Insaniquarium was great, loved having a screensaver with all my fish on it making money while I was asleep. Shame that there hasn't been a sequel or anything like that. Although considering Plants vs Zombies 2 ended up being a mobile game with a bunch of in-app purchases maybe we're better off. Haven't played it though so no idea. Anyway raising a tank of creatures with a food chain is an interesting mechanic and I want to build up my own game off of this, but figured that a good starting exercise would be just recreating Insaniquarium.

Its unfortunate how modern games sacrifice realism for the sake of "fun". Aliens are notorious for being alergic to seafood, so it makes no sense to portray them eating fish. I also used to poke the koi in my grandpa's pond and I can confirm they do drop all kinds of goodies, but never coins.

The goldfish sprite perfectly encapsulates the very many advanced emotions that goldfish are notoriously known for. That being said, I love them so very much

This game brainwormed me hard as a kid, it'd be cool to see a modern take on it (though I'm not even sure what you'd change... but I guess that's the point of just trying it again and seeing what happens)
