need to run and grab some tissues. No shame, no embarrassment, no period jokes, because when half of the population experiences this every month, it should not be such a big deal.

I agree. The education on menstruation is important for them as well also considering movies, webseries and songs are over exposing them to the concept of making out and stuff. They need to know the effects of their actions on there own and the girls life. It will help raise a well aware generation. Instead of making fun of girls in periods about mood swings, etc. They will be more considerate and contribute in making world a lil better place for the girls and themselves.

I agree boys should know too. I was 12 when i heard friends talking about bleeding to death. I ran home asked mum and she was clearly embarrassed. I was determined not to do the same with my daughter. We celebrated her first period even her father and brother got in on the act. I told her how special thks gift is. To be able to one day give birth.

Some things are important regardless of gender..!!

Both boys and girls should learn about periods when they're ten, before even the majority of early bloomers start getting them. That way girls aren't terrified that they're dying, and both genders are educated. Men need to interact with women and the overwhelming majority will have a sexual relationship with a woman at some point. They should be informed, both so they understand women better (and don't think women become irrational monsters on their periods, as some seem to think) and so they can educate female partners who don't know much about periods.

My grandmother sometimes asks me about my period like this: 'When you'll get sick this month?'. It's wierd, at first I didn't understand her, but now I undertand that in the past you just could say you were sick so anyone else would know about your period. Now that is changing. (Sorry for my bad english)

I grew up in the Netherlands, a pretty open country, but I only found out about periods from a book I read. The girl in it said something about 'menstruation' so I looked it up. My parents never told me anything, and school told me 'girls get periods', but nothing more. When I finally did learn more about it in school, I'd already been having my period for over a year.

urgent topic to talk?yess...Aditi is 100% right about low level of awareness related to menstruation. In Delhi along with seven other metro cities,SHARP NGO is running this initiative with the help of Unicharm India.

Sanaya Sanaya U r right. The most important thing is the religious taboo. I never followed them because I don't find any logic behind them, but everywhere I face harsh criticism from the girls even younger to me for praying and touching​ religious idols during periods. So useless and pathetic those "grandmother rules" are but only for the sake of stupid orthodox norms we are asked to follow them. Even mostly grandmothers don't know the rational reason behind those restrictions but still they believe that those norms should be followed. Girls and specially old aunts really need to be awaken.

When I was in 10th class I gave a speech on menstruation for my english elocution competition. My teachers, friends and students were surprised by my speech..... also some of my female friends asked me not to give a speech on menstruation. Atlast when it was time of prize distribution everyone was screaming my name but I didn't won because of my accent maybe but my principal and teachers appreciated me on stage for being confident and spoke about a taboo topic. Later my juniors, seniors, friends everyone appreciated me.

Coming from the south Asian culture I fully agree with the speaker. The ignorance about menstruation cycle is not a rural problem rather its an urban phenomenon as well. I was 26 when a female friend told me in detail about menstruation. Not just the young girls need to learn about it but also boys should learn so they won't make insensitive period jokes.

It is not a taboo for Chinese and that's why Athlete FU Yuanhui talked about this in Rio.When i was in China, I talked about this with my close friends and guys friends too. Everybody can understand that it is just physiological phenomenon and why it is shame to talk about. When I was in period, my boyfriend also treated me like a queen because he knew I am not comfortable and he took very good care of me specially in those days.

Alex Larson In an Italian family we are very open about Periods I can talk easily about it with my dad and they even get me stuff I need for it. in Italy when a girl gets her period they throw parties for them its awkward but also really fun because you get presents and everything. i feel really bad for the girls out there who don't get that around the world.

Yes, you are really great! Menstruation is a natural process, but in many Asian countries, people are reluctant to talk about it due to some sort of social restrictions (taboos). In human body, various changes are occurred at different ages; in the case of menstruation, it is a natural issue that is unique to females, on the other hand, males face some changes in their body too, so all these issues are extremely natural. With the school education system, it is so easy to educate these natural issues, so it is the ideal time now to be against these unrealistic taboos in our societies.

This is incredible. She has found a way to break down barriers and educate young girls (and boys!) about periods. So many ted talks are people talking about how things need to change, but she is actually doing something to affect change.

Thank you so much Aditi Gupta and TED. I'm almost going to tear. Because, in my country some families still have that taboo especially the mothers just like you said. When i first said my mom that i'm having a period, she slapped me. it's a traditional way to get the girls ready to their new life. But it's not the right way to do that. And also it seems like girl's life completely change when they start to have periods. Even it has a good intention, it is not perceive like that from the girls. After that I remember that i want to do the same thing to my daughter. When i grew up, İ get rid of that idea of course. But somewhere in the world some girls can't do that. So thanks a lot to you for trying to change this.

Thank you so much for such a valuable and inspirational video. I am a medico doing my MD in community medicine. My research is on adolescent girls , In which mensurational hygiene is one thing on which my research project is based upon. You won't believe, that not even the common ppl but the people from the medicine field also don't feel the need of this basic awareness among the community. My research proposal got rejected at the ethical committee meeting that this is a sensitive issue, this study should not be done. I almost got shocked that even in this era, where the advertisements about the use of sanitary napkins are so openly shared, they think that it is a sensitive issue. Finally I got approval on my research project, and this video came out to be a big inspiration to me.

Ure the best . . . I displayed your video in my (girl's) college in a projector and the whole college was delighted and curious and happy and satisfied to watch and learn and spread this thing. Our school used to take us for treks. I remember being shocked in class 4 when the accompanying teachers told us not to worry if you see blood and told us all about periods. Ironically some girls did get theirs. I have been one of those people to get it in class 8, and I was so excited. But now they suck. I didn't realise I'd have to go through that ordeal every month. Haha. I think I'm one of the lucky ones in this case, because our school had all sorts of seminars about periods (class 6), even about cleaning your genital area(class 8), hell they even told us about contraceptives and safe sex, if we were very eager to try it. (class 9)

I remember my dad telling me about periods all scientifically using words like Luteinising Hormone , FSH etc....I didn't really understand all of it😅 but I'm so thankful to him for educating me about it....it's just a process in the body involving a lot of hormones and linings😂!

This is so amazing and important, it's so awesome that this video is here. I take for granted the opportunities I have in Australia. if I were buying tampons and someone looked at me weirdly, it's their problem, not mine. periods, while not being fully understood, have nowhere near the stigma that Indian women feel.

Absolutely! Very period positive mother of two here. Like you said I am being culturally sensitive so played it with high volume so my in laws could hear too!! AND my girls will go to the temple if they want to.

In a country where talking openly about human beings' private parts is looked down upon and portrayed even in a stupidly funny manner in movies for example: laughing when someone farts, not realising the fact that flatulence is a very acute problem in irritable bowel syndrome and that frequent farts are not something that is comfortable for the stomach. Or when someone (another man or woman) hits another man in his private parts, people laugh not realising that any rough impact to the reproductive organ can cripple that person lifelong, it is not surprising that menstruation and puberty are looked down upon as taboo subjects. Even sanitary napkins advertisements castigate women to be cautious about wearing white pants during 'those days of the month'. To be frank, do I really give a damn about my pant colours if I pee or bleed in it? The first thing that I want to do is get rid of the wet feeling and then think about everything else. The day we start viewing human anatomy (men and women) seriously and stop making nonsensical jokes about it, is the day we will be able to think freely and deeply about these things. Nothing that keeps me from leading a normal and bodily comfortable daily life is funny or taboo. It is my right to be rid free of bodily discomfort in my everyday life.

Its ironic that we al know about this but not completely. This video has brought up a new aspect for a lot of people ho are unaware of the ordeal that young girls have to go through in India without realizing that they are going through an ordeal. I am a 12 year old girl...I got my period about 5 months ago...Thankfully, my mom and grandmother were well educated about menstruation thats why even I'm well educated..I came to know what are period when I was in 3rd grade..My mom did not hesitate to tell me what are periods? Why do they occur? What is their significance and all these things. .I wish all the girls get well educated and our next generation will not be ashamed to talk about this topic called 'MENSTRUATION'.
