Unwrapping the gifts of menstruation | Sinu Joseph | TEDxTughlaqRd

Sung and unsung heroes, local and national, shared their diverse gifts with an inspired audience at TEDxTughlaqRd. TEDxTughlaqRd followed the celebrated TED format of brilliant curation, multidisciplinary talks and performances and power packed sessions of 'ideas worth spreading.'
Sinu started work on Menstrual Hygiene awareness in 2010, along with my colleague and friend Vyjayanthi. As a Menstrual Hygiene educator, she's reached out to over 6500 adolescent girls from government schools across Karnataka, and women from rural backgrounds.
She's also an Advisory Trustee for The Forward Foundation an NGO promoting sustainable livelihoods & water management.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Kamakhya temple in Assam has a festival which celebrates menstruation. Women are considered to be representatives of Nature, and thus Goddesses. It is to remind us about the ability to create life, thus it is sacred, just like what she said. It was a beautiful message. Thank you.

Sinu herself has explained all of these beautifully in videos on KZread. Look it up for more information

I started menstruating at the very young age of 10 and thought I was going to die and hid the fact from my parents. for two days i bled in silence and then my mom realized something was amiss. Today i have two daughters and as my older one reaches the age of 10... im on my toes... watching and vigilant. Ive given her enough information to keep her aware.. but will i be able to do enough .. is a question that plagues me. Your talk was beautiful, as was your voice melodious. Kudos to you

I wouldn't say that it's the IDENTITY of a woman, friend. It's a feature of being female, not a personality trait. But 100% agree, respect the issue. I live in the U.S, and DAMN, I had no idea that many girls have no access to menstrual products. I do not envy them...yikes. Like, the cycle is natural, and interesting and (sometimes) beautiful...but that doesn't make a tampon (or whatever) any less needed!

Those who are swayed otherwise under the influence of western progressiveness and feminism, are actually doing an injustice to themselves by going against nature. The choice is yours - whether to doom yourselves under the influence of the west, or to redeem your life by subscribing to the richness of 'vaidic' Indianness!

When I came back and realized that I had my period, I was calm and collected. Can't imagine what it's like for other girls.
