Let’s get into "Red Rocking Chair," also known as "Sugar Babe" or "Honey Babe." There’s many many great versions of this song out there, but today we’re looking at Doc Boggs’ 2-finger version. While I usually cover clawhammer techniques, we're switching things up with a two-finger approach, perfect for beginners and those looking to expand their playing styles.
In this video, we’ll look at getting your banjo into sawmill tuning. We'll adjust the tuning to suit your vocal range. And we’ll walk through the song slowly. Don't worry if you're new to this; I'll provide detailed instructions and tabs on-screen.
We'll also explore singing while playing, focusing on aligning the melody with your banjo's rhythm. Remember, the beauty of this song lies in its simplicity and heartfelt execution. So, don't stress about perfection; it's all about playing with passion.

Thanks for the great intro to two finger playing! Just to be sure, are you playing all the melody notes with the thumb except the ones on the first string which are with the finger?

Thanks so much! I’m glad you enjoyed it. Unfortunately the tab cut off my right hand a bit in the video! But yes you’re exactly right. My index finger plays the first string (and sometimes the 2nd when I’m hitting both in that first part). The thumb plays the other 4 strings.

I thought Dock Boggs played his own three finger style.

Yes, that's true! I misspoke in the video - and I'm actually playing a version pretty close to his but in a 2-finger style because I think it's a bit easier to play. Thank you for pointing that out!

@@BanjoSkills I find Docs three finger style quite liberating and leads to a more expressive style of playing that you can use to make up your own style. At least that is what I've been able to do. There is a guy on KZread that teaches doc Boggs style perfectly.

Great channel. You’re growing fast! Just curious, is that a Vega banjo?

Thanks so much! I watched your video on your Vega Senator banjo a few days ago. So nice! I'm playing a Vega Vintage Star but I was very close to buying the Senator before I chose this one.

@@BanjoSkills oh nice! Thanks for watching! I lm not much of a KZreadr yet, but I’m slowly growing in views which is kind of cool. I recognized the star on the headstock! The Vintage star looks really nice, mine didn’t come with a scoop or railroad spikes. I love it though, it’s great for oldtime or bluegrass.

@@KenneyCmusic Of course! looking forward to checking out more of your videos in the future. Cool to see you play so many different instruments! The reason I went with the vintage star was the tone ring - this thing is loud! Makes the videos a little more difficult because it overwhelms my microphone 😀
