Unwrapping the gifts of menstruation | Sinu Joseph | TEDxTughlaqRd
Sung and unsung heroes, local and national, shared their diverse gifts with an inspired audience at TEDxTughlaqRd. TEDxTughlaqRd followed the celebrated TED format of brilliant curation, multidisciplinary talks and performances and power packed sessions of 'ideas worth spreading.'
Sinu started work on Menstrual Hygiene awareness in 2010, along with my colleague and friend Vyjayanthi. As a Menstrual Hygiene educator, she's reached out to over 6500 adolescent girls from government schools across Karnataka, and women from rural backgrounds.
She's also an Advisory Trustee for The Forward Foundation an NGO promoting sustainable livelihoods & water management.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

The entire odisha celebrates menstrual periods of mother earth as a festival called Raja(Rawjaw-Rajaswala) in the month of june every year with excitement, traditional dishes n rituals!
I am an old man at 79. I would advise every young girl to take the connotations of this Natural Mother's talks as gospel truths.
Kamakhya temple in Assam has a festival which celebrates menstruation. Women are considered to be representatives of Nature, and thus Goddesses. It is to remind us about the ability to create life, thus it is sacred, just like what she said. It was a beautiful message. Thank you.

The question is, do the women know about menstrual hygiene? Are they comfortable talking about it?

@MollyTheMoonchild

@@arpannaskar1789 Don't know where you're going with that statement, but in case you didn't know, there are many Ayyappa temples in India, and the Sabarimala temple was consecrated in a specific manner that it's conducive for spiritual advancement, but this particular 'energy' is not compatible for women of childbearing age. Sinu herself has explained all of these beautifully in videos on KZread. Look it up for more information

@@MollyTheMoonchild history also points to occasions when women of child bearing age entered sabarimala. And we are denied that great devotional place. So there is no incompatibility. But preservation of some myths that doesn't make any sense. Don't curse for telling the fact......

Lovely talk. I started menstruating at the very young age of 10 and thought I was going to die and hid the fact from my parents. for two days i bled in silence and then my mom realized something was amiss. Today i have two daughters and as my older one reaches the age of 10... im on my toes... watching and vigilant. Ive given her enough information to keep her aware.. but will i be able to do enough .. is a question that plagues me. Your talk was beautiful, as was your voice melodious. Kudos to you
She is just too amazing she researched and embraced indian culture in true sense....she just made me realise that it is nothing to be sad about ..its even a free detox and beautiful gift we have
the mensuration is natural. this is the identity of a girl or women . please respect this instead of making fun.

I wouldn't say that it's the IDENTITY of a woman, friend. It's a feature of being female, not a personality trait. But 100% agree, respect the issue. I live in the U.S, and DAMN, I had no idea that many girls have no access to menstrual products. I do not envy them...yikes. Like, the cycle is natural, and interesting and (sometimes) beautiful...but that doesn't make a tampon (or whatever) any less needed!

Gentleness is nature's gift for women. Those who are swayed otherwise under the influence of western progressiveness and feminism, are actually doing an injustice to themselves by going against nature. The choice is yours - whether to doom yourselves under the influence of the west, or to redeem your life by subscribing to the richness of 'vaidic' Indianness!
This message must reach to everyone so that they can realise that menstruation is a natural process
what a wonderfully gentle and sublime way of presenting a so called taboo subject.....this speech needs widest publicity among moms and daughters.
One of the best talks ever heard about periods... Amazingly well explained....
Thank you Sinu. I am previleged to become a part of the audience of this outstanding talk about the reality of menstruation as a beauty of nature. This powerful message needs to be properly disseminated to reach the remote.
Wow you are such an eloquent speaker, charismatic personality
This is a good talk and you see she how wonderfully she has matured in her depth and knowledge on the subject when you hear her more recent videos. Great starting has culminated into greater work. Her books are wonderful.

someone is talking so beautifully on menustration- so good to see it. i feel so much comfortable after listening to u. actually, i feel so much uncomfotable with my periods as they are very painful and most important is that i permanently wants to get rid of it. but ur talk made me realise that menustration and periods r part of women's beauty. it is not a part of shame but to feel proud that i m able to bring new generation on the earth . thank uu soo much
I have been watching all your interviews lately Sinu, and I am filled with awe and respect. You have been able to break the blinkers of religion and conditioning , and have really set off on the path of self discovery. Wish you many more revelations of life and fulfillment.

Very beautifully put! Reclaiming the Shakti and creative powers of a woman is what feminity is all about. Truly a blessing from the divine which every woman must be cognizant of and be wholeheartedly in acceptance of this marvel.
Beautifully explained the 4 WEEK process, now I understand why my mood swings very often...
I am so inspired and I feel incredibly empowered right now... Thank you so much for your speech! I've had extremely painful experiences with suspected endometriosis (surgery due to confirm) to the point I've been taken by ambulance to hospital. Its been debilitating - and this Ted talk just inspired me to embrace my period, regardless of the pain and suffering it brings me, because it is beautiful in a way that I can finally understand. This has made my day - best thing I ever watched :)
Finally someone who uses mindfulness and common sense. Thank you sista!

Thank you for sharing...🙏🏾
Sinu joseph... This video was way superb than the one which u explained in scientific way of ayurveda which had a lot of negative comments...... But this really made sense and motivational
Even though, I didn't understand bleeding, but I wasn't afraid when I first bled because I saw women bleeding when growing up. And my mom was so helpful.
Very good lecture by a knowledgeable and research oriented woman campaigner. There is lot spoken and written on the topic by many. There is lot to learn from her presentation style, content, impactfullness and simplicity.
Beutifully narrated the bestowed gift we have. Need to nurture and not to feel loaded. Great speech.
Splendid .. Never thought it can be explained this beautifully ..
What a beautiful message delivered so nicely..
I am so lucky that my mother told me everything about the women's period at an age of ....well I don't even remember how old I was back then. I am so glad and thankful that she told me anyway. When I first bled at age 11, I wasn't scared at all. It was a normal day like every other day. I had my math exam and it went pretty well I think. When I came back and realized that I had my period, I was calm and collected. Can't imagine what it's like for other girls. I really hope that every girl in this world isn't ashamed to talk about this.
Hat's of you mam you are the one right and perfectly explain that the menstruation isn't a stigma ,it is an beautiful blessings to women
She's the real "mother India"
Wow, I wasn't expecting such an enlightening video. Thank you 💫
Beautiful ....first time ever I have a different and beautiful perspective on menstruation.
Brilliant presentation about menstruation( the foundation of human existence .) This topic is most important to know all female genders in their early life, and also others. Our Rigveda said" women are foundation of human existence " that is why we prays goddess too.
