Remaster? The game is damn 5 years old dude. It needs a 60fps patch. End of story. If they insist on charging for it then give us a "directors cut" upgrade for 10 dollars. Make it 60fps and throw in a handful of new missions.

@@anderecontentif you play on Series X or PS5, you’re playing the Xbox One X/PS4 Pro enhanced versions, not the base console versions. that’s why the game plays at a native 4K resolution as well as having significant graphical upgrades compared to a base PS4 or Xbox One. i’m unsure if even the current consoles could reliably handle the game at 4K60, maybe with better optimization and whatnot they could and it would be a welcome addition.

I kept holding off in hopes they’d come out with a 60 patch but finally caved and decided to start playing again and it was totally worth it. I figure if they do have a 60 mode in the future, that’ll just be another reason to play through it all again.

THIS CHANNEL IS INVALUABLE! We greatly appreciate this. I would strongly encourage revisiting HDR games this way so people can enjoy those games as well as they do RDR2. For example, Resident Evil 2 and/or 4 since their patches. Thanks so much for breaking this stuff down.

I tried recently for resident evil 2, i can never get hdr to work for that game its always so washed out.

HDR is essentially the fixed version with the Patch releases while Cinematic is what was available at launch. Hence why there are (legitimate) claims that the HDR implementation is lackluster (and it doesn't leverage HGIG)

I finally picked the game up on PC a few months ago after not having played it since its release on the PS4 back in 2018. At the time of the PS4 release, HDR was in a really bad place and the TV I had wasn't able to help compensate much at all (LG B7). Now on the PC with an LG C2 42" I am continually blown away by the HDR presentation along side the beautiful graphics. It has been a joy replaying the game over the last couple of months and I find myself much more immersed in the world.

I am now on a 4k LG Monitor with 160 HZ and I'm about to play the game again at 4k with my 6900 xt. Nice to see that you had the same tv as I had greetings from germany

Fantastic video. I play on PC, and love the way the HDR looks, but I'm not sure exactly what it's doing. I launch with HDR turned on in Windows and keep the game at Windowed Borderless. When I adjust the in-game HDR calibration, nothing seems to be changing. But the colors and contrasts are nice and bold during play. Is this Window's Auto-HDR at work?

Never in a game have I stopped so frequently to take in the beautiful surroundings than I did in my play through of RDR2. I was just amazed at what the developers were able to pull off.

What's your hdr settings bro?

Bought this on the Series S knowing its tech specs, but this video helped me simply by changing to game HDR. Big plus to the picture quality.

I think the reasons people say HDR is broken is either they remember the game from launch or they haven't switched over to the game HDR option, and that in HDR colours are less saturated and washed out compared to the SDR grading.

I think the spare use of hdr color space comes down to the creator intent, where they wanted more of a muted look for a game set in the old west.

Great point. I just finished the game on PC without hdr and after watching this booted up my PS5 version. After getting the hdr to look close to accurate, I noticed the color muting compared to non hdr. After looking at a scene in Valentine with the brown of the Grizzlies Outlaw jacket against a brown building I thought “it does look more muted, but it also looks accurately like dull, boring brown”. We live in north Texas and after walking outside and seeing the lighting of the grass and late sun in real life I thought “well shoot, it does look like the Midwest setting of the game”. Excited for my 2.5 play through with hdr.

Great content as always! Probably just me but I find the shake transitions between comparison images largely obscures the differences you're trying to illustrate though.

Thanks, that was very helpful since there wasn’t any fresh overview of the HDR for this game. Please do GTA V next. I have settings there that recommended by Vincent from HDTVtest but I’d like to know your opinion.

GREAT THANKS! I am not technically proficient. The GAME vs CINEMA MODE did it for me. Didn't even need to adjust the peak brightness or paper white for the OLED C7 and Xbox X. The main issue for me was the Wardrobe which had really BAD lighting. This is MOSTLY fixed now cept for certain wardrobes and times of day but still 95% better and 💯 percent better for the game overall!

Hey Marcus, thanks for your great video. I have an s95c and I'm just wondering why you set the HDR peak brightness to 2000 nits when the Rockstar logo disappears around 1,300 nits? As far as I know, the TV is only capable of around 1,300 nits as well.

The HDR option in RDR2 is a huge pain in the butt. However after changing it a hundred times and then a setting on my TV I have found that sweet spot. It does look fantastic. Just finished my 3rd playthrough. Was my favorite playthrough and achieved 100% for the first time on any game in my life.

Cyberpunk 2077 has a black raising so I think it's fair to call it broken. Additionally, I find the HDR in Cyberpunk to be very dark. While you can adjust it in the settings menu, doing so exacerbates the black level problem, (as per your own testing). However, it is true that the highlights look astonishing. Red Dead Redemption 2 looks really good in my experience - a aw3423dw owner

A little color saturation boost with reshade on PC is all you need, this game has one of the best HDR.

I have a LG CS which has the same panel as the C1 so are the CX settings you always show still usable and correct for the C1 or CS model?

Been enjoying this masterpiece again recently. Switching from the PS4 pro version running on PS5 (still amazing) to the One X version running on Series X, the difference between chequerboard 4K and native 4K is pretty substantial. Also using the motion smoothing on the C1 makes the game look like 60fps with little artefacts thanks to how good the LG handles motion. Until we get a proper 60fps patch on console at least. Due to the nature of the game, the slight increase in input lag isn’t too much of a concern.

C1 user here as well - what motion smoothing settings are you using? I noticed a significant improvement just by switching to Series X due to the way the Xbox handles LFC on a system-level compared to PS5.

Exact the same for me. I have played this game in 2018 on PS4, with a bad tv.. and today I play it on lg CX and ps5. Do you recommend the trumotion for the 60fps effect ? What about input lag and artefact ?

@@Spoggi99YT you need to disable VRR and ALM in the Xbox settings and then I use the ‘standard’ picture mode. I used dejudder at max but also used the ‘smooth’ option. Can’t remember which I stuck with without loading up the game again and checking.

thank you! very helpful i have a big complaint regarding the PS5 version though they never made it 2160p! it is PS4's 1080p version upscaled to 4K and it is very noticeable on a 4K TV! Xbox version at the same is native 2160p because Xbox One X is natively 4K this makes RDR2 on PS5 useless, I had to buy a second copy for Xbox Series X

I found that after they added the "Game" HDR Style it was really good. My biggest gripe is that the nights are too bright but that's a separate issue

are you using dtm on or hgig?

Back then when the game launched I've been saying this, there's not much to show in HDR, but people are to used to their instagram filters and have an unrealistic expectation of color, wanting vivid poppy colors everywhere. I believe the same is true for black levels, remember, there's only one true black, is called vanta black, a special paint that absorbs 99% of light, the other situation where you would see true black is if you are in a completely dark room with no light penetration.

True, but in case of elevated black floor issues it looks like the image is not even showing darkness properly but more like a shade of pencil grey, not just above black like it should. There is a whole range of between true black and pencil grey unused and makes dark nightime scenes look just foggy or smokey, not true darkness where your eyes can make out the details just barely.

Hi! I am playing through the Sony A95L on Series X. The rockstar logo doesn’t disappear until I get to at least 2200 nits. Does this sound too high? Going by your instructions I would have thought to be around 1700 (1500 + 200 extra for consoles).

Was this before or after they added support for Samsung's HDR10+ Gaming? I am playing on a G9 OLED on PC and with that mode enabled, the game looks fantastic. I didn't have to adjust any settings at all.

One of the most detailed and impressive open world games ever created. If not the best. The PC version is superior to consoles in so many ways...and every time I load it up the animations and the living breathing world blows me away. Even today no game comes close. I use a C9 and HDR is sublime

I would disagree here. My experience was way different for some reason. Black levels were always more grey compared to deep black levels in SDR. Tested that on C9, S95B and my TV now Sony A95K. With XSX and before that a One X. I couldn't get night time looking proper without changing TV settings. But honestly, seeing your footage now. The night appears too bright. Compare that to SDR and the difference is huge. SDR is proper dark. Rockstar really messed that up. Had night time been proper dark as SDR in HDR it would have been perfect.

@@brainycabde And when I still had the S95B I was shit out of luck, because Samsung doesn't have a normal brightness slider in the settings, the one setting that comes close to it doesn't have the same effect as a normal brightness setting that LG and Sony do have.

@@bigkabuto Brightness on an LG OLED is digital black level, so you crushed the shadows/blacks to fix the game's "broken" output. Its really the only option to fix these issues, but I personally dislike doing it because it means shadow detail is lost sometimes. What display do you have now?

I think there is a misunderstanding in the term "specular highlight". It isn't just the brightest object of the image, to be called specular it needs to be a highlight that is reflected in some ways. For an example a tiny white reflection dot onto a round shiny surface (like a pool ball or a glass lamp) that's a specular highlight. If you look at a bright white sky out of a window or a bright fire spot of a lamp, well, it is just the light source, it's direct light. If it's not reflected than it's not specular, it's just a highlight :) hoping to help, even with my imperfect english

Okay, this is interesting. I have a LG C1 and I have my peak brightness set to 1000 nits and paper white to 80. I will try 200-300 instead and see what I like. Edit: 800 nits and 250 paper white was the sweet spot for me.

Super bizarre thing to say an LG CX is required, older oled will do mostly a fine job of tone mapping the highlights down and you'll still benefit from 10 bit color and better peak brightness. Hell, most mini LED displays will do well here too, I'm watching your video on a Neo G7 and it looks spectacular. Also, even the LG CX only hits it's maximum peak brightness in a 1 percent window so most of the time it's being tone mapped.

I said the minimum is a CX not that this TV us required. Any screen with similar specs as the CX is the bare minimum for me to use HDR

VRR isn’t available for PS4 games and Freesync isn’t available on ps5 at all so my suggestion would be no

I was confused when people said there were no blacks and it was all raised? I remember seeing perfect black in areas, especially in forests where the moon doesn't get through a lot of the trees. I think RDR2 looked great in HDR game mode when set up correctly on my AW3423DW, seriously the sunset and sunrise looked stunning, running around saint denis looked great as well. Most raised blacks are because of the light bouncing around the scene.

Been arguing with a lot of people who calls out RDR2 HDR broken. After they updated the game with proper HDR model instead of the "cinema" they rebranded that just raises the brightness it was awesome. Never used SDR in that game afterwards.

Specular highlights and black level floor is not the problem. With HDR on, it ruins the color and makes it dull.

No reason to add those transitions in the comparisons. It just makes it harder to adjust the eyes.
