The rebel really sharpens up without ridiculous chimney attached to it.

Got my Thunder in and installed it! You aren’t kidding it’s a tight fit but it sounds great! I only wish Coffman’s included a black bolt for the exhaust hanger. I’ll go out and spend 2 bucks on a black bolt and washer. But it sounds great. The downshift rumble sounds awesome too!

I haven't been out riding since my nasty accident back in October ( kzread.info/dash/bejne/pK15rq-tdcjSaMo.html ). However, I'm dying to get back out on two wheels. I have a brand new Coffman's Thunder in the box just waiting to be installed on the Rebel 1100. I'm hoping to have time to drag my Rebel out of the warehouse and later this week. THANKS for The Great Rebel Installation . From LifeOfLoz .

I drilled new holes on the mounting plate of two of the larger Honda bags and lifted them both up 1 7/8 inches. Still look good and the one above the stock muffler is well above it. No heat problems so far. Bag stays ambient temperature.

Thanks for the tip, Michael! I hadn't considered that option, but it's a great idea! I have the Saddlemen Sport Tunnel Bag ( amzn.to/2WwmHTE ) for my back rack/seat, and I noticed that the bag's side pockets sit too low and interfere with the hard plastic backers on the panniers. I'll need to raise up the base of the tail bag slightly, so that means raising the bags would present even more of a problem. I'll stick with the Coffman's Shorty (classic) so I have plenty of clearance for luggage on the back of the Rebel. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

@@hodkling Yes, here’s what I did. First I removed the inner liner which is held by Velcro around the zippers. Next, there is another flap which covers the inside back of the bag. This is velcroed at the top and appears to be stitched at the bottom. Disconnect the Velcro and push the flap down to the bottom of the bag to gain access to the philips screw heads. Remove all screws and nuts. The back mount which attaches to the bike should now be free. Next carefully line up this mount plate down a couple inches on the bag. I went down 1 7/8s inches. This will lift up the bag when put back in the bike. I marked the two top holes, drilled them out, put the mount back on the bag and then test fitted it on the bike. I liked how this looked so I drilled out the rest of the holes and put the bag back together. Repeat this for the next bag making sure to put the mount down by the same amount so the bags look even when mounted on the bike. I covered the old holes with these Black Chicago Screw Slotted Post... www.amazon.com/dp/B08L5MDQL9?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share All in all, I’m very happy with this modification. The bag on the muffler side doesn’t get hot at all, even when loaded up and weighted (sagging?) down. It definitely can’t touch the muffler now.

I really wasn’t interested in investing in a large amount of money in other bags. This will be great with the Thunder exhaust.

@@QuasiMotard It’s not really new I just have not been doing as many helmet less Moto vlogs this year. It’s a cheap mono mic and you have to use a mono to stereo adapter and it’s just cabled into a GoPro five with a mic adapter. Of course on a street glide I do have a fairing and I’m running a klockwork 6.5 windshield which I think helps keep the wind out of my face

Thanks for the feedback! The clearance between the exhaust and the swingarm is nearly identical to the factory unit... no interference at all. This Coffman's Thunder was a previous version that still had a slight upswept design. The newer models are straight-back, so there is more clearance for a large pannier on the right side. Does the bike need to be re-tuned after fitting this pipe? Doesn't enabling the engine to breathe easier also weaken the fuel mixture? Does it need Dyno-tuning for instance? And does a non-standard pipe invalidate the warranty? Many thanks for a great video.

Thanks for the feedback! Slip-on exhausts like the Coffman's Shorty don't remove the catalytic converter, so there isn't a drastic change in backpressure or airflow through the engine that could cause an overly-lean condition. I'm sure that a proper dyno tune wtih a wideband O2 sensor could probably richen up the mixture and extract a few more HP. I'm still waiting for DynoJet or other aftermarket companies to release a flash tuner for the Rebel 1100. The engine is based on the Africa Twin 1100, which has several tuning options already... shouldn't be too hard to adapt to the Rebel. As far as I'm aware, it doesn't affect the manufacturer's warranty (at least in the USA), and it won't adversely affect the engine's longevity. On the plus side, there is a considerable weight loss (about 10 pounds)... and that awesome sound! 😉👍 --QM

Did you ever find a rear stand that you liked for this combo? I have a Thunder exhaust arriving tomorrow. In addition to improving the looks of the bike, I hope it will mean I don't have to buy the expensive Pit Bull stand because it's the only one that works with the stock exhaust. I'm hoping that now I can use something from Harbor Freight or another one in a similar price range. I mostly just need it for chain maintenance.

I ended up buying the Pitbull stand for my Rebel 1100. I've heard decent reports about the Harbor Freight stands after the tubes are bent apart a few centimeters... and the lift plates need to be padded with rubber. @OnTheRebel11 uses the Harbor Freight stands with his bike and he seems to like them. That's a good question! I haven't noticed any significant difference up or down in efficiency. I would assume that the efficiency would improve slightly with the weight and back-pressure reductions, but my Rebel was still fresh and breaking-in the motor when I swapped the exhaust. MPG numbers usually aren't great during break-in, so I didn't have a good baseline for that comparison. The fuel economy on the Rebel 1100 is difficult to gauge accurately unless I'm running steady-state and rolling at sedate speeds on the highway (e.g., under 70 MPH). It's very hard NOT to play with the 1100's torque in city traffic. The new Coffman's exhaust makes that even harder... love to hear that growl... so twisting the wrist obviously affects economy. I track my fuel stats on Fuelly: fuelly.com/driver/QuasiMotard . You can browse through all of the bikes' stats there if you're interested. My lifetime average for the Rebel 1100 is 45.6 MPG, with a high of 58.3 MPG (steady highway at 65 MPH) and a low of 35.6 MPG (terrorizing stop-and-go city traffic). Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

You can request a nameplate delete when you place your order. Just put in the notes that you don't want the logo, and Coffman's will send you a muffler without the logo on the side. 😉👍 --QM

Unfortunately, that puts me back to not being able to decide between this and the low mount version of the Two Brothers Racing exhaust. Decisions, decisions!

If you email Coffman and ask to ship without the faceplate installed they will do it without an issue. Simply email them and and make a note in your order before checkout and they’ll ship it separate. Got mine like this and love it.

i like the prototype a lot more.. thats way too close to the bag.. my ninja exhause is close to the bag and it melted the inner lining, how did it work out for u now?

The Coffman's Shorty is perfect for my needs. I reverted back to the Shorty after this demo video, and the Thunder was given to a new Rebel 1100 owner during my @LifeOfBurch meet-up ride back in October 2021. The Shorty gives plenty of clearance and sounds great without being obnoxiously loud. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

Does the exhaust need to be all the way to the stop ring? I have such a small gap that I can't get the exhaust to move any further. Can I use some type of lube to get the extra inch? If I can do you know of what type I can use? My gasket was still on when I pulled the stock exhaust off on my rebel 1100 dct. I had to get a flathead to peel away the soft metal and mesh gasket. Got all of it off but I'm still left with a small gap before I get to the "stop" ring on the pipe. It's less than an inch before the ring. Could I just leave it like that? Sorry for all the questions.

You'll need it as far toward the stop ring as possible so the upper hanger bracket lines up for the bolt. If you can get the hangar bolt in, then you're good to go. If you can't get it down far enough, then you could try unbolting the mid-support near the catalytic converter to give more room to twist and wiggle the exhaust. I wouldn't recommend any lubricant other than WD-40 or something that will burn off (and stink) after the exhaust heats up. Off topic, but I finally took my Cub out for a run. Only went from Lowell, AR to the border in Oklahoma, but HOW on earth did you do a cannonball run with a Super Cub?! My ass was sore after 40 minutes of driving and nearly numb. I could barely make two hours of driving let alone the dozens you did, lol. Not only that, but I could only get her to 49mph on even road with her stock gearing. :\

Congrats on your first Cub roadtrip! Here are the two most important words in my Cub touring vocabulary: Air Hawk! 🤣 The Cub's seat is not very comfortable so I added the AirHawk Cruiser R Large seat cushion ( amzn.to/3gz8pJ4 ) before I started my 9600+ mile trip around the country. The Cub's seating position can also get very tiring over long days in the saddle, but the fuel stops every ~90 miles let me stretch my legs a bit. As for top speeds, I noticed that my Cub loosened-up a bit after 1000 miles and 60-65 MPH was easier to attain. My 15T (+1) front sprocket helped me maintian 55-60 MPH cruising speeds easier than Adrian's 14T sprocket; however, that taller gearing hurt me on some of the long, slow inclines because the engine RPM was out of the peak power range. Of course, these speeds depend upon your road conditions (e.g., inclines, headwinds, etc) and your riding weight. My normal riding weight is 170 lbs with all of my gear, and then I'll usually strap another 25-30 lbs of camping gear onto the back rack. We were also pulling 80+ pounds of trailer and gear behind our Cubs on that trip, so our speeds were 5-8 MPH below our normal cruising speed, and nearly 10 MPH below our normal top speed of 70-71 MPH. A windscreen can also improve top speed and efficiency as long as it isn't a huge barn door. I think my little Asahi Short Visor screen improves my bike's aerodynamics a bit... it just breaks up my silhouette in the wind, but leaves my shoulders and helmet in the clear. Adrian's Puig T.X. screen is too tall, and it was hurting his top speed and also caused more drag when fighting strong headwinds. I'm just beginning to edit my SCBR trip videos. You will see a LOT of slow, painful hill climbs and ducking below the windscreen to gain 5 MPH in that series. Our Cubs were able to maintain 52-55 MPH while pulling our trailers on flat ground without significant headwinds. When we started uphill or against the wind, then our speeds quickly dropped to 35-45 MPH or lower... sometimes down to 25-32 MPH up long inclines in the mountains. The little Cub will take you anywhere, but you won't get anywhere very quickly! 😉👍 --QM

Yes, I took a 3K mile trip up to Annapolis, Maryland to meet @LifeOfBurch for his first annual meet-up. The Rebel did well on that trip, but I did experience a fair amount of hip fatigue from fighting 80+ MPH winds on my legs for 10+ hours/day. Can you still use passenger foot pegs with the thunder exhaust ?? They would share the bracket.

Yes! The Coffman's Thunder will attach to the existing footpeg bracket. I had to use the original spacer bushing/tube from the OEM exhaust to allow the right footpeg to mount properly. The Coffman's Thunder comes with a stainless bolt and nut, but it's fully-threaded... the OEM footpeg only has threads toward the end, so you'll need a spacer. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

No, re-tuning the bike isn't required because the catalytic converter is still present in the mid-pipe. The general rule is that if you only change the exhaust OR the intake (but not both), and the catalytic converter is still retained, then the engine won't run too lean. The factory ECU can adjust +/- 10% to compensate for altitude and humidity. That's enough to compensate for minor variations in the engine's airflow from either an exhaust OR intake upgrade, but usually not both. This 1100 could probably gain several HP through a combination of intake, exhaust, and ECU tuning because the Africa Twin 1100 (same engine) makes nearly 15 HP more than the Rebel. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

The decision for me really came down to the ability to use saddlebags or not. I plan to tour with my Rebel, so saddlebags were a must-have. The TBR and the Vance & Hines are upswept too far and the length interferes with the right saddlebag. The new Coffman's Thunder won't interfere with the smaller (10L) bag, and the larger (14L) bag might still work with some modifications to the bag's mounting bracket (to raise the bag about 1-2"). The Coffman's Shorty (classic) definitely clears the bags and sounds the best, IMHO. Good luck with your shopping decision, and congrats on your Rebel 1100! Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

Do you need to retune the engine for slip-on?

Tuning or re-flashing the ECU isn't absolutely necessary, but it's not a bad idea. These slip-on exhausts don't drastically alter the airflow of the engine, which could cause it to run lean (hot). The catalytic converter on the Rebel 1100 is contained within the header pipes upstream of the muffler, so there's still enough back pressure to maintain a healthy A/F ratio. If you also upgraded the intake along with the exhaust, then a re-flash and a proper dyno tune would be highly recommended. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

I haven't had any issues with my bike in 12K+ miles. The catalytic converter isn't deleted with this upgrade, so the engine's airflow isn't drastically affected. The OEM computer can adjust fuel trim by 10% to compensate for altitude or fuel conditions, so this falls within the adjustment range. However, if you upgrade both the intake and exhaust, then the OEM fuel maps might not have enough room to adjust and result in a lean condition. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

That windscreen is the Daytona Aero Visor ( kzread.info/dash/bejne/kYpn1amCg62wedo.html ). It does help to break up the wind pressure on my chest a bit, but it isn't a suitable touring screen. I'm still shopping for a larger windscreen that doesn't ruin the naked bike aesthetics. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

I've been looking to get luggage on my rebel 1100 and I specifically remember reading that the OEM 500 equipment doesn't fit the 1100. Not sure the context as to why, but that's my 2 cents. Been a pain in the ass trying to find nice bags for my 1100 that aren't sold out or a thousand bucks for a pair.

Howdy, Mike! I'll have to defer to others in the group for that answer because I haven't seen the OEM luggage for the Rebel 500's. I can tell you that the Honda saddlebag mounts for the Rebel 1100 are actually made by SW-Motech, and they use the SLC mounting pattern (3 quick-release bobbins in a triangular pattern). Any of the SW-Motech SLC bags or adapter plates will fit onto these mounts as long as you leave clearance on the right side for the exhaust. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

Yes! You can request the nameplate delete when you make an order from Coffman's. They can ship a special-order item that doesn't have the Coffman's logo plate on it. It does help to break up the wind pressure on my chest a bit, but it isn't a suitable touring screen. I recently upgraded to the Daytona Blast Barrier ( japan.webike.net/products/24739061.html ). You can see that screen in some of my later Rebel 1100 videos and vlogs. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to make an installation video about it before my Annapolis, MD roadtrip. It does a better job of breaking up wind pressure on my torso, but it's still not quite tal enough for long highway duties. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

Yes, both the Shorty and the Thunder have the DB killers installed. I haven't removed the core before, but I think the core is the noise baffle. Without the core installed, these pipes would be straight through (e.g., no spark arrestor and nothing to retain the high-temp fiberglass batting)... they would be LOUD! 😉👍 --QM

The Coffman's Thunder is considerably quieter than an open pipe. I took some sound pressure measurements while recording the Coffman's Shorty installation ( kzread.info/dash/bejne/qqWquKOYiaW_fKg.html ), but my camera corrupted that video footage. The open pipe SPL was 94 dBA at idle, 116 dBA at 4K RPM, and an ear-splitting 134 dBA at redline. So, the Thunder reduces SPL about 8 dBA at idle and as much as 25 dBA at high RPM. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

Not trying to rain on anyone’s parade . Those pops after you’ve changed an exhaust system are actually backfires on deceleration That’s telling you that you need an electronic tuner to adjust the proper air/fuel mixture . You’ve not just changed the sound . You’ve changed the performance of the engine . The engine is running too lean or too rich . You need the proper air/ fuel mixture so that you’re engine runs properly . That’s what they do to Harleys when they put a stage 1 & 2 kit on . One shouldn’t be done without the other I would think ? You obviously thought Harley owners are just making their motorcycles loud . lol No they are making more horsepower too . At least when it’s done correctly. They change the stock air filter as well to get more CFM’s because the stock air filters are too restricted . They add a tuner to balance the air / fuel mixture and change the exhaust . Wonder if changing you’re muffler like that effects the warranty of you’re motorcycle ?

My Rebel doesn't have any abnormal decel pops. Those are throttle blips from the DCT computer automatically rev-matching on the downshifts. All of the DCT models do that if you manually downshift or if you slow down rapidly after hard acceleration. It just sounds better with the Coffman's than it did with the Honda exhaust. 👍 --QM
