Red Bull RB19 - Aerodynamics Analysis and Initial Thoughts

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

After being shrouded in secrecy, the Red Bull RB19 has finally broken cover at testing. So the question is, what's changed? In general the philosophies around the car are pretty much the same as last year, there are some small interesting details that we can dive into though, as well as some flow vis shots.

In the interests of keeping this video professional and on topic I cut a 5 minute exposition on flow vis analysis at the end. The TLDR of it is be careful of reading flow vis pics as it may not be dried in track conditions yet, and *definitely don't try to analyse flow vis on a car that hasn't even left the pit lane!* Hope everyone enjoys the video and feel free to drop your speculation about any upcoming Red Bull Aero Updates below!

These videos have landed me in a cool opportunity. Know little about aerodynamics but was hanging out in a hanger while waiting to pick up a friend from a pilots license lesson and ended up in a conversation with one of the instructors. He went around the plane and asked for guesses about what features did and other stuff and the basic grasp I gained from these videos impressed him enough that the next lesson my friend takes the other instructor would give me a free flight to try it out. Love the videos and thank you for indirectly getting to fly a aircraft while broke in my 20s.

Nice job ! As a beginner though I find this a bit obscure. I would be really interested on a video that come back to the basics principles of a F1 such as What do we wan't to obtain from a wing, from a sidepod, from a floor, and how to obtain it. Because it is not obvious to me why you reflect in term of vortex mainly and not that much in term of pressions. I believe that unfolding your explanations of minute details, such as you do in this video, from the basic goal of the piece studied would improve the simplicity for beginners like me. A simple example about a front wing to make it clear: We wan't load from a front wing (1), minimum drag for the load (2) and flux control (3) to pass the air around the front wheels. Thats why this shape gives load, this curve gives outwash, this winglet gives a sealing vortex that encloses the flux from this part. I don't know if this is clear, neither if this is interesting to you ahaha. Anyway Nice content and I will continue to learn from you !

  • @Pandamasque
    @Pandamasque Жыл бұрын

Everyone's hyping the "aggressive undercut" but to me the biggest change in the sidepods is that their previously curved side face (where Oracle and Siemens logos are) has been flattened so much that it seems concave from certain angles! I assume this is to keep the front wheel wake out for longer, which is a leaf from the 2022 Ferrari playbook. Curiously, in 2023 Maranello took a step in the opposite direction here.

Would love to see you do some videos on the MotoGP aero devices. In the last few years the bikes have been developing the aero a lot. It’s seems like it’s much more complicated as bikes will lean 60 degrees left and right compared to only a couple of degrees or so in a car so the “downforce” is always changing direction on a bike.

I love your videos and I've been able to use some of your older videos to plan our endurance Champcar build. I think the motorsport community would appreciate a video on differences in drag/downforce potential between open cockpit cars like F1, BAC Mono, Radical, Lous 3-eleven, closed cockpit cars like GT Cup and Prototype, and 'convertible' race cars with windscreens like the Miata, Caterham/Lotus Seven, and Dallara Stradale. Is there a benefit or detriment between the aeroscreen in indycar and the open cockpit in F1? Further, amateur/grassroots road race cars rarely have side windows but always have a windscreen, so is there a drag benefit to being convertible like a Miata (or just removing the rear windscreen like the Visceral Racing Porsche 944 that has been very successful in Champcar)? Is there potentially a drag reduction in having a roofline or is removing the rear windscreen the only beneficial move assuming typical grassroots motorists have no driver/passenger windows? Lastly, how does a roof or lack thereof affect the downforce potential of a rear wing? Thanks for always providing such great content!

Also his thesis focuses especially on ground effect usage on sports/race cars. Newey was also one of the minds behind the change in F1 philosophy, the whole car works for the aerodynamic and not the aero for the car. His Leyton House also had a more efficient aero than the high nose Tyrrell, only having less downforce because the vortex sealed the Tyrrell undertray. But the high nose would become the standard anyway.

Kyle - great video as always! A question- if the FIA working group is so exercised by controlling outwash from the front wing as an aid to overtaking why are the front wings SO wide? Could they not be width-restricted to say centre line of the front tyres? This might help in curbing the levels of front wing damage we often see at races with subsequent interruptions to great wheel-to-wheel dices!

Hi Kyle. Eureka!!! I think I have solved the aero differences between the RB 18 and W14. Mercedes are wrong with the no side pod concept because the air flow around the body is unhindered and too fast - hence the differential pressure above the floor and under the floor is less compared to the RB18 and hence less downforce. On the RB18 the side pods stick out and are undercut to form a twisting vortex as seen by the flow vis patterns in testing. It takes longer for to pass front to back - greater pressure differential and more downforce. Also the RB18 is less dragging because air going into the side pods is forced out upsides through the louvers and the hot air expands pushing airflow above the car leading to less drag at high speed. Please advise as regards your thoughts and pass on to Mercedes.😊😊

This was spoken about during testing yesterday. Both the RedBull and AlphaTauri have the same roll hoop intake now, and both are powered by Honda (RBPT). It most likely has nothing to do with overall aerodynamic performance but engine air intake performance.

This already exists. Mercedes used it last year. But for a majority of the aerodynamic devices they testing, the visibility to other teams doesn't matter because you have to have multiple pieces of the puzzle to put together the full image of what's occurring throughout the car.

Kyle if you ever get bored of real cars, I've been studying your videos and trying to apply what I learn to a 1/8 scale rc car I'm setting up for speed runs. In this video I got 93mph running with my full set of 3d printed aero parts. In the second run I'd broken one of my front canard wings and took them off and decided to run without them. As I hit 76mph the front lifted and I did a full on Mercedes lemans style flip. I love watching your videos! kzread.info/dash/bejne/onuZpLmNhJXOXdo.html

Even if it's just educational guessing or speculation, you should try to give more conclusions to your analysis. It would easily double your viewers. Showing what's going on in F1 cars is one thing. But clearly explaining what it could actually mean will wake up a whole new audience.

Sounds good, and I would be interested too, but I believe Kyle is a man of evidence (data) and science, he often mentions what is the possible function of different details, and he also points out if he isn't sure about something, because of the lack of proper data. He is clearly not a speculator.

Indeed I completely agree with your assessment. Speculation is what fans and media do. This is the science explained as a best guess with the information available at the time. What can be said anyway besides this could make the car go faster. A bit blunt/ nutshell but that's the aim and only conclusion you can make/ the only thing F1 teams want to do. Go fast and win!

@@staLkerhu Nobody in F1, not even team engineers, is ever sure how aero changes work out until a car hits testing. And even then they're not always sure. So nobody will hold it against Kyle to give an argumented opinion on what aero solutions he suspects will work out best based on his experience. In fact, I'll bet that was often what he was paid to do at Mercedes.

They had the body wrap from last year and wouldn't have to spend some budget on it for 2023? Seriously, it's probably a minor expense, but an expense. It's possible their days of complete graphics changes while still being RB graphics are over.

You used to work at Mercedes please get back to them and design a championship winning car and help sir Lewis Hamilton to get a great farewell by winning his 8th championship. Please...... I'm saying this because I don't wanna see him leaving the spot without the 8th championship because he deserves it. He is a legend and he fought everything to become that. And he taught us that dreams are not just dreams they can be fulfilled.
