I have had the use of both types of steering on a few different trikes since 2018 and even though I currently ride a "Direct Steering" style trike as it is all I can afford, both my wife Jo and I "Prefer" "Indirect Steering" over Direct Steering! Direct steering can be "twitchy" at times, it seems almost "too quick", jmho. Yes the "turning radius" is tighter with DS but it's just does not have the almost "power steering" type feel that Indirect Steering has, again, jmho. I'm currently paying payments for a USED GreenSpeed GTO (older model) trike I'm buying on Layaway at Angletech: www.cycledifferent.com and it has "Indirect Steering"!! :)

Not a trike user, but it would seem there are several more linkages/bearings to wear out, get loose in indirect. But I guess better engineering can solve that.

If you have a light and low trike like for example a Catrike 700, then direct steer is a simpler and lighter construction. Indirect under the seat steer is perhaps a bit more advanced and forgiving. But I bet you never tried direct steer with armrests. I don't mean wrist rests, but armrests. To me that makes all the difference in how much control you have over direct steer.

All of your videos are great to watch, especially since you're very detailed in regards to each part of the different trike that you get to experience riding. I, can't wait to do the little tweeks on my quattrovelo. And, get back into riding and return to doing the photography that, I haven't enjoyed in years.

Well done again.....I might have mentioned earlier, but you inspired me to buy a trike...a Greeenspeed Magnum in Australia. I love all your discussion around the various issues. Sorry to hear about your loss of the custom made trike,,,, hopefully, it'll turn up soon..Keep up the good work Matt....and get back into your family when they arrive .

AZUB's seat that adjusts fore and aft is an outstanding and innovative idea, well thought and highly useful. When I got my new trike last year, the dealer did not set the boom length properly for me, even though I provided my X-Seam measurement. Since this dealer (Hostel Shoppe) was across the country, I did not have the luxury of simply having them properly adjust boom length, so after extending the boom two inches (yeah, really far off), I then had to break the chain and add some links to account for the longer boom and keep my rear derailleur functioning in an acceptable margin of movement. But if I had had this adjustable seat like on the AZUB, it would likely have been a simple and quick sliding the seat backwards ... unless the seat was already at that point, in which case I would have needed to do what I did on this HP Velotechnik last year. Anyway, I think AZUB is quite visionary in many ways (although I never have liked their method for the brake levers being inverted compared to a standard recumbent trike, which necessitates the cables doing that awkward big curve, making them easy to catch on things ... Personally, I have always liked pulling the brake levers from the bottom ... AZUB claims that their design is more biomechanically efficient and natural, however I would rework their setup if I had an AZUB, returning to the typical method of attachment and usage). steve

II have both type of trikes, direct and indirect steering and I prefer indirect steering best. I am really enjoying you post on your trike build. I think you convinced me to try AZUB, I like the way it is engineered. Can't wait to see the final video project you develop for AZUB.

I've been really enjoying your experiences and commentaries with Azub trikes, Matt. Looking forward to seeing more. As for seat comfort, I have a HP Velotechnik Scorpion+ FS26 with the original mesh seat. I tend to slide down the seat and have to continually adjust. I've been looking forward to getting their new adjustable Ergomesh Premium Mesh Seat. However, it is virtually impossible for past purchasers to order one from HP Velotechnik. I was told bybmy trike shop that new trike purchasers are getting priority over us. In fact, I couldn't even order one. Ugh!

I love my AZUB trike. I’ve owned an Azub TriCon26 for at least 3 years. I test rode HP Velo Scorpion and Gekko, ICE Sprint X Tour, and a KMX. The AZUBs just handle better. Cornering feel and stiffness of the swing arm. The construction is amazing. It rides great and feels solid. I’ve done a few 200km brevets on it. I’d like to comment on something Matt said as he may not know, they have a TriCon GR which has 26” wheels all around like the Ti-Fly X. My dealer changes his Ti-fly from 2x20/26 touring setup to 3x26 off-road setup and back depending on what he wants to do. It’s not as simply as changing out the wheels but it’s not much harder. My trike was delivered with a mat grey finish, Shimano Diore 3x10 gearset, Avid BB7 disc brakes, Triker front tires and Marathon Tour in back. I also got the small rack, which is sufficient for long rides and minor touring. I also have the “side bag” but only on the right side. What I’ve changed. I replaced the Shimano gearset with a SRAM AXS Etap setup. Force 43/30 crankset, Rival 10-36 cassette, Rival front and rear derailleurs, and an Eagle controller. This is better for my riding. The controlled is only one unit. The electronics decide when to shift the front. It works super smooth. I have effectively 15 distinct ratios. The 3x Diore only had 14. I also changed the tires. Front is Continental SpeedContact2 and back is a Schwalbe Kojak. This was done for speed and efficiency for the brevets. If you are going to tour, this tire choice is not recommended. I do want a “faster” trike in addition to the TriCon. I’ll either get a VTX, have a customized AZUB, or have a custom frame (in titanium) made locally.

Hey Matt, thanks for the TRIcon video. At 77 (yea a senior) I am planning on ordering a TRIcon GR sometime this winter, and the AZUB dealer in Calgary has suggested the Schlumpf Mountain Drive. I am planning on a western Canada tour next year, and I was thinking of a mid-drive motor system, but then if things start breaking, I want to be able to fix it myself (providing I have a spare chain or derailleur hanger, rear cassette) so the extra weight is just not worth it. So Schlumpf it is. Yes, I have watched your video on that very thing and for sure, indirect steering. Thanks again :)

I have had my Tricon 26 for a year now and 3,000 miles. Love every bit of it. Mine had the 30 speed which I use all of them. I have a basement parting garage with 20 foot incline in 75 feet to get out of the garage to start my rides. I had a Terra Trike Rambler with 24 inch wheels all around and 21 speeds which I liked but the Tricon is a whole higher class trike. If you get to the midwest USA (Lincoln NE.) look me up, will go riding. I have had both and like the indirect much better.

One of the best , she also folds in TWO ways with or without wheels . Quick to fold easy and worth extra cash with hinge. Also go to azub and see how you can have this in many different set ups equipment and a colour of your choosing of coarse. Don't have one but have been watching vids and reading oodles and she's worth every penny .

direct steering 100% for "bombing" hills at high speeds..I think Indirect is far to twitchy for high speed downhills..I started on a terratrike tour2(terrajunk lol) back in 2013 and upgraded to a Catrike..The Catrike is a lot more stable at high speeds..I do have a Indirect trike in my Ice Full Fat but never really ride it fast down hill..But nothing beats "bombing" a big hill at 50+ mph on my Catrike!!!

I did not try a trike in both versions but I did try an indirect steering on a 2 wheel recumbent and a direct steering on a trike. Did not find a preference for either. The biggest issue I find is the angle of the handle on the handle bars and the distance the handle bars is from your body. Currently tested (adjusted) the handle bars on my existing Fat trike as far forward as I can place it and added/designed a longer handle bar extension. It was ok as it relates to distance but was still not satisfied with the angle of the handle bars. Tried both Horizontal and vertical configurations and found them not to be optimal for long distance comfort. Designed a new set with what I think will be the preferred height and angle. Just need to paint and install them on my existing (Trident Terrain) Fat trike. I will have a better feel next summer as to how my change makes a difference, during long rides. I like the comment you made about the seat adjustment on your trike in the video. I too would prefer a seat that is capable of having what passes for a fulcrum point, mid way up the back of the seat. Keeping the seat distance the same from the front axis (weight distribution point) as you adjust your seat.

I have a Catrike Trail and I like the direct steering, right from the posts. I did not like the feel of the handles and the rods coming from the indirect steering. I felt the indirect steering could break down too easy for me anyway. Great video Matt and again love the drone shots. I also like that Rack on the back of the trike and it is a huge rack, it looks very strong and sturdy. JaYoe Matt. From Canada.

I have had 3 Catrikes all direct steering, the 04 Road model I was not impressed with the steering, the 06 Road model had improved steering. The 2010 Catrike 700 really tracks well, very comfortable steering at speed, very low and laid back, I think the long wheel base makes it track well.

It’s easiest to describe the difference as the difference between manual steering and power steering in a car. Indirect steering is easier at higher speeds and in my opinion safer too. Perhaps think about checking out the GTS and/or Spyder, maybe your opinion will change. We have been treated well by the company and its staff with the first purchase in 2012 after my husband's stroke and subsequently by LBS with the purchase of our new Terra Trikes late last summer 2021.

IMHO either Triot or one of these fat tires trike would be safe and comfortable trikes for adventurers like you who ride on roads for long distance. Did you ever considered one of those German/Duch made bicycle trailers? Good luck with tricking around the world.
