I knew it since the beginning. They probably didnt say it to save the movie feom Ilsa's fans anger: if they think Ilsa is not dead they wont consider her death the huge flaw of the movie it is. In Rogue Nation she stole the show, Fallout made clear Cruise wanted the show back and wasnt really willing to give her the space she deserved. This is a betrayal to the fans but I can understand her decision: she's a world class woman and a good actress, she cant waste years of her career for 15 minutes screentime in a not even so good blockbuster: last movie was kinda average, not something worth the price.

I was actually kind of relieved when her character died. She was a great addition when she first appeared in Rogue Nation. She seemed like a female version of Ethan, his equal and perhaps even the soulmate he was looking for. As the films progressed it seemed like they had her repeating herself. Once they revealed during press for Dead Reckoning that Elsa and Ethan didn't have a romantic relationship, I knew there was nowhere else they could go with her. Her character really hasn't evolved. She doesn't even feel like she's part of the team. It seems like they just run into her every once in awhile and then she joins up with them. That's a little bit stifling as an actor. I feel the same way about Simon Pegg. I love the guy, but Benji should have been killed off a while ago as well. There was perfect scene in Dead Reckoning to do so. He was just a stand in for Luther when they couldn't agree on Ving Rhames' salary in Ghost Protocol. They both basically do the same job. The franchise really took a turn for the best with the third film leading into the fourth where it started to feel like a team of individuals working together. Not the Tom Cruise show. From Fallout on, they're starting to focus on just Ethan Hunt again. So I can understand why Rebecca wanted out. Haley Atwell is a great addition, I hope they properly use her character. I never thought someone could have better chemistry with Cruise than Rebecca, until Haley arrived.

  • @marcobeltrami4093

Atwell is average tho. Spy movies need charming women and she's far from being one. Lame replacement: i felt her to be out of place the whole movie, she does not look athletic, not hot, not charming, not mysterious, not intelligent, not charismatic. She's not a good reason to watch the movie, just a casual woman being there because nowadays movies need some female character to meet diversity requirements. Every five minutes i was like "What is she doing there? Why is she still alive?", to the point her presence became annoying.

On the character i would say she didnt evolve just because McQ chose to not evolve her, and he chose that because Ferguson chose to leave. Pretty clear. Still Ferguson choice is well motivated: Cruise ego to blame again.

I think they killed her for four reasons: 1) Ilsa is easily the most important character in MI saga alongside Ethan: they could not just make her disappear, people would have been like: wtf happened to her? 2) The movie cost was 290 milions, letting her totally out of the movie could have prevented some fans from going to the theatre: Cruise is the main attraction but a lot of people got interested in the saga when Ilsa showed up, that's a fact. They needed every penny and couldnt take the risk. 3) They needed to make two movies out of a simple story, so they needed to keep it long: Ilsa's death was the perfect occasion to build a 40 minutes long scene just to kill her. 4) They someway thought her death would be emotionally impactful to the audience, but carried it out in such a dumb way it actually wasnt that much. Same mistake they made with Hunley in Fallout and number one reason for me to never watch MI movies ever again: too much ego from Cruise, no respect for secondary characters who are far more interesting than his one.
