Red Rhodes plays pedal steel guitar at California Country Club (early 1990s)

One of the only videos that exist of Red Rhodes performing live at a steel guitar show - this from the early 1990s. Note Red is playing his blue MCI, which he toured with Mike Nesmith during this time (and can be seen on Nesmith's "Live At The Britt" concert and "Austin City Limits" appearance). When Red would play Scotty's International Steel Guitar Convention in the 1980s, he had a penchant for classics from the 30s and 40s...he continues that tradition in this set.
For Nesmith die-hards, note the inclusion of Bobby Garrett's "Rose City Chimes" which was the instrumental the First National Band (of which Red was a part) first cut in 1970 and was featured as the single-only B-side of their very first 45, "Little Red Rider." Now you can see how it's done ;)

My group was playing at the Whiskey in the early 70s. I kept having bridge problems with my Les Paul. A trip to Red's shop was all that was needed. Came up with a perfect and fresh solution to the problem. Never had another issue. Loved his playing too.

Red used to fix my instruments and service my early Fender Twin. He closed his shop in Hollywood and worked out of his house on Ranchito in Van Nuys, California. A great musician and a very nice person.

Red was my dad’s cousin. He once came over and invited the family to see the Monkees, and a new guitar sensation named Jimi Hendrix. Sorry to say we didn’t go. I was just 5 years old.

Red Rhodes. Wow I love this player & music. Found a record of his and it strangely became a fast favorite. Something unique and other worldly. Love this upload.

After I saw a liner note in a Dokken record from George Lynch proclaiming Red Rhodes as "Amp God, " I knew I had to find this guy! I was living in, and playing the Sunset Strip hard rock music scene in the mid 80s in Hollywood. Decided to actively find Red in 1989. Surpisingly, he was in the phone book! White pages! lol. Went out to his house just up the street in Van Nuys w my '72 100 watt Marshall. Told him I wanted the "George Lynch" service. Red smiled and knew exactly what I was talking about. In 2 days he brought the amp back to factory fresh specs and put new Groove Tubes in it. Charged me 150 bucks! Great guy, fun stories in his shop at the house. I never forgot Red and how he made that amp howl. RIP Red, you ruled!

A mate of mine used to work with him at his shop in LA, claimed he learnt almost everything about amps from him, and being a guitar tech.. Said he was a lovely bloke, plenty of great stories about the comings and going of various rock stars, quite a legend..!

great steel player!! been a fan since the 70's. Mr. Sandman has strange chords in it....almost sounding out of tune at times....but I think that was just the songs weird chords? possibly a knee lever slightly out? but, everything else here sound 100% in tune & great. Did Red play on "Don't bogart that joint"? it's on the Easy Rider movie. watched it last night. I thought someone said Red played on that song.

From the look on his face, he does hit a few 'bum' notes - but great recovery! ;-)
