Glad you've got back to this, and do love the mk5 gti having had one previously. Get the feeling though you weren't having too much fun. Hope once you are finished that you'll feel better about it.
Brilliant video as a Mk5 gti owner love to see this stuff, was encouraged to replace my pick up pipe on a service, other common stuff like diverter valve, pcv valve, cam follower. Personally would have ko4 it, but looking forward to seeing this running.
Really enjoyed watching you rebuild this motor Dean. Great content 👍😎
Nice one Dean looking forward to seeing you finish it and seeing it running 👍
All looking good Dean, roll on pt2, well done .
Loved it 👍 great detail, had to laugh when you said ‘ not much to do now’ 😂 Got to respect your skills 🫡
Great video Dean looking forward to seeing the next one great job
Dean, you make it all look so easy 😀 another awesome video.

Great video, and it shows your knowledge and history to its best advantage. Thanks.
I’ve done a couple of cylinder head removal and replacements due to jumped timing chains on Mk6 GTI engines. I just bolt the turbo/exhaust manifold and inlet manifold on while it’s on the bench and then drop the head back onto the block fully assembled. I know the Mk6 engine is different but I would have thought that you could do it the same way. It’s much easier to bolt the exhaust manifold on before the head is on the engine.
Hi from durham Dean👋👍 great shout getting the golf sorted👍 hope everything goes well with first start 👌 cant wait to see how you get on with It👍 I have had a go of me pals 06 gti dsg with flappy paddles and its a beast for auto but dsg🤔 they problematic so I wont buy it cos I know It will fall fail with me and my luck but its nice car tho👍 thanks for your time and be safe see you soon👍👋
You’ve come a long way,just keep on doing what your and carry on 👍👍👍😎😎😎
Cracking Video, love these rebuilds thanks
Superbly entertaining as usual 👍
Brilliant clip. Loved it.

Great video Dean 👌
Love that rebuild video really interesting
Great video, very informative.
I was waiting for this one 💪
Awesome channel. I spend all my free time restoring, maintaining and building American muscle cars, sports cars and hot rods. My experience with British, Euro and Japanese cars is limited, which makes this channel really interesting! Subscribing for sure!
I haven't seen your other episodes on this, but have you checked the bottom end and the oil pump. Might be worth getting your pump checked out and bearings replaced as any oil starvation will have severely cooked them.
@SavingSalvage

oil pump works and the crank looks okay from what I can see, I'm not going to fully strip the crank to check, ill find out when I start it up.
I'm looking forward to hearing the golf running Dean
I recommend making sure the actuator is spot on before putting it in because it's a headache trying to adjust that afterwards lol
clocking the turbo !
Have a nice weekend Pro Regards from Holland
I’ve done a couple of remove and replace cylinder heads on TSI GTI engines. I assembled them on the bench including turbo and inlet manifold and then just plonked it on complete. Seems a much easier way to do it to me.
As an ex-VAG technician, you made that look easy - you could probably do it with your eyes closed and one hand tied behind your back! 😀
Personally when i tighten head bolts and in this case i tighten all 10 of them in sequence to 10nm, then 20nm, then 30nm and finally 40nm. Good video dean.

I don't know what the build manual says, but when in aviation we had to torque down two mating surfaces with a gasket between them after the first torque down procedure we would wait a few minutes then go through the torque down procedure again and you'd be surprised how much movement was on those bolts until the torque setting was achieved he setting was achived
@1066gaz

@@wynhughes9072interesting. Most likely because the gasket is squashing in bit by bit after each torque down. On the final torque down i always click the wrench anyways quite a few times afterwards just to be sure. Some people do the click once only, which annoys me haha.
Brilliant summary at the start👍. Engine didn't get oil, stopped working 😂

Superrrrrrb looking good great content
Great video but feel as though I have missed loads of thus car series. I will ask therefore, have you checked the condition of the bottom end? Given it was oil starved, has it nit trashed the mains and big ends too?
Great vid loved it😊
Another great video Dean, will the golf be for sale once finished ?
Great vid mate, new subscriber here, on the next one, double, triple check clearances and timings....I started with the TVR as I recently rebuilt a 350i with rover V8, and am interested what TVR's evolution looks like, check out Ed China as I'm pretty sure he has documented all the pit falls to get one of the Cerberas back on the road.
Lovely Jubbly, easy when you know how Dean.
My pal has a “as new” 150 miles on it Borg Warner turbo in its box if you are ever in need 👍. As a wise man once said “smashing grommet”.
Brilliant 👍have subscribed.
Finally a Mk5 golf day ⏰🥳

What about the bottom end ?
@Max34557
Жыл бұрын
Indeed, didn’t even replace the piston rings which are known to be a weak point on these engines and lead to oil consumption
Great videos 👍 what gloves do you find the best?
Love your TL;DR get up to speed :D - I did watch the previous videos but other KZreadrs need to take note from you on the "bring up to speed" intros. I have seen/read that the VAG FSI injector filter baskets do disintegrate ( probably high ethanol in modern fuels?) - there are suppliers out there that do replacement metal baskets rather than plastic. Without wanting to promote; search for FUEL INJECTOR FILTERS 6MM X 10MM ALL-METAL
TVR TVR 😉, thx for new video!
I used to know a Len Beck who was an engine rebuilder in Newport, Bob Beck may be a relative of his.
With oil starvation aren't you worried about the condition of the crank and the rods?
Head looks good but worried that no oil whatsoever poured over cams etc?or assembly oil? And as mentioned by another poster, could have pre filled turbo feed as well...would be a shame to wreck head/turbo again for lack of oil..also prefer the mk4 golf...got a 130 tdi estate with 207,000 on clock, owned it since it had 97,000...ideal for my random tours through western Europe, done 4 in it so far, each one averaged about 3,000 miles, and 53mpg ..... Really don't envy you doing the Tvr...convinced it would be better replacing entire chassis as opposed to piecemeal repairs. Good luck and looking forward to next update :)
@SavingSalvage

The head has lubricant all over the cams etc and I’ll put oil into the turbo feed just before I connect the oil feed pipe 👍🏽
I wish you said the prices of stuff, would be really interesting to know.
Beautifullllllllll video..!
brilliant
Sorry if I missed it but what clogged the oil pickup in the first place? Reason I ask, is I had similar damage happened to my Audi A4 1.8L and I could never get a straight response to the oil starvation from my perfectly maintained car.
Should have used R-Tech for injector servicing. They do TFSI injector all day every day.
What company do you use to have the cylinder head reconditioned?
Why did the oil pick up get clogged up? I had this happen with a diesel where the injector seals started to fail and blow by got carbon in the oil.
Good job mate, remember to prime the turbo with oil👍

@@SavingSalvage check the condition of your rod and crank bearings. Chances are they’re as bad as the head was (hopefully not though).
Steering Rack?! Have you forgotten that it potentially needs one, while you have improved access?
Did the gasket need a bit of gasket sealer as well ???
Did you replace the cam chain tensioner while everything was apart
Can you try to do more videos on the mk5 gti please
Any bottom end damage?, be very surprised if crank hasn't also eaten itself?
Did you oil the bores mate?
given that it is clear it's been starved of oil shouldn't you check the crank and the crank bearings?

ironically as the head was starved of oil, I bet all the oil would have been in the sump 🙂

Sound advice. Plus, if the cams themselves were ok from the original engine it follows that the crank material stands a good chance of being unaffected too. Hopefully its ok or just wants some more std size crank and rod bearings. Might be possible to sort this with the engine still in too.
any idea why the oil pickup blocked? Lack of oil and filter changes?
What do you use in your phone mate for the torque settings and sequencing?
I have a mk2 2.0l tsfi seat leon. Power and Boost has just gone. What could be the problem? How much to fix?
Did you do the 90 degree turn on the head bolts ?

Be careful with that roller. They are known to strip.
Hey mate, just some feedback on your formatting. There's heaps of time between episodes which is fine, you're a busy guy. But there's nothing more frustrating than watching a video like this where you make heaps of progress only to have to wait for an undetermined amount of time to see the result. I'd personally rather watch a 25-30min video where you did all this shit, get it running and sort any diagnostics and just ticked the engine build off. The time between videos and the very fragmented nature of jumping from car to car makes it hard to follow.
Evening
Today, it's much easier just to buy a used engine from a automotive scrap yard, after all a person still gets the quality control of the original car manufacturer as opposed to a rebuilt engine.
@SavingSalvage

Who’s to say the engine from a scrap yard will last 10 minutes?
